A small comment in the PCB release regarding the T20I squad:

Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik were not considered as part of the selectors’ forward-looking strategy.

That's it for their careers then...?

You never know with the PCB.

A disaster of a Australian tour and you might see them back.

Can't be sure of that. If Pakistan go on a losing streak in T20Is, then I wouldn't rule out a recall just before the World T20.

I would definately have mailk in my team..is the best 20 20 cricketers in the world can retire after world cup

Hope so, both should have been gotten rid of 12 years ago!

even their domestic careers are over. Look at their performances in both National T20 and CPL LOL

Hafeez only needs two back to back scores passing the quarter-century
mark in domestic cricket and he will be brought straight back into the team and be full of confidence again.

Malik was actually one of the top performers in this years CPL.

Not that it should mean a recall for him, far from it, more that you should base your argument on facts.

Malik had a good CPL

please check Malik's performance in the last few game against some very good bowling when the pressure was on. He did have some good performances but we need to look at the whole picture when the pressure was on because those performances matter the most.

Never say never in Pakistan cricket.

Anything is possible, nobody is totally out of contention.

It's quite possible that one of these 2 could be the next ODI skipper.

I’m waiting for the odds to go to 200 to 1 before I place a small wager on Malik coming back as captain for the T20 World Cup.

Its Pakistan cricket, do u think we have seen the end of Malik and Hafeez.

My reply was to their Domestic careers being over by one of the posters.

These guys have a had decade long rope for their mediocrity. They should not be recalled in any circumstance.

Good decision. Time to move on and get rid of these nonperforming oldies.

A small comment in the PCB release regarding the T20I squad:

Yes, forward-looking strategy is selecting Irfan and Imran Sr.

Brilliant.

They already cost Pakistan the World Cup, so it’s a good way to bow out and fully representative of their career.

Unless they retire they are not going anywhere. I see this tour as a way for Misbah to say we got no talent in Pakistan.

Mickey Arthur speaking on TV:

"If Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are performing, they could be brought back. Certainly room for one of them, if you look at how 3-5 are playing. Hafeez did well for us in UAE against AUS/NZ and then we had Malik at 5 to finish innings with experience. He ran hard and had enough power to hit balls out of the ground so he played an important role. I'm sure those names will be discussed"

Would take Hafeez over Asif ‘Buttler’ Ali in a heartbeat.

So three months later, they are now part of the selectors’ forward-looking strategy again.

There is no consistency and no logic in terms of our selection process. Absolutely nothing has changed under Misbah, and the blame goes to the people who thought it was a good idea to hand him all the powers.

Its better to be safe rather than sorry. Hacks like Asif and Fakhar will be eaten alive in the WC.Their are no better alternatives for Hafeez and Malik in Pakistan. They may be old and dusty but they can still serve Pakistan in the t20 WC coming up.

Misbah speaking to the press today:

"Hafeez is experienced enough, he has performed in the past. We never said Malik and Hafeez aren't in our plans, we were trying out our pool but we felt we needed them here. Hafeez is experienced and he has so many performances, he is mature. We feel he can contribute to the team and perform for Pakistan"

"If we were scared, we wouldn't take such decisions at all. We have tried to make a combination of new and experienced players. Shoaib Malik is in good form recently and it's good if we utilise him. We are also looking at replacements and new players. There is no such thing such as fear of losing, we are just trying to make the best combination for the T20 World Cup"

"I wouldn't call it a comeback for Hafeez and Malik, we were giving chances to some younger players, it's not that they were discarded from T20 due to bad performances. We will try to give them confidence, they are experienced and I think they can cope and perform for Pakistan"

Dont think they are going anywhere - included in the Pakistan 29-man squad.

These two legends will be seen in the T20s and then wriggle their way Into the World Cup squad at the back of being experienced and then fail as usual.

How long is this punishment for fans going to go on for. These 2 guys that should have gone a decade ago, and they are still playing. Much better players have come and gone, and these 2 poor players are still being picked.

Misbah speaking to the press today:

"We have youngsters like Haider and Khushdil in the squad. But we also need to have a balance in the squad. Juniors should be given exposure in a way that they play with seniors and ready themselves for international cricket. I think Malik and Hafeez have performed well in the previous series. If the T20 WC doesn't happen then it's likely to be next year. That's not so far away and these two can play till then. We're not sure yet but at the moment, they have performed well so we kept them in the team alongside youngsters."

Check the stats of Malik they both decent enough

***massive facepalm***

It is really frustrating being a pakistani cricket fan. The astonishing stupidity that we have to put up with......

I don't care about the stats, he is a poor player and has been for more than decade. Trust your judgement rather than stats. If Malik and Hafeez played for any other country, they would have played for a 4 Yr cycle, not a career lasting 2 decades. This is epic failure, perpetuated by gutless selectors.

I'd like them booted out but if it's just for T20 I don't really care, it's a circus format.

Hafeez averages 20 in 5 t20 world cups with 1 measley 50. Malik fares slightly better .

Anyone who supports their inclusion really does not have an iota of knowledge about their performances in big tournaments . No doubt they score here and there in bilaterals but I rather take a 20 year old youngster even if his output would be the same as a Hafeez ( average of 20). At least their is hope that the youngster can learn from the experience of playing in a bit tournament.

They are still very young. I am sure they got another five years in them.

They have been playing all WCs in the last 15 years can anyone recall one decent innings by either against a non minnow.

:misbah

People talking about them not performing in world cups have no clue Performance at the highest stage against the toughest opposition is overated

We cant discount their huge performances against the likes of zimbabwe over the years

Their experience is vital is we are to achieve another group stage knockout

Is Misbah best mates with Hafeez ? not sure about if he is buddy buddy with Malik as well

I think Malik and Hafeez should be allowed to chose their opposition in WCs.

The selection system is a good one as to pins responsibility on the Director of cricket but Misbah has already destroyed this system with his pathetic, uninspiring choices of ageing players who were never good enough in their prime, never mind now. Mani and WK have done some good stuff but this is a terrible error.

Note the first 2 batsmen Babar names...

----------------------------------------------

[Who do you feel is important in the side when it comes to batting]

Babar: "Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and there is Iftikhar Ahmad on whom I have a lot if confidence as he played so well in Australia for us; Then you have Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim - from top to bottom our team is well balanced, and all players have been playing well"

What is the point of two 40yr old playing bilateral t20s?

Someone should ask the question

To showcase to the world the most exotic and flamboyant batting talent ever to exist.

First Sarfraz now Babar want these two seniors to hold their hand for them.

These guys need to put the long-term future of thr team over personal friendships.

In just under a week Pakistan team will go from having hopes on young kids spearheading the bowling attack - now to two elderly gentlemen being the backbone of the batting line up.

If the youngsters fail then we get coaches and captains hiding behind their youth and inexperience for their failures - but why is there no explanation given when seniors fail (eg. they are old and well past their best ) ? Surely you can’t say Hafeez or Malik are young and short of experience.. (unless you mean experience in the context of being successful , then I agree they are seriously inexperienced).

Huh? Is Babar selecting the team now? With Misbah around and wielding so much power, I doubt Babar has any meaningful say in selection.

Misbah has a clear affinity for these over the hill players, he's had it since his playing days. Azhar, Asad, Abid, IK, Bilal Asif, Wahab, Kashif Bhatti, Hafeez, Malik, Ifthikar, Sarfraz, etc etc.

Long line of 32+ year olds that Misbah want to keep involved across formats, regardless of performances

Wahab is just as bad a selection as Hafeez and Malik, maybe worse.

Who needs a 35-year-old fast bowler, who's never had much control on his bowling, when you have Rauf, Husnain, Amir, Shaheen...

Neither should have played any international cricket after the 2011 world cup. PCB made right decision then to leave Malik out of even the 30 man squad.

Both have been average at international level, but as we are a mediocre team with little understanding or knowledge of cricket, we will label them "legends" and "seniors".

Hafeez was a very good Allrounder before his ban in 2014

Only competent young batsmen can end their careers and nothing else.

If Haider and co fail again then these people will stay another few years.

People need to understand that they will keep getting selected if the new guys do not perform consistently. After the humiliation we received from Australia our skipper Babar Azam asked for Hafeez and Malik. Doesn't that say enough?

But young batsmen have to be given a chance. Nobody remembers T20s(bar the T20 WC) for more than a few days, so I am not sure what we lose if we keep playing the young players because we may discover a gem. Instead, we chose 2 guys who are never going anywhere in their careers, with their best days finishing a decade ago.

Totally agree.

Can't expect young batsmen to outperform Hafeez and Malik without being given a long rope.

Exactly.

But you should know by now that Pakistani captains/coaches are result oriented and don't plan for the future. Their priorities are saving their job and avoiding media criticism. The reason Babar asked for Hafeez, Malik after getting humiliated by Australia.

Yeah Babar said he wanted Hafeez and Malik recalled for the Bangladesh series. And Misbah, with his fetish for seniority, obviously had no hesitation.

Weird. Either the obsession with seniority is spreading, or individuals are being more selfish in pursuit of self-preservation (Babar promoting Hafeez/Malik to make sure they reciprocate in their media appreances)

Quite disappointing

Babar should be told no. If Babar can't work with young players, then he shouldn't be captain in T20. I personally think he should play as a Batsman only.

The likes of Haider Ali and khusdil shah hopefully get a good run before they deemed failures . A couple of series especially in t20s which will probably result in 5-6 t20s.

Problem is we are to impatient. If Haider does not succeed in his first few innings he will be called a “hack” and then it just goes downhill from their.

Hafeez averages 20 in 5 t20 world cups . I rather Haider Ali play in the next World Cup . Even if he averages 20 at least he is young and can learn . Hafeez has never learnt . His experience counts for zilch.

Doubt khushdil shah will get a chance ahead of Malik hafeez or ifti but hopefully he does

Babar does have a say. Who else do you think would’ve picked Usman Qadir?

Honestly you don't need either Malik or Hafeez. Both are replaceable with Amer Yamin and Umar Amin. People forget about Yamin's bowling in the PSL.

Usman Qadir is quite decent but since he doesn't offer much with the bat you gotta go with Imad and Shadab
He got kicked out of Australia, a country where the premier limited overs spinner is Zampa...

He’s garbage and his performances throughout his career are indicative of that.

He was ok in the PSL, might not hurt to get a game but it might be tough to get him in with the t20 team being so competitive to get into
