What's new

England beat Pakistan by 3 wickets in the first Test at Manchester in a close encounter

This is the difference in two line ups.

In these conditions, England have Woakes as first change

Bar Abbas, our seamers haven't looked very potent

Very happy with the field placement for Root vs Abbas. Players like Root and Williamson who play it late and like to dab it to third man can be forced to go hard it if we block this angle. Abbas needs to stay disciplined.

Losing this series will be more beneficial for pakistan , we may finally get rid of azhar and asad.
Wish it were true but won't happen. Both Azhar and Asad will squeeze a 50 in one of the six innings.

Seniority culture is a toxic one in our cricket and society. Not easy to get rid off especially when your coach is the biggest advocate of it.

I'd actually have more faith in Misbah in this situation than Azhar. He was in a lot of 4th innings situations like this.

Whereas I've never seen Azhar win a Test with his captaincy.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

OK, good. YS around the wicket into the rough. Now he can load the on-side, with 2 sweepers and a midwicket, leg-slip/short fine, mid on etc. Either they keep playing football, or try and make room to drive/cut. YS, needs to hold his line. They need to give in first. Looks like someone spoke sense over lunch but let’s give AA the benefit of the doubt.

There were no demons in the pitch doing Pakistan’s 2nd innings as well. It was pure self destruction:

I know right. Given how easy the batting conditions are now, Pakistan should have still been batting out their second innings.

England would have had no chance on a day 5 pitch.

That’s fine. In fact, if Abbas can keep up, would want another 5 from him before bringing on SK (also around wicket). Good odd bounce from Abbas.

Abbas has been bowling well has contained the score card here. But really hoping he sneaks a wicket here

I know, that’s obviously ideal. But if Abbas can hold one end (he’s not just holding, he’s also threatening a bit). And YS’s angle will make it hard to hit him without taking undue risk (given field setting). That’s the point.

This is poor - no need to go over the wicket for YS yet. He needs a square leg Inside circle if he really wants to bowl this.

Hate to say this, but we need some solid breakthroughs here. Not sure what NS’s brief is.

It is criminal Pakistan put slips too deep. It was a missed chance off Naseem. And they are still too far back - is that self preservation?

Sibley has been very impressive in adapting to spin. He was pretty bad against roston chase. he has now suddenly learned which balls to leave and how to use his feet against yasir.

a quick learner

The slip cordon really has to come up now. This is either stupid or very cowardly.

Yes he did but I was talking about mostly what he's been doing.

Fair enough. But my only point is given the turn and bounce uncertainty from the rough, its an attritional game then. Makes it hard to score and if YS is disciplined then it’s ON. It can keep low and bowl him, turn around legs etc.

Seriously the the think tank seem to be absolutely clueless of what to plan and how to go about it.

300 would have always had a psychological effect on England and Pakistan would have felt that there is a better chance with that for the bowlers to go out and defend.

Especially with so much time in the match that was a bare minimum they needed to get to have more chances with the ball.

Yasir has not been great in this innings. Need him to improve for us to have a chance of winning.

Pakistam threw this away with their 2nd innings display.

Pathetic mentality from the team. How can you be so complacent.

Have a bad feeling SSA will let the pressure off so Abbas and NS’s lines important.

England's patient batting here is a good example of how poor our batsmen were yesterday. England's captain is fighting it out. Ours is working hard on polishing his beard.

To have a lead of 100 and then to be skittled for 169 is criminal

Yesterday session after tea was the game changer
