Police have said they are growing increasingly concerned for the former footballer Clarke Carlisle after he was reported missing.

The ex-Burnley and Leeds player was last seen by his family in Preston on Thursday afternoon, Lancashire police said.

His wife, Carrie Carlisle, said he may have been in Manchester city centre on Friday morning, and she appealed for information about his whereabouts.

Carlisle, 37, is a former chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association and made more than 500 appearances for nine clubs during his playing career from 1997 to 2013. He has a history of mental illness.

He told the Guardian last year about how he was attempting to turn his life around after he tried to kill himself in 2014 when he stepped in front of a lorry. He said he “should be dead” and felt blessed to have survived.

In a statement posted online last year, he said: “Two years ago today I jumped in front of a truck. One year today I was back in psychiatric hospital. Today I’m away with the love of my life.”

Carlisle was last seen wearing a black zip-up jacket, black T-shirt, blue jeans and Nike trainers, police said. He is 6ft 4ins, of slim build and has tattoos on his arms.

He was last seen on the Flag Market in Preston at about 2.30pm on Thursday.

DCI Steve Holgate, of Lancashire police, said: “We are extremely concerned about Clarke and we would urge anyone who sees him or knows where he is to get in touch with us. We would also appeal directly to Clarke himself to contact us if he sees this appeal to let us know he is safe.”

Carlisle founded a mental health charity, the Clarke Carlisle Foundation for Dual Diagnosis – a condition that has been described as “mental health problems co-occurring with drug or alcohol misuse”.

He is due to host a mental health awareness evening in Birmingham next week in memory of Nick Mowl, a former Solihull Moors player who killed himself this year.

I hope he's found safe and sound however I have mixed feelings over Clarke Carlisle - sure he suffers from a mental illness however unless you are completely insane you should still be responsible for your actions even when ill.

For example, he has been caught drink driving numerous times and he blames his depression for it - I have very little sympathy for drink drivers. Moreover, when he tried to kill himself a few years ago he didn't just attempt to do so by himself (ie hanging, jumping off a building/bridge, overdosing etc) but he jumped in front of a lorry on a busy road and scarred (mentally) the lorry driver for life. Also, this is what happened to another person who witnessed his suicide attempt.

Clarke Carlisle found 'safe and well' in Liverpool after ex-Premier League star was reported missing

Former QPR and Leeds United defender Clarke Carlisle has been found 'safe and well' after he was reported missing by his family earlier on Friday.

A tweet from Preston Police confirmed that he has been found in Liverpool.

"Great news folks," the tweet read. "Clarke Carlisle has been found safe in Liverpool. Thanks to everyone who shared our appeal. Have a good weekend."

His wife Carrie, who is six months pregnant with the couple's first child also took to Twitter to share the news and express her gratitude to those that shared her earlier messages.

"Clarke has been found," she wrote. "Due to you all who have so kindly looked for him and shared he was missing. We all owe you a debt of gratitude."

Concerns had grown over his whereabouts earlier on Friday after he was last seen in Manchester city centre at 6am this morning.

The 37-year-old made more than 500 appearances for nine clubs during his playing career.

Carrie had earlier tweeted: "#Missing Clarke's last known whereabouts was Manchester City Centre at 6am. If you see him please get in touch."

A statement from Lancashire Police read: "We are growing increasingly concerned after former footballer Clarke Carlisle went missing."

But Preston Police's tweet has now happily confirmed he is safe.

Carlisle has a history of mental illness and in 2014 he tried to kill himself when he stepped in front of 12-ton truck but survived despite suffering horrific injuries.

Following the incident his relationship with wife Gemma broke down and a witness of the collision, Chris Kilbride, died just over six months later.

At the time of the incident Mr Kilbride was driving a van along the busy A64 in Yorkshire and swerved to avoid the lorry and phoned 999.

Carlisle spent six weeks in a psychiatric unit following the incident.

But he appeared to be on the road to recovery last year when he wrote an online statement which read: "Two years ago today, I jumped in front of a truck. One year today, I was back in psychiatric hospital. Today, I’m away with the love of my life."

Carlisle hit the headlines in 2011 when he became the first footballer to appear on Question Time and was dubbed 'Britain's brainiest footballer'.

The defender spent five years with Burnley and also played for Queens Park Rangers and Leeds.

He retired in 2013 before taking up a role at the PFA where he was eventually named chairman.

Through his foundation, he is due to host a mental health awareness evening in Birmingham next week.

The event is being held in memory of ex-Solihull Moors player Nick Mowl who took his own life earlier this year.

Carlisle is scheduled to be a guest speaker at the event next Thursday.
