"Even if there were 10 PSL teams now, all of them would be sold due to the high demand": Najam Sethi

Najam Sethi in an interview:

"PSL can't take place without the franchises. Franchises and PCB should be on the same page whenever there is an issue. If there are any disagreements, the brand will be affected. To be on the same page, sometimes the PCB should compromise, while sometimes the franchises should back off. In the larger interest, both should compromise,"

"There is immense pressure to increase the number of teams in PSL, but unfortunately, Ehsan Mani and Ramiz Raja agreed with the franchises that only six teams will play in the next two years. However, it was an eight-team project. We have to convince the franchises to include two more teams. No one will lose anything; if a franchise suffers a loss, the PCB will take responsibility. But there is a high demand to include two more teams, and it will be more successful with many people showing interest in being part of it. Let me tell you, even if there were ten teams now, all of them would be sold due to the high demand."

Would love to know the crack he is smoking, you can't add anymore teams without a significantly improved broadcast deal and we are talking about atleast $100-150 million atleast which the Pakistani economy is incapable of providing.

I doubt the existing franchises will allow any new franchises given that they were the ones who took the risk when the leagues prospects, viability were uncertain and they will want to fully encash their profits before they allow others to enjoy any profits.

The other question mark is that ten teams means a longer window, will the ICC be kind enough to grant this window? Can the PCB avoid clashing with CSA T20 league, UAE T20 League, BPL, Big Bash?

With the addition of 2 teams, you will see an increase of schedule and also a loss in terms of quality of cricket. Also international players might not want to play and stay in Pakistan for a period that is over one month and teams will struggle to get international players due to their national team commitments. Adding one extra team might be reasonable but two teams seem to be overkill.

Regarding the scheduling, they could easily play 3 games in a day at 3 different venues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Game 1 should start around 12pm till 3:30pm

Game 2 should start around 4pm till 7:30pm

And, Game 3 should start around 8pm till 11:30pm

It may sound late finishing at 11:30, but I’m pretty sure some of the games finished after midnight.

The only problem would be getting the games to finish on time, you can’t be bowling your 12th over after 1 hour with 8 overs coming from spin.

10 teams won't work.

We can barely sell out stadiums for the teams we currently have.

I think 8 teams could work but would prefer their to be two divisions. Both are randomly drawn and they aren't like a division 1 or division 2.

Each division can play simultaneously in different stadiums.

Top 4 can go into a super 4 and carry over points against the team in the same division.

Top 2 from the super 4 goes into the final.

Seems Zaka Ashraf and Co don't agree with this either.
