Captain Eoin Morgan will not try to prevent England fans booing Australia pair Steve Smith and David Warner during the World Cup match at Lord's on Tuesday.

Smith and Warner have been received with hostility since returning from one-year ball-tampering bans, but India skipper Virat Kohli asked their fans not to jeer Smith when they met earlier in the tournament.

"Regaining trust takes a lot of time. Who knows how long it will take?" Morgan told BBC Sport.

"I don't think I could do anything, or should do anything, to try to influence the fans to change their minds."

Speaking on Monday, Morgan added: "Sport is beautiful in many ways, but cricket is the romantic sport of all sports.

"I would never use the position I'm in to influence fans or try to change the game in some way.

Well said by Morgan. Fans pay good money to attend matches, they can boo anyone they like and others can cheer for anyone they like.

I also read the Barmy Army have some great new songs for the Aussie duo when the Ashes are in play. How will Smith And Warner handle this summer? :smith:warner

I love how the Aussies are crying now. Remember when Darren Lehmann appealed to the Aussie supporters to make Stuart Broad cry because he was accused of cheating? Now we have Aussie players who did cheat and they want the red carpet treatment!

At the moment Morgan would be better served to think about what he might do when the English fans boo him. As things stand the arrogant English need to beat India, Australia and New Zealand to guarantee qualification. Something they haven't done in 27 years.

Perhaps the time is ripe to think of suitable excuses such as we got a dead, used pitch or maybe there were too many fans of the opposition in the ground.

Warner and Smith are scoring runs for fun. They might very well be able to shut up the crowd with a win. One more loss England will be out. Both Hussain and Vaughan are particular about avoiding India in the semis.

I dont feel sorry for those Aussies or the team. For far too long they have shown arrogance and chirpped like canaries on the field, destroying the notion of a gentlemans game. Kohli wanted to be the paece maker but imo this was only for his personal image and also because both are his IPL mates. There is a different mentality in England, Aussies arent spared at the best of times but this summer will be something else.

Imagine what morgan said this same statement to Kohli.
India just make this overrated team as C grade team.

Really look forward to the Ashes this summer!

I think the crowds will be harsh on both players. But they will get on with their jobs. Smith and Warner have never asked for any sympathy to be fair.

It will be spectacular if they get kicked out after their year long chest thumping of how they came up with ingenious plan of loading the side with big hitters with ‘keep going’ attitude. And in the process putting down other teams. Then they realized their bowling sucked balls and they decided poach a West Indian speedster and gave him a nick name Speed Demon.

Who cares? Smith and Warner didn't complain.

Will probably backfire on England like when they made songs having a go at Mitchell Johnson's wife and mother and he responded by humiliating them.

Very true, the boos could very well have a reverse effect if any, but this is not the point, the point is how Langer pleaded with the public on not to boo Smith and Warner and to take it easy on them!

Coach trys to protect his players. Shock horror.

Lol you taking them too lightly they usually flop against low level teams they will wreck Australia like never before easy win for the poms

The hypocrisy in Aussie players caught cheating and Aussie coach in inciting the Australian crowd to to make Broad cry, this was the shock and horror felt by Australian fans! The current coach trying to protect his players is just proof that bullies by nature are actually weak inside.

hahaha

Fair points being made here and I think Morgan has been a sore loser and very arrogant at times but I have always nejoyedh is cold honesty in such matters and he is spot on. The Aussie duo deserve every bit of abuse they receive at the hands of fans, as long as it is not racial or physical.

Morgan is not a likeable fellow!
Jos buttler is much more likeable and in my opinion , make a better captain!

At the end of the day, cricket is going to be the only thing to be talked about. The boos will not matter.

Not even news. Morgan nay theka liya hua hai for Aussie players? Is he their PR agent? He's already under pressure from English fans to win this cup after 2 big blunders vs Pak and SL. If he loses against Aussies and Indians, things will look dire. At least one of them will beat this feeble minded England team.

They already faced their punishment. A one year suspension is more than enough. How many matches did Faf miss and how many people booed him?

Do you actually follow cricket or just watch highlights?

The reason why Smith and Warner are booed is because Australia projected this false image that they play fair but hard. Not only this, they spent decades making a career out of sledging, and turned it into an art. Turns out that Australians not only cheated but cannot take the same medicine they dished out over the years. It was their Holier-than-thou attitude that has gotten them to this stage.

Smith and Warner are cheaters and have never been likable. I hope the English fans mentally break them.

Only one who seems to be so hot and bothered by this is you.

I'm fact I recall the English crying about broad getting booed and bairstow get sledged.

Ahh yes that infamous Bairstow sledge where Bancroft made a comment on Bairstow's late father. Hard but fair play according to the Aussies. Bancroft, names rings a bell!

Not bothered at all, in fact I am relishing the thought of Aussies getting a taste of their medicine, made sweeter by the fact Langer is pleading with the fans to go easy on the 2.

Smith and Warner deserve everything they get from the English fans, including Oscars for their performance when giving statements.

:)

Ricky Ponting says Steve Smith and David Warner will be ready for a hostile reception from the crowd and are keen to regain the respect of the public as Australia take on England at Lord's on Tuesday.

The pair returned to the Australia side in time for the World Cup after serving 12-month bans for their part in the ball-tampering scandal and were booed during the warm-up game against England last month.

Ponting is expecting the hostility to be ramped up an extra notch when the sides meet in a competitive World Cup match and, having been on the receiving of his fair share of stick from England fans over the years, says he has spoken to Smith and Warner about what to expect.

"I think they should be [prepared for the hostile atmosphere], they've had a long time to think about it," Ponting told Sky Sports.

"We've had bits and pieces of that anyway through some of the practice games where there was that bit of negativity towards them. They'll be ready for it and we know one thing, if they're keeping the crowd quiet tomorrow then they're playing well.

"I've spoken to them already, they know what they're going to be confronted with tomorrow. It's going to be a hostile environment out there in front of the English fans and the English cricket team.

"That's the other thing, this England team is a very good team that will be smarting after a loss the other day so they'll want to bounce back and they won't want to make life easy for Warner or Smith out in the middle either."

Ponting was speaking to former England captain and Sky Sports pundit Nasser Hussain and says he can understand why the crowd would boo Smith and Warner.

"I do but I don't think these two boys are the only two boys who have ever tampered with a cricket ball.

"Even in this country there's been a few guys that when some of those players went back onto the field, they weren't booed. Everybody understands it and those boys are not proud of what's happened.

"They've served their penalty and yes, they'll get some negativity tomorrow but they'll expect it as well."

The former Australia skipper acknowledges that the culture of the team had needed to change after the ball-tampering incident in South Africa but believes that Justin Langer has addressed that since taking over as head coach following the scandal.

Ponting insists that Australia will still play hard but fair cricket and the key for a player like Warner is enabling to channel his aggression and competitiveness in the right way.

"I think it's about him harnessing his aggression. Making sure his aggression comes when he's got his bat in his hand and making sure that he is as involved in the contest as he can be.

"We know that he is a very competitive young man and that is the reason why some of these things just sometimes overflow a little bit, or have in the past. But you can't take that away.

"I think the reason he's had the success that he's had is because of that attitude that he's got as well. He is a born winner."

Smith, meanwhile, was stripped of the captaincy but what will have hurt both him and Warner more, Ponting argues, is losing the respect of the public.

"The money and being out of the Australian team, that's one thing, but when you're playing a game where you're trying to please the public all of the time, when you lose their respect that's the hardest thing to get back.

"That's why I think it was really important for Smith and Warner to make the most of that time away and learn about themselves so that when they came back to play international cricket again, they were ready to play bloody well - that's the way they get the respect back and then they'll start feeling better about themselves."

Desis and Cricket fans are too sensitive, y'all wouldn't survive in the NBA, NHL, or NFL or in even European football.

I feel they got their due when they served 1 year ban. The fans boo all they want to say but I think Warner and Smith are two mentally strong players and it will make them more determined. England also have bigger things to worry about given how Bangladesh and Pakistan have been playing.

I don’t. We just thought Lehmann was a bit silly for his Broad comment.

Lastly, re the fans at Lords & booing Smith and Warner. I don’t like any players being booed in any sport, but if the fans who pay their $$ want to, then they are entitled too - go for it. But do it at your own peril as I know this will not effect them - but could inspire !!!!!!
— Shane Warne (@ShaneWarne) June 25, 2019

Fair comments from Morgan.

Some good stuff from him for a change.

LONDON (Reuters) - David Warner says he’s living the dream playing for Australia at the World Cup and no amount of booing from England fans eager to remind him of his one-year ban for ball tampering is going to spoil his mood.

The left-handed batsman shared an opening stand of 123 with his captain Aaron Finch as the defending champions beat hosts and pre-tournament favourites England at Lord’s on Tuesday to book a place in the semi-finals.

It was Warner’s seventh match for Australia after returning from the ban for his part in the Newlands scandal and his innings of 53 runs took his tournament tally to 500 at an average of 83.33.

There were boos for Warner and his former captain Steve Smith when they took the field but the 32-year-old from the tough southeastern Sydney suburbs was not letting it bother him.

“At the end of the day. People have the right to come in here, they pay their dollars and if they want to boo us, they can,” Warner told reporters at Lord’s.

“As I said before, I thrive on that stuff, I love it. I went out to the corner there... and copped it.

“At the end of the day you have to smile — they pay their money to come and watch us and we are grateful for them to come and sit down and watch us.

“I always just smile. I take my glasses off and look everyone in the eye and just smile.

“That is what it’s about, I am living the dream, I am out here at Lord’s, playing cricket for my country.”

Warner said 12 months out of international cricket and returning to his Randwick-Petersham club had effected a change in his outlook on his sport.

“For me it is about enjoying the game,” he said. “When it is taken away from you, you realise what it is all about. Going back to grassroots was fantastic.

“I really saw smiles on people’s faces to be out there on a Saturday afternoon, all the volunteers that come down and put time and effort in, whether it is making the drinks, making the lunches.

“People’s parents, my mum, my dad coming down, it is just great. You can’t take that for granted. I am just grateful for the second opportunity to come back here and represent my country and do the country proud.

“You know I am just excited to be back here and playing World Cup cricket for Australia.”

Australia’s next match is back at Lord’s on Saturday against New Zealand, who they beat in the final to win the 2015 World Cup.

England fans seem to enjoy making clowns of themselves. I mean, booing Steve Smith even when he gets his second hundred during the 1st Ashes test. At some point don't you feel it's stupid to be taking the moral high ground when you yourself have such a checkered history (sticking just to cricket).

A few times during the WC made the point. But to drag it out suggests some laughable ego. How much more must he batter you before you realize everyone else is laughing at you.

Loving the Aussie comeback :)))

Booing is all part of the drama, England fans love a pantomime villain, deep down they definitely respect smith.

This has not aged well.

It’s not “England fans” booing, it’s a few English nationalist idiots.

They have actually identified the people booing?.

That is really good work by the ECB to monitor and identify who is doing the booing and find out if they are "England fans" or "English nationalist idiots". I assume it was the ECB that informed you who these people are?.

Morgan is right.

Fans pay money to watch and they can do whatever they want (as long as it is not illegal).

Players need to develop thick skins.

Or not do daft things whilst playing

Star Australian opener David Warner felt “bizzare” playing in front of empty stands during the first T20 International but he is not complaining as it was the first time he was not “abused” by hostile English crowd.

Warner was at the receiving end of repeated crowd jeering during the World Cup in England last year following his role in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. He got the same treatment in the subsequent Ashes series.

But there was none like that on Friday during the first T20 match which Australia lost by two runs as there were no fans present at the Ageas Bowl. It was Australia’s first competitive match in nearly six months.

“It was the first time I’ve been here (England) and not got abuse. It was quite nice!,” Warner said after the match.

Asked if the T20I felt like a game between arch-rivals England and Australia without fans in attendance, he said, “From a crowd perspective, no. It was a bit bizarre.

“You get that up and going (from the crowd). That’s why we love playing home and away. There’s home advantage and away advantage,” the 33-year-old left-handed batsman said.

“But we’re always up for international cricket. We’re just grateful to be back playing and want to make the most of that.”

Warner said there were no excuses to offer for the defeat and his side was outplayed by England.

“Towards the end they (England) bowled exceptionally well, they knocked us over quite comprehensively,” said Warner.

Talking about Australia’s failed chase, he said his side could not rotate strike and hit boundaries in the middle overs. Chasing 163 for a win, Australia could only score 160 for 6 in 20 overs.

“I think we just have to try to be a little bit smarter and work out how we’re going to hit our boundaries,” he said.

“We have to try to keep rotating strike and keep finding the boundary in those middle overs.”

At the World Cup and the Adelaide Test I still booed Smith and Warner when they came in to bat.

I feel entitled to do so after how they corrupted the game. I was in a lift at the Adelaide Oval In 2017-18 with John Emburey, and I gave him a piece of mind for going on the Rebel Tours to South Africa, just as I and most of the rest of the crowd did at Old Trafford circa 1990 when we played Middlesex in the Benson and Hedges Cup.

Why should I forgive Smith just because he is good at batting? I haven’t forgiven Saleem Malik or Azharuddin or Lance Armstrong or the Yorkshire Ripper.

You should forgive smith Because you are a fan of imran Khan,Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram.
All three of them were allegedly ball tamperers and atleast Smith's stats are not helped by ball tampering.
Double standards .
Now before you tell me how tampering with sandpaper is different than using bottle caps ,I don't care whether they used a bottle cap or cut the ball into half with a saw .

There will be some fans in all countries who will boo Smith and Warner. I don't think any captain is going to be able go stop others from booing Smith and Warner.

Good man yerself! He was the only player to go on both tours.

Was that the cup final when Mendis scored a century and Lancs romped home?

Yes, and it must have been the NatWest semi, because I was home from university in London.

Dessie Haynes made a huge century and Middlesex scored nearly 300, which was a huge total. He got stuck right into Wasim Akram, whom he murdered in the Caribbean 18 months later.

It ended up taking 3 days because of the weather, but Mendis - who had similar dodgy proclivities to David Pleat you might recall - saw Lancashire home.

Mandela has been out of jail about 4-5 months - he was released during Gatting’s Rebel Tour of South Africa - and Emburey got the most angry and hateful reception that I have ever seen at a cricket match.

I don’t see why I am obliged to forgive people just because they are good at cricket.
