Came across this review of a new show on Netflix and was surprised to see that these high rollers only speak in English at home and in company.

'Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives': Fans slam show after 'super fake accents' hurt their ears

ans couldn't help but notice how these wives spoke to each other with very strange accents. While Neelam's accent can be attributed to her upbrining abroad, the bizarre accents of the other housewives made no sense. Fans also began wondering why these hosuewives weren't speaking Hindi with each other, or even their children, and were insisting only on speaking in Engluish.

In one of the episodes, we see Maheep meeting her nephew/ Bollywood celebrity- Arjun Kapoor, along with her son Jahan. During their conversation, Arjun looks at Jahan and asks what he wants to be when he grows up, Jahan replies actor. Arjun then asks him if he is aware that he needs to be able to communicate Hindi fluently in order to become an actor. Maheep intervenes and assures Arjun that Jahan has started learning to speak Hindi and will master it in few years. ( :))) )

Well ok, I admit I'm not that surprised, it's part of what makes India such a lip smacking market for us, but has anybody actually watched the show? Is this part of the reason for the rise of Hindutva, to preserve the hindu culture?

I watched 5 mins and the switched to a different program

All the bits I hate about Bollywood in it

I think this is going to be a problem for this topic. Even I only heard about this from a female family member who couldn't stop laughing about the wannabe bollywood wives, can't imagine many posters on here will watch it. Well Indians might but they'll be diving for cover as soon as they see the thread near the top of the board.

They seem to be like so many of these so called celeb wives. Irritating, ignorant and annoying.

Pretty much like many cricketer's wives.

Man those accents though ....

The wife and I are always searching for "nothing" type shows for late night. where you don't have to think too much and can pass a bit of time with a few laughs. This couldn't even pass that threshold!

Watched 15 minutes and that was enough for me.

What vile, disgusting and annoying people.

Any tv show that has “wives” in it is going to be full of crap.

What were people expecting?

I was just surprised that these women are bringing up kids who can't even speak their own language. This is just what I heard, still haven't watched even one minute of the show. I suppose I should really just to offer first hand views but I was expecting more Indian poster input which would have offered some perspective.

Well, speaking in English is considered as an indicator of knowledge and class in sub-continent thanks to the British.

I don't think that applies to Pakistan, over there it seems to be upmarket you have to talk to your kids in Urdu even if your own tongue is different. We have seen threads on here in the past where people have (rightly) criticised the trend for Punjabi parents to do this thereby losing their own dialect.

For Indians it would appear English is the class indicator going by this show. We British have certainly left a mark over there, and to be fair, it will stand Indians in good stead career wise to speak the language.

Lol saw a Pakistani-American mocking their accents on Tiktok. Apparently they speak with a "Bombay" accent, it's one of the cringiest accents I've ever heard. I think it'd be better if Indian actors stuck with Hindi or Marathi or whatever it is they speak in Mumbai.

Many affluent families in Dhaka and Chittagong take pride in the fact that their children cant speak fluent bangla & can only speak in English. English is THE class indicator in Bangladesh as well, which is ironic considering Bangladesh is one of the very few nations to have shed blood to speak in their own mother tongue!

What language do Pakistani elites speak? I have seen threads here lamenting poor English skills of Pak cricketers so I don't think Pakistanis are free from that prejudice.
And yes, “You” British has definitely let a mark in sub-continent after ruling it for two centuries.

I think it’s a bit of a mid characterization. Pakistan is not much different in theory but you don’t see the unabashed common usage of English there like India. The elites I am afraid aren’t any different in that regard. Maybe tora buhat fark ho, but we are also mental slaves to the English I am afraid.

English is a great language to have in your locker to be fair, just I don't think it should be your primary language unless you actually live in England or one of their satellite nations like US or Australia.

I do find it strange that most Indians despise the British but are happy to speak their language.

Never mind the wives, in the short bits that I saw, the most annoying person in it was Sanjay Kapoor.

Didn't a cleaning company blatantly say they had to stop service to bollywood homes due to their snobbish behaviour ? Why is everyone surprised.

India has more languages than Pakistan and English kinda acts the common communication medium especially down South. But middle-class Indians still talks to their regional peers in their mother tongue.

Well, if you want to avoid everything related to Brits, we have to stop doing lot of things including our food. We even owe our Chai to them.

I wouldn't say they despise the Brits, rather just have some inferiority complex which is understandable given Brits ruled their lands for 200 years. Perhaps speaking English is a way of marking you out as a person of higher education and that is why it is seen as cool to engage in the language even at home.

I would say UK is the satellite nation of US considering how they have to spend their resources and young men to fight American wars and then get refugees in return.
