Faheem Ashraf to be rested for remainder of the ODI series against Australia

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Faheem Ashraf will take no further part in the series against Australia following Sunday’s ODI and will return to Pakistan on Monday.

The decision has been made by the national selection committee in consultation with the team management, and is consistent to their policy of giving sufficient rest to their frontline players ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which will be played in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July.

Faheem, who scored 28 and took one for 50 in the series opener in Sharjah on Friday, has played a Test, eight ODIs and eight T20I since September 2018.

In the lead up to their World Cup opener against the Windies on 31 May at Trent Bridge, Pakistan has a series against England comprising a T20I and five ODIs. In the build up to the series against England, Pakistan will also play three warm-up matches against Kent (27 April), Northamptonshire (29 April) and Leicestershire (1 May), while two World Cup warm-up matches against Afghanistan (24 May in Bristol) and Bangladesh (26 May in Cardiff) have also been scheduled for Pakistan.

It has also been decided no replacement will be sought for Faheem as the team already includes five fast bowlers in Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Hasnain and Usman Shinwari.

The remaining three ODIs of the series will be played in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on 27, 29 and 31 March, respectively.
 
Weird decision. But if he is going to be rested why not replace him with a specialist spinner?
 
Inzi is such an idiot. He could select Umer Khan/Usama Mir/... but he wants to protect Yasir even if it may cost him 5-0.
 
Probably the only player in history to be “rested” for not performing.
 
Not that he was doing anything good with the bat but Pakistani's tail will officially start from 6 down now.
 
Yeah basically they've seen enough.

Should replace him with a spinner though.

Pakistan are giving a huge leap of faith in Faheem. Whilst his bowling his steady his batting has been underwhelming.

Seems like he will be on the plane to England . I am a fan but this could come to haunt Pakistan .

Is he being rested or protected .
 
I just hope they rest him permanently. But with Pak management, he could be playing the world cup.

I have a feeling they’re protecting him. Because if he had played the 5 Odis, he wouldn’t be playing international anymore after this series. Now, most likely, he will be playing the World Cup.

but he's not good enough to be in the side on bowling alone.
 
Bring in Kashif Bhatti as a replacement fgs . What more the guy need to do to get picked? and we need a wicket taking left arm spinner, it's time to finally select him.

Yasir must also be sent back and bring in a wicket taking leggie in M.Irfan who did extremely well in last years domestic oneday tournament , he has a googly too unlike Yasir.

This series already looks dull and uninspiring so let's make a few changes during the series and test those who have performed in List A instead of wasting this series on the ones who are proven failures in ODIs

Pathetic mediocre player whose offered nothing with bat or ball. So know hes rested? Should be nowhere near world cup squad but he will get picked :facepalm:
 
They aren't resting the players, actually they are protecting the players from getting exposed before the world cup. They have already decided their world cup squad and they won't make any changes no matter what

How can someone in their right mind rest Faheem? The guy bats 10 balls max and bowls 120kmph pies.
 
Firstly he shouldn't be rested but I will come on to that in a second.
Why is he getting so much hate. His bowling is good which he doesn't get any respect for on this forum.
His batting needs to improve a lot and he shouldn't have been rested just because of that.
 
Not sure if the best decision. This was the series to give Faheem chances with the bat.

Later in his spell he was bowling at 86mph. I think he will do well in England. Needs a rest. Has been playing a lot recently .
 
When i heard the news I thought he was probably injured. But now i have come to know that these 2 matches have proved his greatness and he will be a surety in World Cup. :))

National sides of two countries are playing but Pakistan don't mind losing at all. Local clubs have more honor and stakes in a Match than this Pakistan team.
 
As i said earlier i think he has underperformed but he is the best we have.Does imad ..shadab etc deserve a place as allrounders i doubt it
 
I doubt the plan was to play him for 2 ODI's then send him back so he's clearly in some kind of 'red zone' right now. Hopefully his pace will be back for the WC.

What is baffling though is the lack of replacement. If it is possible for the squad to shift Umer Khan should definitely have been brought in, but instead it seems as though Imad's left armers are sufficient given he can bat a bit.

He should be given enough rest and allowed to play in his terms - after all he is the most prized asset of PCT : Fast bowling all-rounder. Also, now he is the main stay of PAK cricket in 3 formats - needs to be protected.
 
The fact that he wasn't replaced proves that Pakistan is really not looking to win but to test other players that are already available. Never been this disappointed at the PCB for awhile now. This attitude toward a series is unacceptable
 
With only one performance in a warm up match against Bangadesh, Fahim Ashraf is getting selected in every format and in every series.

Why not we play a specialist bowler instead of him?
 
They should have let him play as a batsman at 6 in this series. He cannot develop without a proper chance to bat. Razzaq was developed when Wasim played him at number 3 and even as an opener. Not suggesting by any means that he is anywhere near as talented as fauji was but still needs to be given a full series with that bat to develop confidence.

He'll be a walking wicket at number 3, or any higher than number 7. Just doesn't have the game awareness required for an international class batsman.
 
the politics in Pakistan cricket is mind boggling for me :facepalm: Someone in PCB just saved Faheem Ashraf's ODI career by resting him, merit be damned.
 
Hopefully we will see Junaid in the next match.

He will show how to bowl on the flat pitches of UAE.

That is the main point. He is not good enough to be in the team as a bowler . Needs to perform with the bat. Maybe try and play him at number 3 as pinch hitter for a few games

I think they tried that, and he failed - twice.

He's shown that he won't be a contributor with the bat anytime soon
 
Junaid should come in. Batting will be a but bleak though.
 
Rested for what? I am confused what's the tactics of Pakistan are for this series. What bench strength is Pakistan testing? Looking at some of the threads, half of the players playing in the series will not even make it to the WC squad, so what are they being tested for?

It's evident Mickey (along with Inzamam) wants to shut up the media, who come up with random names when things go south for the ODI team. Come to think of that, he is literally challenging everyone from the experts in the mainstream media to the armchair critic on social media.

Eight players in this squad have no hope of making the World Cup. Then your captain comes up in the press conference and says "winning the series is not a priority". This is a massive troll job, and it's frankly insulting to the players selected and the Australian cricket team.
 
Basically, the headline should be: ' Faheem Ashraf The Star All-rounder will return to Pakistan now that he has been selected for WC due to impressive performances throughout his career and the ongoing series where he has helped Pakistan win consecutive matches by scoring 30 odd runs in 2 innings by hitting one majestic six over long on and few fours behind the wicket. Also, his bowling has been top-notch with collective figures of 1-100 not completing his overs on both occasions with an economy of 5+ , now we will try some youngsters in place of him and hope to keep performing the same way'

He hasn't returned, so leave him. Even if he would have, midway through a series where he hasn't performed, I would have said the same thing about him. Faheem shouldn't have been selected for this series if he was so sure a starter for WC, that 2 bad performances have actually sealed his spot. Someone far more deserving like Amir Yamin should have been given a go.
 
Amir Yamin is definately not deserving..Faheem is much better bowler and both their batting is suspect

How can you say that, when Amir Yamin hardly gets a chance to play and has performed with the bat whenever he did get one, unlike Faheem Ashraf who has failed many times.

Amir Yamin is definitely a better batsman than Faheem Ashraf, and their bowling is pretty much similar, Faheem hasn't performed with the ball against any team except for Zimbabwe throughout his career.
 
No mystery this. Pandya was rested for Australia series and since both are competing so is faheem rested for series
 
Another point to [MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION]; called him out when the rest of us were too blind to see.
 
Who rated him? Can't bat or bowl. He has style like Afridi though, let's give him 300 matches.

And my point was similar to Afridi, they bring little to the table.

Afridi wasn't impactful with anything. Nothing player who got 400 matches for one lucky century and who had a two year purple patch.

Anyone who applauds Afridi doesn't like actual cricket.
