What's new

England (657 & 264/7d) defeat Pakistan (579 & 268) by 74 runs to win the 1st Test in Rawalpindi

Dont think light will hold on for more than 10 mins. If these 2 can survive another 10 mins Pak can escape with a draw.

Think this is my favourite scenario in a test match (unless my team is playing).

Tailenders fighting to save a match.

Naseem and Ali good so far.

Have a bad feeling England get this wicket.

England and Stokes will be exhausted after this effort. If they cant win this, PAK will have the psych advantage

Mammon's Assessment About pak is always spot on , Again in the end it proved he was right in his assessments.

Pakistan is no Better than their captain in test cricket, A Captain is reflection of a team.

Man, this england team has balls of steel. they are changing test cricket

Thank you England for turning that into an entertaining match. What a 5th day.

What a slap on the face of Babar and Rambo. They created these dull pitches so that both England and Pakistab bat for two days and secure a draw but England came up with batting at 7rpo to enforce result in the match. Shame on Pakistan team.

Feel bad for Naseem.

Great test, everything McCullum and Stokes touches turns to gold atm.

Might be tough for Pakistan to come back here.

Well deserved win for England. Greatest ever captaincy I have ever seen. Be it scoring rate, field setting when nothing was working for bowlers, early declaration.

For me Stokes deserves the man of the match for incredible captaincy.

England will win the series by 3-0. Our current team has no future!!!!!

Only the third win for England on Pakistani soil in their entire history - 1961, 2000 and now 2022.

Pakistan's negative approach backfires in their faces yet again - when will these clowns learn ? Babar and Saqlain get exactly what they deserved.

Pakistan losing this minutes away from close is quite a fitting end.

Clowns thought they are good in having game plans with a bunch of school dropouts who dont even have a brain to think rationally.

Saqlain will blab again and praise English team and the pitch. Ramiz will still be chairman. Nothing will happen. Our team is as good as WI, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in test.

England scored a staggering 923 runs in 137 overs. They made Pakistan play for 3 and a half days. One of the best test cricket victories ever. Truly remarkable. Stuff of champions from baz and stokes

This has to go down as one of the bravest and greatest wins ever. Well done England!!! Incredible stuff.

Pakistan will be gutted.

England make test cricket worth watching, playing ODI style innings, truly deserved win.

On a pitch deliberately designed for batsmen stat padding and a boring draw, England have a remarkable victory now. Kudos to England & stokes for batting with that run rate and a bold declaration.

Shameful and embarrassing. The captain has to take most of the blame.

BOOOMMMMMMMM

What a win! Give Ben Stokes a knighthood right now.

It's a great time to be an English cricket fan!

Unlucky Pakistan, thanks for a great match.

Babar is completely clueless at presentation.
He is not understanding the question, talking something else.

It must have been a very boring rivalry for decades atleast when played in Pakistan until the 2005 series. Till then there were 17 draws and 2 wins each.

What a win for England. What a test match. Hard luck, Pakistan, fought well but in the end just fell short.

Ben Stokes was rewarded for his bold declaration and attacking fields as England completed a famous 74-run victory over Pakistan in a thrilling final session of the first Test in Rawalpindi.

Jack Leach trapped Naseem Shah (6) lbw in the fading light as Pakistan were dismissed for 268 and Stokes became just the third England captain, after Ted Dexter in 1961 and Nasser Hussain in 2000, to win a Test match in Pakistan.

Stokes had declared at tea on day four, dangling the carrot for Pakistan by giving them four sessions to score 343 and hoping that chance of a win would embolden the hosts and hand England a better chance of prising the 10 wickets they required.

Pakistan were favourites at tea on day five, having turned their overnight 80-2 into 257-5 and needing just a further 86 runs to take a 1-0 lead ahead of Friday's second Test in Multan.

But Ollie Robinson cracked the game open for England by removing set batters Agha Salman (30) and Azhar Ali (40) - snapping a stand of 61 for the sixth wicket from 198-5 - from reverse-swinging deliveries with the old ball, which Stokes had persevered with despite the new one being available.

Wicketkeeper Ollie Pope then took a stunning catch down the leg-side off James Anderson to remove Zahid Mahmood (1), before Anderson pinned Haris Rauf (0) lbw two deliveries later in a double-wicket maiden to leave Pakistan nine down and England on the brink.

Naseem and Mohammad Ali (0) frustrated England, with Naseem edging Stokes between Pope and slip fielder Joe Root, but Leach finally had the former pinned lbw with the new ball as England recorded an astonishing triumph on the flattest of surfaces.

England's success was clinched by Leach but manufactured by Stokes, who deserves enormous credit for risking defeat in order to push for victory and provide an entertaining finale, with his positive leadership and his side's blistering batting throughout the Test ensuring both teams had a shot at glory on the final day.

England took two wickets on the fourth evening - Abdullah Shafique (6) and Babar Azam (4) out to bouncers from Robinson and Stokes respectively - and would have had a third had substitute fielder Keaton Jennings been able to snaffle Saud Shakeel (76) at short leg on 22 off the bowling of left-arm spinner Leach.

Shakeel made the most of the reprieve by scoring a fifty on Test debut, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 87 with Rizwan from 89-3 after Anderson had Imam-ul-Haq (48) caught down the leg-side by Pope during a first hour which brought only 13 runs.

Pakistan were 93-3 at drinks, with Rizwan scoreless from 23 deliveries, after Anderson and Robinson had bowled frugally but the tempo changed once spin was introduced, starting when Rizwan cracked Will Jacks for two leg-side fours in the over after the break.

Rizwan continued to target Jacks, Leach and Joe Root - striking two sixes amid a pre-lunch boundary flurry - while Shakeel began to open up, too, and clinched his fifty from 104 balls with a four off Leach.

Stokes was always in the game as captain, geeing up his team and persisting with ultra-aggressive fields, but was not seen with the ball until immediately after lunch as Pakistan resumed on 169-3, needing a further 174 runs for victory.

It was fellow seamer Anderson who made the breakthrough, forcing Rizwan to snick a ball in the channel outside off stump through to Pope, and England were bouncing when Jennings belatedly atoned for shelling Shakeel on Sunday night by pouching him superbly at short cover on Monday afternoon, off the bowling of Robinson.

Azhar and Salman frustrated England as Stokes, Robinson and Anderson found some reverse swing - Stokes getting through a bone-jarring 11-over spell - with both players beaten on their outside edge and seeing in-duckers target their pads and stumps.

It was the spin of Leach that came close to engineering another wicket but ball-tracking said his delivery to Salman would have bounced over the stumps, while when Pope dropped Azhar down the leg-side off Robinson in the final over before tea, the tourists' heads could have dropped.

Stokes was having none of it, chatting to his team on the field before they headed in for the break to remind them they could still force a positive result and was then rewarded for opting not to bring the fresh Kookaburra in to play, as well as his use of DRS, as Robinson had Salman trapped leg before on review.

Robinson then forced Azhar to whip to Root at leg slip in his next over, before the tail were, ultimately, no match for England as the tourists marked their first Test in Pakistan since 2005 with victory - one which Stokes instigated as he stuck true to his word about making the longest format a must-watch spectacle.

One team wanted to win and the other one was hoping for a draw.

England deserve this epic win.

Cricket won, anti-cricket lost.

Only positive is Pakistani bowlers will be fresh for the next two tests as they have only bowled 130 overs while made the opponent bowlers tired by making them bowl 250 overs!

Babar Azam:

We were not upto the mark. Had a golden chance in the second innings, but session by session we lost wickets. Our bowling group is young. Unfortunately Haris injured himself in the first innings. All credit to the bowlers who bowled well and tried without Haris. We try to stick to our plans. Difficult when opponent goes at 7 an over. We had an opportunity in the second innings. But we didn't get partnerships in the end. Lot of positives. Our batting performed very well. Bowling also very well.

Babar: We had a golden chance to win the match in the second innings
Speaking on Sky Sports, Pakistan captain Babar Azam...

"We start with the bowling, but we are not up to the mark. After that, we try to up our score in the first innings. I think in the second innings, we had a golden chance to win the match.

"But session by session we lost wickets. I think our bowling line up is young. Rauf was inured in the first innings. All credit to our bowlers after the injury, they bowled really we. Credit to the England team.

"We expected the declaration, and we had a plan. But I think we have an opportunity to win, but we lost wickets and didn't build partnerships.

Only Naseem and Ali will be in the next test surely, Haris needs to be replaced by Fahim only he can bowl ecnomically and bat. Abrar to replace Zahid.

Both teams made out a great game on a lifeless pathetic pitch. Positive England mindset won them the game so they deserve the win. They also deserve it for PCB preparing a flat pan so all can toil hard and Pak can escape with a cheap win, well it fired back.

Not that this defeat or Australian defeat ll teach PCB any lesson to overhaul condition of tracks. Expecting same roads in next two Test, and now that we have lost, Ramiz will make sure of it.

Twice that Pakistan has failed to chase winnable targets on Day 5 in Pakistan against Australia and England.

That performance against Sri Lanka was an anomaly and even then we lost the next test match on an easier pitch.

If you want to win test matches then you need to be able to chase in the fourth innings. Playing for a draw never works and ultimately costs the team which has been the case with us

Its easier to talk about playing aggressive cricket in press conferences but harder to do it in a match situation under pressure.

Pakistan can't have such a weak tail. Also when you play three pacers then atleast two have to have the ability to touch 140 km/hr plus.

I would play Faheem Ashraf in place of Azhar Ali and bring in Abrar for Zahid Mehmood and find a domestic pacer who can bowl at a decent clip in place of Rauf.

People blaming pakistan for losing to this England side, a bit harsh, this England team would be good for many teams, both at home and away so we shouldnt be too overly harsh, yes constructive critiscim where its due but not unnecessary trolling.

pak's management/coach/captain fully deserve this loss for their attitude of wanting the draw, starting right from the process of preparing the pitch. happened against AUS, happening now.

Pakistani batters should've scored 700-750 in 1st innings. This pitch was very flat.

Fantastic win for the Ingerlund!

7 wins and one loss for Bazball.

Stokes has had an incredible start as skipper and could go on to have a fantastic leadership record.

It is just a cricket match. There is no need to get upset. The better team won.PCB disappointed a lot of people by preparing a flat pitch again.PCB should get Australian curators to make Australian type pitches.

I’m absolutely being blown away by this captain, this head coach, this team, and this result.

Head over heels.

So proud of them.

One of the top England sides of my time. The Brearley, Nasser, Vaughan and Strauss outfits also spring to mind.

Key / BMac / Stokes have taken a malfunctioning team and turned it into winners.

Well played Nassem...defended 46 balls.
He tried his very best to save Pakistan from losing.

Feel sorry & well played for the man who lost Pakistan the match?

He conceded 206 runs in 33.5 overs at an embarrassing economy rate of 6.19 runs per over.

He was nothing but a disaster in this match, as he has been for 99% of his Test career so far. He was the single biggest reason for Pakistan losing this match.

Congratulations to England! Well played!

They clearly showed why they are class apart from Pakistan.

The reasons Pakistan Lost
1. They dropped Fawad
2. Two worst ever debutant bowler playing together

Top Worst run rate for a team (total 200 plus) (Bazball in the history)
Australia during mid 2010s bullying teams on flat tracks.

3 draws, 6 losses out of 10 such innings

The curse of dropping Fawad. Pakistan will loose 3-0

Fawad was badly exposed against Australia and went missing against Sri Lanka. The guy is 37. He was not going to make a difference against England who would have planned against him. Pakistan needs to introduce young blood in their batting line up.

Only Haris to be replaced by Faheem due to his batting plus point, and ability to keep it tight, and Abrar for Zahid.

Need someone in for Azhar Ali as well. You are playing with ten men with him in the side.

jnaveen1980 will you now give some credit to England for their victory, as promised.

Congratulations to England!

Ben Stokes and his team deserved to win for their brave (some thought it was foolhardy..) declaration.

Pat Cummins made a similar bold decision when Australia won the final test in Lahore.

Fortune favours the brave!!

One word, INTENT!

England showed intent. This is hopelessly missing from recent Pakistan captains including Babar Azam.

Inzi, Misbah, Azhar and Babar all very defensive..

Younis Khan was the last attacking captain we had.

Imran Khan used to make similar bold declarations during the 80s to try and win the game.

Because England batted so quickly it allowed them enough time to force a result despite the very flat pitch and despite Pakistan making almost 600 themselves.

Australia always bat positively in tests scoring at 4-5 runs per over. England seem to have taken this to a new level, 6.5-7 rpo!!

It remains to be seen whether England can do the same in Australia. They got thrashed by Australia 4-0 in the away Ashes last year. However, Stokes was not the captain then

Pakistan badly missed Shaheen Shah Afridi here on a flat pitch..

Fast bowlers bowl in tandem. Rauf and Nadeem Shah would have been more effective with Afridi bowling from the other end.

England will be further strengthened by the inclusion of Mark Wood, who bowls at 150+ Kph, in the next game.

I feel that Pakistan needs to make at least three changes for the next test.

Shadab or Nawaz should replace Zahid (just not good enough at this level)

Hasnain (who can also bowl @ 150+) should come in for Mohammed Ali (lacks serious pace to trouble the batsmen on such flat tracks)

Azhar should be replaced by Shan Masood. Azhar mainly playing because of seniority and past record, a curse of sub-continental culture!! Failed to score big runs against Australia too.

Both Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman are young deserve to be given more chances.

Not sure if anyone noticed. Agha survived 2 lbw shouts before the tea break which were extremely close. He was on 30. He got out after tea. Also lbw. Still on 30.

Azhar survived leg glance chance when Pope dropped him before tea. Got out after tea to a leg glance.

Both batsmen didn't actually change any of their approach after the close calls, neither did anything to upset the bowler's lines. It's not just timid limited batting but also there's no sense of much game awareness. It's a weakness that's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Yes credit where it is due. I merely went by the bowling composition. I don't doubt their batting. But bowling looked too light weight to take 20 wickets.

Thankyou. And I do agree. It’s a modest attack that took the field in this Test. The bowlers were made to look particularly good because of the captaincy & field placings, and the scoreboard pressure.

Was blown away by Stokes field placements- loved watching his attacking field throughout. Great captaincy!
