Ed Joyce retires from all forms of cricket with immediate effect [Update Post #89]

Players are no longer allowed to play for two different test playing nations. Joyce was allowed to play for England due to the nature of his citizenship and conversely he was allowed to represent Ireland as well because of it's associate status.

For example, Ryan Ten Doeschate was born in South Africa but plays for the Netherlands due to his parent(s) holding citizenship there. While he would technically be eligible to play for SA, he is currently pursuing a spot in the the English side through KOLPAK. Once eligible, he would be able to play for England OR South Africa as well as still being eligible to play for the Netherlands.

Really? Not another one!! I'm starting to think there is actually a profound and unifying reason why they all do this, one that goes beyond the obvious :D

Don't worry this is nothing new. Most of the England team in 92 were not born in England.

Sorry,my bad,i didn't know that Arafat played for a county team /against county teams for Scotland. I read somewhere that he played for Scotland as an international team before making his int debut for pak & remember seeing him in Scotland colourr. Maybe i'm mistaken, but there are other pakistanis playing for Scotland i think.

Rahul Dravid has also played for Scotland...or Ireland, it was one of the two.

as for Joyce, I thought you could only get promoted, not demoted...

somebody needs to give us an answer! :wajid

I didn't feel much sympathy for Joyce earlier and thought he just jumped ship. However, seeing the direction the ICC is going in...I no longer blame him or Morgan. These guys love the game and should be allowed to pursue a team that is privileged to play in the World Cup.

After AB de Villiers, Ed Joyce retires from cricket with immediate effect

Yesterday, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers stunned the cricketing fraternity by announcing his retirement from international cricket. Ireland opener Ed Joyce has followed suit. While de Villiers will continue to play franchise cricket, Joyce has announced complete retirement from the sport. Sharing the news, Joyce stated that playing in Ireland's inaugural Test, versus Pakistan, was the perfect last game before calling it a day. He will take up a new role; overseeing leadership development and as a batting coach in the Irish performance system.

Joyce stated, "I feel now is the right time to stop playing and get started on a new chapter. The recent Test match against Pakistan was such an incredible few days and was the perfect game for me to say was my last in professional cricket. I am very grateful to Cricket Ireland for giving me the opportunity to get involved in the coaching set-up. I know I have a huge amount to learn about the art of coaching, but I know I also have a huge amount of knowledge that I'm determined to pass on to the next generation of Irish talent,"added the former Irish opener.

Did You Know?

Joyce is one of the ten cricketers who have represented two countries in ODIs and also the first to play T20Is for two nations. Joyce ends a glittering career as Ireland's fifth-highest run-getter in ODIs (2,151 runs from 61 games at 41.36).

Joyce also represented England in 17 ODIs from a period of 2006 to 2007; amassing a mediocre 471 runs at 27.70 before returning to Ireland. He also represented England in two T20Is - against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively.

Joyce has enjoyed enormous success in English County. He has been a prolific run-scorer in First-Class cricket ending with 18,461 runs (255 matches) at 47.95, including 47 centuries. The clubs he has represented are: Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Middlesex and Sussex in the County.

Fair play to him. He was a big part of getting Ireland to the place where they could credibly receive Test status. He then earned a perfect swansong by representing Ireland in their debut Test match.

Poor decision.

He was needed as a test player for Ireland for at-least 4 years if Ireland were getting 4-8 tests per year

What a legend. I'd have given anything for him to have made his 50 last week. Alas he waited 20 years for a Test to get a crap lbw call and be run out by brilliant fielding. Still, thrilled he got his cap. Farewell to who I view as our greatest ever player. Delighted he's getting involved in the coaching. In a day and age of franchise millionaires, lovely to see a guy leave his county contract a year early and return to Ireland taking a pay cut to do so to give back to his country.

Will play a key role coaching the youngsters.

Wrong. He has been totally crocked for 12 months now. Has been rested and barely played most of our matches for a while and his ODI form had started to slip when he did play. He himself said if not for the Test he'd have retired last year and his knee was giving him constant pain. Went for as long as he could've, when your body quits theres nothing you can do.

And we're not getting 4´8 tests a year lol, more likely 2-4.
