Cape Town - Former Zimbabwean cricketers Brendan Taylor and Mark Vermeulen were involved in a social media spat over the current national side's dismal performances against Afghanistan.

On Sunday, Zimbabwe were bowled out for a paltry 54 in 13.5 overs after attempting to chase down 253 in the fifth and final ODI in Harare - as the visitors sealed a 106-run victory (on the D/L Method) and clinched the series 3-2.

After the series loss, former star batsman Taylor took to Facebook to defend Zimbabwe's performance and criticised former players and commentators by explaining that they sometimes "forget how tough it can be in the middle".

However, his former team-mate Vermeulen was less complimentary and replied to Taylor's post saying that he was disappointed in Taylor for supporting a "pathetic effort by our national team".

"If I was in the team that was bowled out for 54 I would be embarrassed and would just shut the **** up and get in the nets," commented Vermeulen.

Taylor in turn replied to Vermeulen's post, writing, "I'm sure the guys are first to admit this was a poor performance... But it's **** from you who majority of the time sit back and criticise the players, Zimbabwean Cricket and the country as a whole.

"Take a good look in the mirror on what you have done for yourself and your country, apart from burning down one of the few establishments we had along with the poor development players that lost everything in their bags that day. Didn't hear any apologies from you, have we Rex? You my friend are what a true embarrassment looks like."

Vermeulen then replied: "They all got what they deserved and let me catch you one day... we'll settle this... be careful what you say about me, you little ****."

Taylor then shared the argument between the two on Twitter calling Vermeulen a psycho:"Unfortunately @ZimCricketv did produce the most psycho player ever to grace the game. Definitely got a kill in him does Mark."

Vermeulen is sadly better known for his controversial behaviour off the field than on it, after he escaped a conviction for arson in 2008 because of mental illness after setting fire to two Zimbabwe cricket buildings.

He was banned from playing in English league cricket for 10 years in 2011 for hurling the ball at a group of fans after they teased him.

The court found Vermeulen had been suffering from serious psychiatric problems since he was struck on the head by a ball while batting in a match in 2004.

Vermeulen played nine Tests and appeared in 43 ODIs for Zimbabwe.

Taylor, who retired in 2015, played 167 ODIs and 23 Tests for the national team.

Brendon taylor was one of the best Zimbabwean cricketer by far, his support for his team shows his class! on the other hand that other guy 'Mark Vermeulen' is someone I've never heard of; someone who can't back up his statement.

So Mark is actually having some problems;

Never followed Zimbabwean cricket too closely until its a world cup or something, rather glad that Cricket is still alive there but have to credit Afghan cricketers, they've proved their spot in the International Arena and are definitely better than many teams including Ireland.

Is the conversation for real ? Lol, its hilarious and kind of self creates like fake fb walls.

Its like what you would expect from two strangers throwing mud at each other on random facebook pages, not by two
International Cricketers.

a blow from Irfan pathan finished it for him!

Mark Vermeulen's life and career changed forever on January 20, 2004, when he was struck a sickening blow on the head by Irfan Pathan during Zimbabwe's VB Series campaign in Australia. Two-and-a-half erratic years later, in October 2006, he was arrested after setting fire to the offices of the Harare Sports Club and the National Academy, but was cleared at his subsequent trial in January 2008, on the grounds that he had been suffering psychiatric problems, including partial complex epilepsy, ever since the injury. That seemed to signal the end of his career, but he refused to accept that and his perseverance was rewarded in 2009 when the Zimbabwe board agreed to offer him another chance.

Vermeulen: "Let me catch you one day" :))

I think Vermeulen is a bit nuts. He's have incidents like this before and is banned as well by Zim cricket board.

Btw his statement that Zim was bowled out for 54 against a team without top 40 bowlers i wrong as well.
Just checked the rankings.

Nabi is ranked nr. 2 allrounder and nr.10 bowler
Hamza is ranked 32
Dowlat is ranked 36
And Rashid just outside 42.

oops, that was a nasty one.

He got some mental illness after that and caused a lot of chaos off the field.

A few years ago he posted the comments below on Facebook talking about his black teammates. The guy clearly has some major issues.

Haaaaaa a a a!!!!!!!!!! If we had left them in the bush and never educated them prosper wouldn’t be having these problems because he would be living happily in his mud hut eating ground up maize so of course it’s our fault every single problem a black has is because of white people that’s why racism is only able to work one way because we basically fxxxd up the apes’ lives.”

Vermeulen has my sympathy too...poor guy has had mental issues after the Pathan bouncer incident. he has also spent a couple of years in psych hospitals...lit a building on fire...suicidal attempts... has been wierd mentally ever since. just sad how one ball changed his life forever.

The comments he made regarding the Prosper Utseya situation are revolting and leave Vermeulen with no credibility at all.

You don't suddenly become a racist when you are hit on the head by a bouncer

Vermeulen is the son of an extremely right wing father. His racism stems from his upbringing

A bouncer made him racist? The suicidal thoughts yes maybe but no way can someone become racist because of a bouncer.
