If they had to declare tonight with 11 odd overs left, shouldn't they have played at a faster rate after tea? The way they were batting post tea it looked like they would bat for once only and may be try to bat tomorrow's first session as well and post 500+.

It doesn't help when your captain himself is at the crease when it's all happening. Shouldn't he forced Baber and himself to play with more risk if ultimately they were going to declare? I mean it's not like we had our last pair batting. We still had 5 wickets left. This was really mind boggling decision based on what we saw post tea session.

This blunder makes sure that NZ are in the game.

Panic decision looks like.Should have gone all out and try to score 600 and bat once. Now they have to bat twice.

Right decision . You want them batting for 10-12 overs after being in field for 167 . I would have declared at 400 .

lol . Kiwi's on this flat dull slow surface will fold under 250 . Bookmark it . ps : the r/r of hosts was atrocious & poor advert for Test cricket . These pitches are a disgrace .

Agree. People are going overboard about Haris batting slow, when this was the easier problem to fix. Have no idea why they didn't do this.

In fact might be better off continuing batting, get a huge score, bat once and enforce the follow on.

400 or so isn't much of a target. Easy to get 200 runs to avoid the follow on. If the opposing team get anywhere near our total, we'll have to bat again and set a total we won't be scared to lose against.

Instead we chose the strange middle ground option which was probably the worst one. We didn't commit either way.

Yep. We had two options, quickly score 400/450 or so making sure enough time to bat again. Or bat once, and try to get the follow on. With so many wickets in hand, we were likely to score a lot quicker than we will score in our second innings.

Why did they not go bang bang , if the declaration was the plan. Sarfraz is getting bad to worst, as captain.

Australia managed a draw at the same venue not long ago. You cannot bat 2 full days when you're 1-0 down in the series, it had to be done. Sure quicker runs would have been nice but runs on the board was the key.

Pakistan bowlers have an opportunity to bowl with runs on the board now.

This!! If you are going to declare and leave the other team 10 overs to bat, u need to get as many as u can towards the end of your innings.
Let's hope it does not come back to burn

I have a feeling they were all having a tea party and celebrating birthdays in the dressing room and not really focussing on the game itself. They only came out to the balcony to see a hundred and even then they were made to wait hours with players spending an eternity in the 90s. Everyone switched off, this is what can happen when people are bored to sleep because of this negative approach by the batsmen.

Hun araam eh? We have 410 after 160 overs and New Zealand will bat the next 6 sessions without remorse setting up a Pakistan innings defeat

Come on man, some proper analysis please. These type of comments are ridiculous, you think these guys enjoy the abuse from 'fans' after every loss? They will do their utmost to win every game...

What was logic at batting near enough 6 sessions at snails pace? Are we protecting a 1-0 lead and trying to win the series?

Perhaps its expected to rain in the next 3 days ? Thats the only explanation I can come up with but even that doesn't make much sense. Looks very fishy to be honest given that its a flat track.

However if it doesnt rain and NZ dont collapse its going to be difficult for Pakistan to win. All pressure now on Pak bowlers as they are 0-1 down in the series and they have to bowl out NZ. If they fail to do that and NZ put up a big score they can kiss goodbye to the series.

Plan should have been declare at 400 getting their briskly after tea. Bowling NZ out for 300 by the end of the next day. Pakistan bat whole of day scoring 240 - 270 before subsequently bowling them out on the final day.

There is rain predicted for tomorrow morning but that's about it. However there was no rain predicted for after noon today but it was raining at 4 pm.

Very poor planning and intent shown. Also I've heard it all now:

"In UAE i would rather take 300 off 800 balls than a 350 scored in 400 balls"

Like seriously lool? :sarf2

Babar's century slowed it down. Team can't deny him his first hundred and he took almost 30+ balls in his 90s to get to his 100. I think the plan was always to give NZ a few overs to bat.

Ummm??

Who on earth said this? And surely if it were to make any sense the total runs scored should be the other way round :irfan ?

(So rather score 350 off 800 than 300 off 400)

Confusing decision for me, If they had to declare with some overs to spare, why they wasted a lot of overs for no good reason. They should have gone hard at the ball for some overs before the declaration. I hope we'll get them all out tomorrow otherwise it could be a draw due to our slow RR

Misbah style batting performance followed up with a Clarke-like declaration. If you want to grind them then atleast get 500+.

The more I watch the Pakistan bat, the more I am becoming uninterested in cricket. There was a time you would look forward to Pakistan bat. The Anwars, the Inzis, the YK, the MoYo, the Salim Maliks, the Moin Khans. Even when Wasim Akram used to come to bat at no.8, you knew there would be fire works.

Not anymore I am afraid. The half entertaining batsman of this team (Fakhar Zaman) is busy somewhere sun bedding.

With the time we batted, we should have gotten over 500. Don't disgaree with the declaration. We will need a lot of time to dismiss NZ twice.

Mate the guy who said it began his response by saying “Children watching Test Cricket”

Ironic thing is, under Misbah, the likelihood is we would have had 500+ at the same stage.

I agree if the plan was to have a bowl at them before the end of the day then with 6 wickets in hand heading into the final session we really should have scored at a much faster rate. Should have tried to reach 450 and give them 8/10 overs to bat.
