India has been the top bowling unit when playing away so let's check how Eng compares with India.

.............................

Bowling units allowing tons when playing away - last 5 years.

Indian bowling unit allowed: 9 tons ( 27 tests)

Vs

Eng bowling unit allowed: 33 tons ( 32 tests) -

.................................

India has been the top bowling unit so I won't expect Eng to match India when playing away, but I did not expect Eng to be so poor. Eng bowling unit has allowed on average 1 ton in each test when playing outside. While Indians have allowed 1 ton for every 3 tests.

Yes, the home season for English bowlers is coming and they will do well collectively, but it seems they have a pretty poor record when playing away.

---------

Just for reference,

Pakistan gave: 26 tons ( 25 tests)
Aus gave - 14 tons ( 20 tests)

Pakistan has done equally bad as Eng, but not unexpected given inexperienced attack. Eng has Anderson and Broad with 1100+ test wickets, but Eng has not been able to stop opposition batsmen from scoring tons. It is not just about turning tracks in India, it's about 30+ tests while playing away.

What do you think?

You can change the opposition filter to check for all other bowling units,

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...template=results;type=batting;view=opposition

Smith - 3 tons
Kohli - 2 tons
Marsh & Marsh - 2 tons each
Pujara - 2 tons
Vijay - 2 tons
Kane - 2 tons

Now forget about the top order batsmen, Look at the tons scored by some names here

Holder/Chase/Dowrich/Watling/ Bavuma/Ahswin/Santner/Yadav

Outside of them,

Rohit/Khwaja/Latham/Mathews/Nair/Nicholls/Rahul/Santner/Tamim/Taylor...... List goes on

It seems top order and tail, both find it easy to score a ton against Eng. It's a different thing for a tail to wag, but scoring a ton is a different issue.

Anderson and Broad have been pretty useless in cleaning up tails otherwise it's just not possible for tails to score so many tons. Archer is only good for 1st spell and then starts saying that no one can bowl fast in 2nd and 3rd spell.

Eng really needs to pay attention to this if they want to compete in Ashes. You can't do well if you allow tails to regularly score ton agasint you.

India is unlucky to always have unbalanced teams. Imagine current bowling line up with our ATG Batting line up of Fab 5. Would have won a lot.
Our overseas batting, bar Virat in few tours has not been good. Lets see with Pant/Gill/Sundar etc do our fortunes change overseas.

That would become an ATG team. It is rare and that's why it does not happen often.

Gill/Sundar/Pant won't be able to change fortune in Eng unless top-order scores some runs. Sundar won't even play.
