Revised start times - #raisethebat Third Test Match – England v Pakistan – 21-25 August 2020

Following positive discussions with the England & Wales Cricket Board, (ECB) the International Cricket Council (ICC), led by Match Referee Chris Broad and various stakeholders including broadcast partners, the ECB and the ICC have agreed to revised start times ahead of the #raisethebat third Test starting on Friday at the Ageas Bowl.

The flexible approach will enable the prospect of making up time for inclement weather during the morning session of subsequent days rather than at the end of the day.

The match officials will ensure that light is monitored to maximise playing time while it is still safe to do so. The safety of the players is still the number one priority for this protocol.

The revised start times have been agreed with the captains and coaches of both England and Pakistan and will be implemented for the final match of this series.

Further consideration will be given to applying these changes further at future series played in England.

Revised Playing Times Due to Bad Weather

- After the conclusion of play on day one, the ICC Match Referee, Groundstaff and the ECB Match Manager will meet to discuss the start times for the next day.

- If the forecast looks good in the morning, it will be an option to commence play at 10.30am and that final decision will be made by the ICC Match Referee, Chris Broad.

- The Match Referee will confirm the revised playing times, with the most likely scenario of amending to:

10.30am start with 98 overs to be bowled in the day
6.00pm scheduled close of play
6.30pm extra 30 mins to bowl overs
7.00pm cut off for extra time for bad weather during the day

- The morning session would last two and a half hours if the start time was adjusted.

The match officials will ensure that light is monitored to maximise playing time while it is still safe to do so. The safety of the players is still the number one priority for this protocol.

ECB need the third umpire to fully officiate the game. Kettleborough has been exposed to be highly incompetent

What really gets me is that ECB/ICC making this look like some sort of Noble Prize winning decision but fact is that its the most sensible decision anyone could have made.

Also why start 10:30? why not start 7:30am? after all they are all living at the ground!

Not sure all the viewers wake up at 6am :yk

all this drama for just 30 more min. why not even 10 AM, i'm sure no one will die if they had a longer first session on some days (not all) with 2 drinks breaks. maybe they could eat a banana or nutrition bar, or call lunch a bit earlier and divide up the longer session time in all 3 sessions...

hopefully we can get close to 300 overs over the 5 days, otherwise it will end up as another wasted draw.

Viewership revenue is coming more so from outside England than it is from domestic audiences, so don't think that is the reason.

I think broadcasters need some guidelines, they can't just willy nilly move around schedules 4-5 hours. They have other commitments that need to be respected

Yeah guess it's coming from Ireland

The local broadcast deal is worth substantially more than the foreign broadcasting deal.

Step in the right direction.

They should be able to play 90 overs from 10AM - 6PM every day in England, easily.

10AM-12:30PM: Morning Session (actually going back to being in the morning again)
12:30-13:10PM: Lunch
13:10-15:40PM: Afternoon Session
15:40-16:00PM: Tea
16:00-18:00PM: Evening Session

Nasser hussain has been saying this for the last week as have the other pundits
It's upto Graham thorpe and younis khan to make sure the batsmen are prepared

MICHAEL ATHERTON on SkySports, meanwhile, says common sense has prevailed...

"Common sense is not always commonly applied in cricket but, in this instance, it definitely is. There's nothing to stop anybody starting half an hour in advance. It's an entirely logical and sensible move."

Good interview with match referee explaining the ins and outs of this.

This is a great decision by every side concerned. Well done to ECB, PCB, ICC, and broadcasters to agree to this quickly.

May come into play if this rain interruption is longer than expected.
