I thought if they batted sensibly not being overly aggressive which seemed to be the case,

You don't watch our lot bat much do you?

If we were going to somehow get the runs it would have been somebody like warner slogging a quickfire 150 or so, we don't grind out wins.

There is a difference between reckless and being aggressive, sadly Aussies employed the former strategy which doesn't work out in laborious 350+ chases. You've approach it with a calm head and once the target is in sight, then you can step on gas if wickets are in hand much like what Pakistan did in SL.

Australia can only play one way.

People got the wrong idea about the great Australian team.

The great Australian team won a lot and was very aggressive. The aggressiveness was something they could do because they were a better team and worked to put themselves in that position.

The modern thinkers around the team are confused and mistake the aggression as the sole reason for the success.

Sure it's what seperated that Australian side from the modern South African side but we're not at South Africa's level at the moment and we'd be better served trying to reach that level before trying to bat like Ponting and Hayden and Gilchrist

Match was there for the taking and Johnson proved it later in the day how easy it was batting on this road but unfortunately Aussie top and middle order didn't capitalized on the opportunity losing their wickets regularly to part timers in ugly fashion. I thought if they batted sensibly not being overly aggressive which seemed to be the case, 400 was easily chaseable batting normally for 4 sessions on this super flat phatta road but sadly that didn't seem to be the case. Pretty sure Aussies will bounce back at Lords by crushing Englishmen and show them their true place.

You're very obviously reluctant to give England any credit.

Don't expect any change from our lot this series either, boof has already come out and said we will be trying to slog ali out of the attack again.

Nobody in power for out lot thinks we did anything wrong with the approach just that it unluckily didn't work this particular time, when it finally does come off in these sorts of conditions they will simply pat themselves on the back and point to the aggression being the key.

You would look more credible if you accept that you misread the situation.

It wasn't a road after day one. It deteriorated each day. Look at how each innings score was lower than the one before. England won because they pitched the ball up and let the wicket do the work, and held crucial catches.

400 has been chased down just four times in test history which shows you how hard it is.

All eyes turn to Lords where England beat New Zealand 5 weeks ago on an Emerald Green wicket.

I have thought that England will win the Ashes for months and of course more confident now after Cardiff. The Aussies are a poor ageing team. Harris is a huge loss - a Mcgrath stepping on a ball moment. Their batting is brittle with over reliance on Warner, Clarke & Smith. No one else can make the big hundreds required to win games. The bowling is their strength but Johnson is erratic outside of Australia and Starc struggles with the physical demands of test cricket.

The worry for Australia is that they will remain a poor side for a few years given the lack of young talent coming through.

As for Cardiff - they were never going to get close to 411. Johnson didn't make the pitch look easy - just a chance to score some easy runs when the game was dead and the field up.

300 was around the maximum they could have chased successfully. For that they need a Warner quickfire 80 or 100.

Maybe 300 but even that would have been too much. I suspect that 250 would have been evens.

"Aussies will win this easily, bet your house on it. 400 is a piece of cake"

*Aussies fail to score 250*

"Yeah well, if they scored 400 runs then they'd have scored 400 so I was right all along"

What a joke poster.

I thought 250 all out was most likely - even 300 was an ask on that deck against some pretty good quickish bowling, well handled by the vastly improved skipper Chef.

250-280 would have been a great chase and we would have had at least some chance of making it but for that to be realistic we had to score the 400 at the time it was actually a possibility and that was the first dig, numbers 3 through 6 all getting to 30 and then throwing it away cost us any chance of staying in the match.
