England Men's Head Coach Chris Silverwood has named a 15-player preliminary squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman.

Jason Roy (Surrey)
David Willey (Yorkshire)

Mark Wood (Durham)

Travelling Reserves

Tom Curran (Surrey)
Liam Dawson (Hampshire)
James Vince (Hampshire)

Sussex fast bowler Tymal Mills returns to the international set-up for the first time since February 2017.

This summer, the left-arm quick has been impressive in the Vitality T20 Blast, where he has helped Sussex reach Finals Day at Edgbaston later this month. He also showcased his skills will great accomplishment in The Hundred, helping Southern Brave lift the trophy in the tournament's inaugural year.

Durham's Ben Stokes was not available for selection and continues to take an indefinite break from all cricket to prioritise his mental wellbeing.

England have until 10 October to finalise their squad ahead of the tournament.

England Men's Head Coach, Chris Silverwood, said:

"We are excited about the prospect of challenging to win the ICC T20 World Cup. I believe we have selected a squad that covers all bases and has the depth to be successful in what is expected to be a very competitive tournament featuring the best players in the world.

"Tymal Mills deserves his inclusion and has demonstrated over the past couple of years, but particularly this summer that he has all skills to succeed at this level. His exceptional pace is a standout, and the way he has spearheaded Sussex and Southern Brave's respective attacks in the short-form game has shown that he relishes the pressures of the big stage. He will add variety to our bowling unit, and we can't wait to see him play in a major international tournament."

As part of the team’s build up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, England are scheduled to play four warm-up matches including a two-match T20I series against Pakistan with both matches due to take place at the Rawalpindi International Stadium on 14-15 October.

Hmm only two spinners. That too relying too much on Moeen probably not a good idea.
Nice variety of Pacers though Left and Right Arm both.

Batting is as solid as ever. Should reach semi finals.

Without ben stokes, england is weak. The guy is an atg player. He helped his team win the world cup and ashes. Wish he was there jn the world t20. Woul have lit up the tournament.

Anyways, the brand of cricket england plays makes there batting strong. But there bowling has no good spinners for uae

Well he helped them to lose a T-20 WC as well so even stevens i guess.
But yeah the balance goes off because of him. With him they could have played 3 spinners and still keep the batting firepower. Big miss will be Archer, he was really good in last years IPL in UAE.

He is not that good in T20Is

Stokes absence is a blessing in disguise for England. He is not a good T20 player and a match winner in this format like a Hardik Pandya.

With no Stokes, England can play Buttler, Bairstow, Livingstone, Malan and Root also. Root is important for them in these UAE conditions on dry wickets. Even if not Root, Billings will do a great job for them.

Stokes struggles vs spin and his two overs bowling would have been pointless in these conditions.

Sam Curran is important for them as he will bring the tactical accumen that he will learn from Dhoni in IPL and this might just give an edge to England going into World T20s compared to other teams.

What a squad....yet England seem hell bent on squandering their own chances. Saqib is one of the best, if not the best pace bowler England have in such conditions but he isn't even reserve? Why are the medium pace Curran brothers around?

Other than that, all as expected. Rashid is an ATG LOI, Moeen is a great utility player.

Ben Stokes will be missed but hey ho, what can one do?

Root isn't even in the squad :facepalm

In terms of Root, I think he is an exceptional LOI player and used to be a very good anchor in the T20 game but I fully understand the selectors looking to go with big hitters.

Root performed so well in the Tests recently, perhaps they don't want him to bat T20 way like so many of Indian batsmen did in the current tour

my bad, I was refering to the Ben Stokes and Jack leach innings. i thought the series drawed allowed England retaining the ashes but Australia entered as defending champs

I highly doubt they will play malan and root in the same team

Liam Livingstone could rip apart this tournament.

Unless the pitches turn, England favourites imo.

Would’ve been favourites had they picked Hales.

My XI

Jason Roy
Johnny Bairstow
Dawid Malan
Eoin Morgan (c)
Jos Buttler (wk)
Liam Livingston (2)
Moeen Ali (2)
David Willey (4)
Adil Rashid (4)
Chris Woakes (4)
Mark Wood (4)

Probably the most balanced line up in the WT20.

3 spinners, 3 pacers and they bat till 10.

He was pivotal during 2015 Ashes victory though.

Dawson should have been in the main squad ahead of Curran or Billings.
Curran would be a taken apart by batters once the PP is over.

They may struggle in the death overs of the bowling.

If England bat first they should be able to post 180+ easily, and chasing 180 vs Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Livingstone on spin friendly pitches will be difficult to do. Their pace bowling is their weakness but the batting makes up for it.

Moeen and Livingstone are inconsistent they can't e relied upon with the ball and like you said the pace bowling also worries be espuxally in the death

Surrey and England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with a lower back injury.

Curran complained of back pain after Chennai Super Kings Indian Premier League fixture on Saturday against Rajasthan Royals. Results of the scan revealed the injury. He will fly back to the UK in the next couple of days and will have further scans and a full review later this week from the ECB’s medical team.

Curran’s brother, Tom, has been drafted into England’s squad for the T20 World Cup. In addition, Surrey’s Reece Topley has been added as a travelling reserve. Topley will join the England party in due course.

The England players and management not at the IPL arrived at their Muscat base earlier today and will remain in Oman until 16 October before moving to Dubai for the start of the tournament.

LONDON: Chris Jordan says England’s 2016 World Twenty20 final heartbreak against the West Indies made them a stronger team as Eoin Morgan’s side seek redemption in this year’s tournament.

England had one hand on the trophy in Kolkata before Carlos Brathwaite smashed Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes to win the match for the Caribbean side.

Three years later England became world champions in the 50-over format and they are among the favourites for this year’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, starting on Sunday.

Jordan conceded only eight runs in the penultimate over of the 2016 final, leaving the West Indies needing 19 off six balls bowled by Stokes and he admonished himself for prematurely thinking the game was over.

“I’ll never take myself to that place again,” said the 33-year-old seamer.

“I definitely won’t be thinking that way after bowling the 19th over until it’s fully, fully over. We tend to laugh about it now, but we definitely came out stronger for it as a unit.

“I wouldn’t say it haunted us too much. Someone has to come up victorious and for something like that to be done in the last over, you can’t write that.”

Jordan believes England, the top-ranked T20 side, now make ‘clearer’ decisions in crunch moments, which he said helped during the victorious 2019 World Cup campaign.

“The team was on autopilot,” he said. “In any situation you saw the game slow down a little bit and everyone came up with an informed and correct decision.”

England captain Eoin Morgan says he would consider dropping himself at the T20 World Cup if his poor form with the bat continues.

The left-hander has scored only 82 runs at an average of 11.71 in seven Twenty20 innings for England this year.

Morgan managed 133 at an average of 11.08 in the Indian Premier League (IPL), although he led Kolkata Knight Riders to last week's final.

"I will not stand in the way of the team winning the World Cup," he said.

"I've been short on runs but my captaincy has been pretty good."

Asked whether he would be prepared to drop himself, Morgan said: "That is always an option."

Morgan was rested as Jos Buttler captained England in their seven-wicket defeat by India in Dubai on Monday.

England face New Zealand in their final warm-up game in Dubai on Thursday, before playing West Indies in their opening group game in Dubai on Saturday.

Morgan made two ducks and reached double figures only once in his past nine IPL innings, but he said he will "continue to take risks" in the England middle order.

"I wouldn't be standing here if I hadn't come out of every bad run of form that I've ever had," he said.

"The nature of T20 cricket and where I bat means I always have to take high-risk options. I've come to terms with that."

Morgan, who led England to the T20 World Cup final in 2016 and won the 50-over World Cup in 2019, does not think his form will impact his captaincy.

"I've always managed to compartmentalise both and treat them as two different challenges," he said.

"Not being a bowler, being a little bit older and contributing less in the field, I've loved the role of captain.

"You get two bites at the cherry when it comes at impacting the game."

Morgan said England players will join West Indies in taking a knee before their game in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Players from both sides took a knee - and several West Indies players raised a right hand covered by a black glove - before each of the three Tests they played in England in 2020.

They were criticised by West Indies legend Michael Holding for not continuing with the gesture beyond that series.

England players wore T-shirts carrying messages of anti-discrimination in a 'moment of unity' before home matches this summer.

Morgan said: "For further games at the World Cup, we've been speaking to the ICC (International Cricket Council) about the potential 'moment of unity' before the game which we've been doing at home, but it hasn't been cleared whether that's a possibility."

Scotland and Papua New Guinea players took the knee before their T20 World Cup game on Tuesday.

Liam Livingstone is "fine and fully fit" after suffering a blow on the finger during England's T20 World Cup warm-up defeat to India on Monday, captain Eoin Morgan has confirmed.

Livingstone left the field in Dubai after being hit on the little finger on his left hand as he attempted to catch India batter Rishabh Pant.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said the 28-year-old would be assessed once the swelling had subsided and Morgan revealed on Tuesday that his team-mate had been given the all-clear.

Stokes is not being missed as much. They have covered for him but Archer is a huge miss. They are basically forced to play Woakes - a bloke who has only played 2 t20is in 5 years and that too against a hapless Sri Lankan side.

No team has ever held the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup at the same time. England look as good a chance as any side ever has to pull it off, going into the tournament as the No.1 team in the world. Having gone all the way to the final in 2016 in India, they have unfinished business and knowledge that they have it in them to be successful in Asian conditions.

England may not be at their full strength going into the World Cup, with several notable players absent, but write them off at your own peril.

With a long list of players who are almost custom-made for T20 cricket, Eoin Morgan’s men have also been responsible for changing the manner in which the format is played.

Be it the aggressive approach from ball one or having a tail that sometimes doesn't start until No.11, England’s attitude towards the shortest form of the game makes them one of the most entertaining teams in the competition.

Ahead of their opening match on Saturday, we take an in-depth look at England’s squad.

**********

England’s shock group-stage exit in the 2015 World Cup forced them to turn a corner in white-ball cricket. Since then they have had a strong case to be considered the best team in limited-overs cricket. Their performance in the two ICC Men's World Cups during that period - runners-up in T20 World Cup 2016 and champions in Cricket World Cup 2019 - give a clear indication of their levels in the shorter formats.

On paper, England have one of the strongest sides at the World Cup. Though they will be without the services of Jofra Archer (injury), Sam Curran (back injury), and Ben Stokes (on an indefinite break to focus on his mental health) they have able backups in Tymal Mills, Tom Curran and Liam Livingstone, with the latter already showing glimpses of what he is capable of in England colours.

England’s squad has all the bases covered to go very deep into the tournament. The squad is replete with explosive batters, starting with Jason Roy and Jos Buttler at the top and No.1 ranked T20I batter, Dawid Malan, at one-down. In Bairstow, Livingstone, Moeen Ali and Morgan, they have players who are all capable of playing the finisher’s role.

Ali and Adil Rashid will lead the spin attack in conditions that will have a lot to offer. On the pace bowling front, England have an envious variety in their ranks that can cause trouble to opposition batters irrespective of the surface.

They have the means and they also have the motivation.

No side has ever held the Men's Cricket World Cup and T20 World Cup trophies at the same time. An England victory here would make history and confirm their status as one of the greatest limited overs teams ever established.

The squad

Eoin Morgan(c), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Tymal Mills, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Their matches

23 Oct – v West Indies

27 Oct – v B2

30 Oct – v Australia

1 Nov – v A1

6 Nov – v South Africa

Tournament history
Best finish: Champions - 2010

England beat their arch-rivals Australia in the Final of the T20 World Cup 2010 in Barbados. Having fallen short in three ICC events before - at the 1979 World Cup against the West Indies, 1987 World Cup against Australia and 1992 World Cup against Pakistan - England finally got get their hands on their first ICC Men's trophy when they beat Australia convincingly by seven wickets with three overs to spare.

They came within touching distance of repeating the feat in 2016 but a Carlos Brathwaite special in the Final meant that they had to settle for runners-up.

Look out for
Tymal Mills

When England announced their squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the inclusion of Tymal Mills was one that few saw coming. With Archer ruled out due to injury and Stokes on an indefinite break to focus on his mental health, England decided to call upon the services of Mills, who has played all of five T20Is, the last of which was four years ago in 2017.

Away from the international scene, Mills has been wreaking havoc in the domestic T20 tournaments, most recently in the T20 Blast and The Hundred.

In the Blast, he finished as Sussex’s highest wicket-taker with 17 in nine games at an average of 14.11 and an economy of 8. In The Hundred, he played a pivotal role in Southern Brave lifting the trophy, finishing with eight wickets in 10 games at an excellent economy of 6.67.

“Tymal Mills deserves his inclusion and has demonstrated over the past couple of years, but particularly this summer that he has all skills to succeed at this level,” said Silverwood, England’s head coach.

“His exceptional pace is a standout, and the way he has spearheaded Sussex and Southern Brave’s respective attacks in the short-form game has shown that he relishes the pressures of the big stage. He will add variety to our bowling unit, and we can’t wait to see him play in a major international tournament.”

With a whole bag of tricks up his sleeve, Mills could well be England’s x-factor at the T20 World Cup in Oman and UAE.

Key Player

Jos Buttler

Buttler is considered one of the best finishers in the world in the limited-overs formats, so when England decided to move him up the order after his opening exploits in franchise cricket there were a few eyebrows raised.

Three years since that decision, Buttler has gone on to become one of the best T20I openers around and has even bettered his numbers as a batter, averaging 47.17 at a strike rate of 147.97, compared to his 23.71 and 133.33 batting in the middle-order. Nine of his 14 T20I fifties have come up the order. During the same period, no other opener in the world who has played at least 20 innings has averaged as much as Buttler in T20Is.

Having played a key role as a batter and keeper in the 2019 World Cup triumph, England will be hoping that their vice-captain will again rise to the occasion in the UAE in their bid for undisputed limited-overs domination.

Big match
Australia - 30 October

Irrespective of the format, when the two Ashes rivals clash, there’s always a big game feel to it and there’s no bigger stage than the World Cup. Pitted in Group 1 of the Super 12 stage, England and Australia will clash on 30 October in Dubai.

England and Australia have clashed only twice previously in Men’s T20 World Cup. In 2007, Australia got the better of England while in 2010, England emerged victorious when it mattered the most in the decider.

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021

CHARLOTTE EDWARDS: ENGLAND MUST GO BOWLER-HEAVY TO HAVE BEST CHANCE

It has been a great start to the tournament and I’m looking forward to the Super 12 games getting underway on Saturday with England playing the West Indies in a repeat of the Men’s ICC T20 World Cup 2016 Final.

It is going to be an exciting game, the T20 format generally brings all the teams closer together and the West Indies have had a good record in recent years in the World Cups, so it’s going to be a tough start for England.

But coming off the back of a win against New Zealand in the warm-up game they will be pretty confident going into this competition.

They’ve got lots of high-quality players which can sometimes make selection very difficult but I think bowlers win World Cups and T20 games so the depth will need to be in the bowling.

It’s disappointing England have lost a few key players going into the tournament, like Sam Curran, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes, but the likes of David Willey and Tymal Mills, who is a real point of difference, have performed well.

I think they need to go with the extra bowling option and that means one of the batters missing out which is a tough call on someone with maybe Dawid Malan missing out.

As a captain sometimes you have to have those difficult conversations for the benefit of the team, and you have to go on conditions - if this tournament was in Australia, for example, the makeup of the team would be different.

It’s horses for courses in tournaments like this and England have some really dynamic players who have been in form in the IPL.

Eoin Morgan’s form has not been particularly great of late but for me he is a guaranteed starter with his contribution as captain and the runs he has previously scored.

I wouldn’t bet against him, I think he’ll have a good tournament, sometimes it’s not a bad thing going in without too many runs because he’s too good a player not to come good at some point.

I know Morgan has said he would drop himself from the team if it was the right thing to do and that is a huge statement. It just shows that he has got the team’s performances at heart.

He knows if he’s not playing well enough, he will be prepared and has faith in someone like Jos Buttler who would take over.

But I think England are a stronger team with Morgan and you can see how much the boys enjoy playing under him, he’s a big match and big tournament player. It just shows what a team person he is, he’s not too proud to say that.

I never found myself in that position, but I think I would feel exactly the same. If you are not playing well, you are desperate for the team to do well and because it’s a short tournament you know how important it is to get up and running early doors, but I think he will be absolutely fine.

I think England will be up there with any of the major teams, it is such a wide-open tournament, there’s some brilliant teams but I’m sure England will be one of the teams that others are looking at.

They have world class players and people like Liam Livingstone have come in and he’s an absolute X-Factor player and that shows the depth of the white-ball side, something they have prided themselves on in the last few years.

The growth of England’s white-ball cricket has been incredible since that World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and how they turned things around to become one of the most feared teams in the format, obviously winning the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 at Lord’s.

There’s lots of players pushing for positions in this team, which is really exciting and I think they are a really exciting team to watch.

I was there in 2019 and I’ll be glued to the TV watching them now as they are certainly a team you want to tune in and watch.

Bowling isn’t very good. How does Chris Jordan keep getting selected? Mediocre bowler.

Mills has looked very impressive so far - he gives England's bowling the X factor and has the ability to take wickets in batches.

They look a very strong side and possibly the team to beat.

And England have qualified for the Semi-Finals of the T20 World Cup

Mills out of the tournament.

And now Jason Roy looks like he's out of the tournament too.

England name injured star's replacement after fears confirmed

England have confirmed star opener Jason Roy is out for the remainder of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 after suffering a calf injury.
Roy has been replaced in England’s squad for the rest of their campaign by James Vince, following approval by the tournament’s Event Technical Committee.

England captain Eoin Morgan feared the worst after Roy went down during England's final Super 12 match against South Africa and the opener has now been ruled out of the tournament.

Vince, who has played 12 T20Is and boasts one ODI century, was with the group as a travelling reserve.Roy’s injury is the second major blow England has suffered during their campaign, with fast bowler Tymal Mills going down with a thigh injury last week. Mills was replaced by Reece Topley.

Roy’s presence at the top of the order will be missed by Eoin Morgan’s side, with the star opener boasting an average of 25.30 and strike rate of 144.93 in the format.

"He's unbelievably important," Morgan said after England's loss to South Africa. "He's a guy who epitomises everything that we are about in the changing room and the way we play.

"You see how commanding he is at the top of the order… he's as close as we get to surmising how the changing room should play."

Despite their recent injuries, England finished on top of their Super 12 group and take on New Zealand in the tournament’s first semi-final on Wednesday.
