Two of the world's most high-profile technology billionaires - Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg - have agreed to fight each other in a cage match.

Mr Musk posted a message on his social media platform Twitter that he was "up for a cage fight" with Mr Zuckerberg.

Mr Zuckerberg, the boss of Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, then posted a screenshot of Mr Musk's tweet with the caption "send me location".

"The story speaks for itself," a Meta spokesperson told the BBC.

Mr Musk then replied to Mr Zuckerberg's response with: "Vegas Octagon."

The Octagon is the competition mat and fenced-in area used for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bouts. The UFC is based in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mr Musk, who turns 52 later this month, also tweeted: "I have this great move that I call "The Walrus", where I just lie on top of my opponent & do nothing."

He also tweeted: "I almost never work out, except for picking up my kids & throwing them in the air."

Meanwhile, 39-year-old Mr Zuckerberg has already been training in mixed martial arts (MMA) and has recently won jiu-jitsu tournaments.

Twitter did not provide a statement when contacted by the BBC for comment.

The exchanges have gone viral with social media users debating who would win the bout, while others have posted memes including mocked up posters advertising the fight.

Earlier this month, Meta showed staff plans for a text-based social network designed to compete with Twitter, sources have told the BBC.

It could allow users to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta's image-sharing app.

It could potentially allow the company to bring over followers from decentralised platforms such as Mastodon.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that the platform was in development.

The text-based network - which has a working title of P92 - could turn out to be a greater rival to Elon Musk's Twitter than either BlueSky or Mastodon.

Who will win this fight?

Added a poll :D

Heart says Musk, mind says Zuckerberg. Don't think it will happen though

Zuckerberg's actually a trained jiu jitsu practitioner, can imagine that's the only reason he's so eager to fight.

I very rarely follow main news and any social media stuff but Whats happening honestly? first youtubers boxing, then youtubers fighting pro boxers etc. and now this,

People have nothing better than to just see fighting I guess?

Musk says fight with Zuckerberg will be live-streamed on X

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Elon Musk said in a social media post that his proposed cage fight with Meta (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg would be live-streamed on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The social media moguls have been egging each other into a mixed martial arts cage match in Las Vegas since June.

"Zuck v Musk fight will be live-streamed on X. All proceeds will go to charity for veterans," Musk said in a post on X early on Sunday morning, without giving any further details.

Earlier on Sunday, Musk had said on X that he was "lifting weights throughout the day, preparing for the fight", adding that he did not have time to work out so brings the weights to work.

When a user on X asked Musk the point of the fight, Musk responded by saying "It's a civilized form of war. Men love war".

Meta did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on Musk's post.

The brouhaha began when Musk said in a June 20 post that he was "up for a cage match" with Zuckerberg, who is trained in jiujitsu.

A day later, Zuckerberg, 39, who has posted pictures of matches he has won on his company's Instagram platform, asked Musk, 51, to "send location" for the proposed throwdown, to which Musk replied "Vegas Octagon", referring to an events centre where mixed martial arts (MMA) championship bouts are held.

Musk then said he would start training if the cage fight took shape.

P much. Does Elon even have any formal training? Mark has even won BJJ tournaments. Seems like a huge mismatch if Elon is untrained.

Elon should win if an actual fight takes place. But, it is unlikely to happen. Just a PR stunt.

Yeah, imagine for their investors the prospect of seeing key decision making CEOs engage in a physical cage match would likely raise red flags for them which can cause their stocks to go down.

Investors rely on the stability and strategic vision of the company's leadership, particularly its CEO, when making investment decisions. Seeing the CEOs risking their physical well-being in such a manner will lead to uncertainty, who's going to make decisions when one of them gets beaten to a pulp or gets serious damage ?

But if it does happen, I'm team X and would hope next fight be Bezos vs Branson !

First of all, it's not happening, and even if it did happen Mark would beat Elon so badly that it would start looking nasty.

One guy trains MMA the other guy posts memes on Twitter.

Elon just has to land one solid punch and that Ostrich head nerd will fall flat.

Mark Zuckerberg is hellbent on taking a fight in the UFC -- NOT with Elon Musk, but possibly with an actual UFC fighter -- and now, Dana White is more than insinuating it could actually go down!

As you know, Zuck's moved on from a fight with Elon, saying last Friday, " ... I'll share details on my next fight when I'm ready." So, he's got some plan for his "next fight."

He went on to say, "I want to do it in a way that puts a spotlight on the elite athletes at the top of their game," adding, "You do that by working with professional orgs like the UFC or ONE to pull this off well."

Musk is known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial statements on social media, while Zuckerberg tends to maintain a lower public profile. But this time Mark is coming out of his shell. :)

No fan of Zuckerberg at all, he complied with the FBI to keep information out of the public eye . Musk is a far more genuine person and by far more intelligent, the man is a near genius.

Zucker trains more but Musk is a bigger person with a background in Judo.

Its not something I'd be excited to watch but would watch it.

I dont think it will happen, just helps them promote themselves more.

Mark Zuckerberg has torn one of his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) while training for a fight.

The mixed martial arts (MMA) enthusiast posted a picture on Instagram showing him in a hospital bed with his left leg elevated and heavily bandaged.

The ACL is one of the ligaments inside the knee and "gives the knee joint stability", according to the NHS.

"Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it," the Facebook co-founder, 39, said.

"I was training for a competitive MMA fight early next year, but now that's delayed a bit.

"Grateful for the doctors and team taking care of me."

Zuckerberg said he was "still looking forward" to his MMA fight "after I recover", adding: "Thanks to everyone for the love and support."

In May, he completed his first jiujitsu tournament.

A few weeks ago, he shared a close-up of his face showing bruising on the bridge of his nose and under his eyes.

It was down to sparring that got "a little out of hand", he said.

In August, Zuckerberg accused Elon Musk of not being serious about the pair having a cage fight, and said it is time to "move on" from the saga.

The chief executive of Meta Platforms said his tech billionaire counterpart did not appear to want to go through with the highly-anticipated clash after failing to even agree on a date.

There were months of back-and-forth between the pair after Musk suggested the idea - only for Zuckerberg to unexpectedly respond that he was prepared to battle his rival.

But the Tesla chief executive said he may have needed surgery before the fight could happen.

Stephen Fry: Musk and Zuckerberg have 'polluted culture'

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk are "the worst polluters in human history", Stephen Fry has said.

The actor and comedian made the claim during a lecture at Kings College, London.

"You and your children cannot breathe the air or swim in the waters of our culture without breathing in the toxic particulates and stinking effluvia that belch and pour unchecked from their companies into the currents of our world," he said of the pair.

The BBC has approached the two men's companies for comment.

Mr Fry has a track record of being an early adopter of technology - and was once a regular poster on X, when it was known as Twitter.

He stopped posting in 2022, a few months after the platform was purchased by Mr Musk, but has retained his account. He is no longer active on any social networks.

"I’m the chump who thought social media could change the world," he told his audience at the Digital Futures Institute.

He said he was at first enthusiastic about the potential of social media to unite people around the world and bring about positive change in society, citing the Arab Spring protests which were coordinated online as an example – but added that he had been proved wrong.

He described what he considered to be a fatal flaw in attempts by early Facebook algorithms to “maximise engagement”, saying nobody had predicted that engagement would be “most maximised by... the worst passions" such as anger, shock and horror.

“We are decidedly hopeless at knowing where technology will take us or what it will do to us,” he said.

He returned to the theme several times throughout his one hour speech, in which he also considered the future of artificial intelligence.

Mr Fry argued that AI was “poised to disrupt every space we have”.

He said he hoped corporate greed would not corrupt the development of AI tech at the expense of safety.

“The best I can do is this – Einstein and Russell said in their manifesto on nuclear weapons – we appeal as human beings to human beings, remember your humanity and forget the rest,” he said.

Mr Fry's broadside was not the only attack on Mr Musk.

Earlier on Thursday, senior Meta executive Sir Nick Clegg, talking at Chatham House, in London, had been similarly scathing of Mr Musk’s platform X.

The former deputy prime minister called it “a tiny, elite, news-obsessed, politics-obsessed app” and added that in his view the social network had become “a one-man hyper-partisan hobby horse."

In March 2024 X claimed to have 550 million monthly visitors. Facebook has just over 3bn.
