What's new

England (142/6) defeat Sri Lanka (141/8) by 4 wickets to qualify for the SF of the T20 World Cup

15 of 15.. pressure can do funny things. A botched job by ingerlund so far. They need to hit out now.

Stokes is dragging this out. Come on the Ingerlund, bash a couple of fours and qualify.

England should win this tournament. They are the best team in the tournament followed by New Zealand and then India at 3rd spot.

Australia are 4th, Saffers 5th while Sri Lanka at 6. Pakistan and Zimbabwe are tied for 7th spot

England is the worst. Their main strength is bullying opposition with batting. So far it has not happened. One of the worst in terms of strike rate. Boring cricket.

I feel Woakes will win this with Stokes.

Harry brook has been horrible in this tournament.
He has scored only 36 runs in 4 innings at an average of 9.

Easy win for Eng...They still expect lower order to finish easily in 19th over.

Even Adil has a few first class centuries. England unnecessarily panicked.
Nass already talking about super over :)

Five off the last over.

Hope it doesn’t come down to one off one.

Well played Eng - The best T20 side...followed by AU, Pak, SA, and NZ. I wish 4 off the 5 would have been in SF instead of a 3rd rate Ind without Bumrah.

SL 141/8 (20)
ENG 142/6 (19.2) CRR: 7.34
England won by 4 wkts

Sensible from Ben stokes.
All the guys from England play for their strike rate.
They just needed to bat like Ben stokes but instead they all just couldn't bat according to the situation.

Actually no team is good. NZ is the close to perfect. On certain grounds some teams come a cropper. It is almost down where they play

Intelligent watchful innings from Stokes. Pants from Brook and Livingstone.

90% said Australia will be in the final before world T20. They were a poor side even in 2021.

Australia never deserved any luck as they fielded a cheat called Wade in the XI.

Their players are generally good at crying.

Australia was never a good T20 side. They play some C string side in all the bilaterals. Suddenly they gather and play world T20. They never gel as a unit. THey are all old and not upto date with modern demands. Skillwise, strategy wise they are behind. They rely on some individual brilliance.

Joe Root has a place in this England team. He should have been batting at 4 if Barstow was not available. He is better than Steven Smith and Kane Williamson.

England defeated Sri Lanka in their final Super 12 encounter at the SCG in Sydney on Saturday by four wickets to book their berth in the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Pathum Nissanka Shines but England restrict Sri Lanka to 141

The Sri Lankan openers put on a stand of 39 runs in the first four overs and at 80/2 at the end of 10 overs, Sri Lanka were in a very good position in the game. Although Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva departed, Nissanka carried on and made his way to a fine knock of 67 from 45 deliveries.

Sri Lanka were 118/4 when Nissanka departed and things started going haywire after that as they scored only 23 runs from their last 27 deliveries in the innings. The England bowlers clawed their way back into the game after a difficult start and kept the target within a chaseable limit.

Buttler and Hales get England off to a flying start

England needed a steady start to chase the target down and they got more than that as Alex Hales and Jos Buttler put on an opening stand of 75 runs. The batters looked at absolute ease against the Sri Lankan pacers. While Buttler played the second fiddle in the partnership, scoring 28 from 23 deliveries, Hales blasted his way to 47 from 30 deliveries.

Hasaranga gets Sri Lanka back into the game

Buttler and Hales looked in a hurry to finish the game off but Wanindu Hasaranga had other plans as he sent both batters back to their dug out in consecutive overs.

Those two wickets triggered a collapse and England went on to lose four more wickets in the space of just 47 runs, making the chase extremely difficult for themselves.

Stokes guides England home

While wickets kept tumbling at one end, Ben Stokes played a calm and composed knock from the other end as he remained unbeaten on 42 from 36 deliveries. The experienced all-rounder took the game deep and Chris Woakes finished the chase off with a boundary in the final over.

England won the match by four wickets and two deliveries to spare, and also booked a semi-final berth in the process while knocking out Australia.

The wicket seemed much tougher to bat on as the innings went on, especially beyond the point of the Powerplay overs - as we saw in both the innings - therefore, it was most intelligent on the part of Alex Hales to have gone on a leather-hunt at the very start. The belligerent start meant that Sri Lanka were always going to be behind in the game by the margin of one single boundary - and exactly so it happened in the end. There´s a reason why this England team is one of the best in the world right now.

A hugely disappointing campaign for the Asian Champions which included a defeat against Namibia and two matches against Australia and New Zealand where they were brushed aside with much ease. It was men versus boys for most parts of the tournament for them. It´s back to the drawing board for them, although one must bear in mind that their team composition and style of play was never meant for these Australian conditions. In familiar conditions, conditions that they´re used to, they would´ve posed a threat to the other teams.
