Fake news is a worldwide problem.

If there's one thing we all agree regardless of our political, religious and policy views...it's that we need to fight FAKE news at every point.

Doesn't matter if it comes from right wing sources or left wing sources.

Wrong is wrong.

Fake news elicits emotions.

It engineers perception.

It causes IMMENSE harm (even if it's debunked later).

The only way to fight fake news is to maintain constant vigil.

So let's compile all the fake news in India under one thread so that it's easy for us to get upto speed on what's real and what's fake.

Lie : Muslim guy spitting on police happened after TJ incident

Guy in this video has exposed this lie. :inti

No proof for that...This guy is a politician no expert..He should use careful words not conspiracies..

This was in publications like reuters. Any engineer in the field will tell you that it’s true. What happened was that the indian govt asked the power authorities to make the necessary contingencies and plans. If nothing happened then there would be grid failures

I have not seen a single techncial guy who said all grids will fail and it need a week to repair. And this guy is Power minsiter..

All news in India are fake, they need lessons from Uganda. Best journalism is have seem so far.

It would have been hilarious if the steep decline in load led to a surge in voltage causing feeders around the country to trip and power would have gone out for ALOT longer than 9 minutes.

Well done to the power engineers behind the scenes to manage the fall out of this useless exercise

Fun thread.

Few days ago while investigating the initial report that the Hindu's are being denied food I came across this video:

COVID-19: Hindus denied food supplies in Pakistan's Karachi
Channel IndiaTV
Subscribers: 18.1 million

It has a touching and heart warming introduction seeing poor Hindu women appearing lost with a sad background music. At 1:00 they interview one of the women to strengthen their claim and that's when a dramatic plot twist happens:

Women complains about police violence against them and uses the phrase "hum jaise aurtain" referring to lower class and poor women. She doesn't say "Hindu women" as one might have expected or something else to indicate a discrimination on religious bias. Still that's not too big of an issue.

The first time I had to raise my eyebrows was when @1:10 she says "we have no one else other than Allah". I thought why would a Hindu women uses the term "Allah" instead of say "Bhagvan". However, I was willing to give it a benefit of doubt and thought perhaps as a Hindu living in a Muslim majority country she preferred to use the "Allah" as an universal term to refer to any God

Things get really sketch when @1:31 she mentions that to earn money she teaches Quran to kids for 10-20 rupees. That's when I thought, darn it got punked by Indian media once again!

What Hindu women can teach Quran? An other red flag is that she has no Hindu symbolism on her forehead, that bindi dot. All the women standing behind her have covered their head properly and also don't have the bindi dot.

There is no mention of a lockdown, Coronavirus, Muslims or any discriminating charity organization. It's most probably a clip from the past, since the poor women is criticizing Sindh government in general terms for supporting the drug dealers while neglecting the poor.

It's a 5 days old video with nearly 50K views and 800+ likes. The majority of the Indians in the comment section seem to just blindly accept the narrative.

We know there are highly smart Indians out there in Engineering and medical field but it makes me wonder how intelligent an average Indian must be. I mean the Indian commenting can't be the illiterate ones and must have had some level of education, since they are commenting in English and even in Devanagari script.

I was even ready to give the people commenting more benefit of doubt and thought they are perhaps South Indians who don't understand Hindi/Urdu but you have so many hindi comments that I am out of excuses.

I don't expect any love from Indians, however with such an obviously fake video I was hoping to see more reasonable voices. The critical thinking skill of the average IndianTV viewers seems to be zero. The only handful of comments pointing out the fraud seems to be Pakistani based on their Muslim names.

Seeing masses falling for such an obvious hate spreading propaganda just makes me shake my head and I doubt the whole region will ever become reasonable anytime soon.

There needs to be some sort of way get such obvious fake propaganda deleted. Imagine a foreign non-South Asian person comes across the video. It makes me angry, seeing the image of my people getting tarnished at the time of global crisis when the reality is exactly the opposite.

We need to educate & uplift our own people and be positive role models where ever we live in the world. Continue to change the perception so that the global community themselves start to question and see through the propaganda

Only check if a news is fake if it doesn't fit with my views. Otherwise if it shows "them" and "the other" in a bad light, I accept it as true news by default.

The biggest fake news ever was Aloo Sona machine one.

IT cell's biggest creation ever.

80% from that Arnab Goswami's channel Republic TV (the low tech one with the terrible graphics) is fake.

News that Hospital in Rajasthan refused to treat a pregnant lady because she is Muslim is faked by her husband and media blindly published.
I got your point but I think they shouldn't be letting the couple without an ambulance if it was that critical he is one stupid doctor tho and personally don't think if someone's that educated he should be that hateful if he is it's genuinely scary

*** muslims spitting on food to spread covid 19 omg but their cammunity will also be affected by this virus why would they do it?
That's just stupid at least think about it before publishing

It's not stupid thinking.

Muslims terrorists blow themselves up.

So why not do this?

That's the line of thinking.

Will have takers.

Her husband changed his initial statement and you know pretty well how it works. There is a thread on the same topic. Kindly read it.

Already shared above in this thread by me.

News that Firozabad locals pelted stones was fake. In that tweet written in hindi firozabad police is denying that stone pelting took place and asking them to delete that tweet.

Morphed AajTak Screenshot Claims Pak PM's Wife Tests COVID-19 Positive

BOOM found that the image is false and photoshopped to make a false claim.

A viral graphic claiming AAJ Tak reported that Bushra Bibi, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife has tested postive for the novel coronavirus is false, and the graphic photoshopped.

The photoshopped screenshot with the logo of the Hindi news channel falsely claims that the Bibi, tested positive after she came in contact with his driver. The fake graphic falsely claims that the driver has tested positve for COVID-19 and Khan's househelp is showing symptoms of coronavirus. The graphic further claims that Khan has tested negative.

:))

Some people are so much in rush posting anti India stuff that they will not even verifiy before posting. Irony is, they are posting fake stories to prove fake news in India.

Jeez liberals.

It is obvious that the image is fake, anyone can see it's a low-res image that has probably been edited.

The question is that why is a verified Twitter user from India with 90k followers tweeting such stuff?

While it is unclear how Faesal’s tweet violated any guidelines, the Narendra Modi government’s action against him is in stark contrast to its silence over another IAS officer’s social media postings which appear to more directly violate service rules.

1986 batch IAS officer Sanjay Dixit, who is posted in Rajasthan, is infamous for sharing fake news and posts with communal undertones...

https://thewire.in/government/ias-sanjay-dixit-shah-faesal

If action can be taken against other IAS officers for Tweets then why not him? :)

Not the first time news channels from India are picking up a video from Social Media and using it in their shows to create a fake news. Mesozoic :inti

:)) Indian media is the epicenter of fake news. Amount of garbage they run on most of their channels based on their hatred is absolutely comical. Laughing stock for a reason. They just run garbage because that's what the masses desire.

Glad Pakistan doesn't go down the route of this gutter mindset running in majority like across the border.

Unfortunately, once this type of tweet goes viral then there is very little that can stop its traction, even if it is fake, whether it's this, or other narratives.

Social media platforms need to understand the increasing role social media is playing in people's perception of the world and do something about such things. If removing it isn't an option then there should be a disclaimer or a tag of some sort with the tweet that can show people that the information being spread is incorrect/out of context/out of date.

Zee News is known for fake news. Even in this thread alone you can find so many fake news from Zee News alone. :inti

Most blind followers will see such a tweet and if they have a certain bias the, will see it justified and their stance intensified. Few will ever come back and revisit to see whether it's fake.

Therefore anybody with a significant following caught spreading fake news with an intention of spreading a certain narrative should have their accounts terminated.

Misleading information has been spreading in India as the authorities attempt to control the coronavirus with strict restrictions on movement throughout the country.

We've been looking at some of the more widely shared examples.

1. Was a peak in the Alps lit up to thank India?

This claim refers to an image of the Matterhorn, one of the highest mountains in the Alps, straddling the border between Switzerland and Italy, lit up with an image of the Indian flag.

A widely shared tweet by a senior official of the ruling party in India suggests the lightshow was in recognition of India's leading role in combatting the coronavirus.

According to BJP National General Secretary B L Santosh this was because India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had supplied the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine.

The drug has attracted attention as a potential treatment for Covid-19, although there are no completed clinical trials or evidence of its efficacy.

India is one of the largest manufacturers of this drug and has so far agreed to supply hydroxychloroquine to at least 55 countries, although Switzerland is not one of them.

But sending supplies of this drug to other countries is not the reason the Swiss authorities lit up the mountainside with the Indian flag.

The local tourism authority has been illuminating the Matterhorn every day since late March with the flags of many different countries hit by coronavirus "as a sign of hope to the world in difficult times".

You can follow these daily projections here.

2. Is a Muslim man spitting linked to the virus spread?

A video showing a Muslim man spitting is doing the rounds on social media, as concerns mount about growing Islamophobia against the Muslim minority in India.

The video shows the man in a vehicle with police officers, one of whom he spits on.

The original text (in Bengali) roughly translates as: "For those who want proof, here's a video that shows the Jamaatis from Nizamuddin spitting on policemen."

This refers to a large Muslim religious gathering in March by a group known as the Tablighi Jamaat, in the Nizamuddin area of the Indian capital, Delhi.

This gathering was later blamed for helping to spread the virus, with several thousand positive cases linked back to it, according to official figures.

The video of the Muslim man spitting has been shared several thousand times - but it's misleading.

A reverse image search shows it has nothing to do with the religious gathering in Delhi.

It's from a report in February by the Mumbai Mirror, a local newspaper in western India, about a 26-year-old man who was under arrest and got into an argument with police officers about the food he was being given.

The video was shot in Thane, a city on the outskirts of Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra, and not in Delhi.

3. A model example of Indian social distancing?

Images of proper social distancing said to be from a marketplace in the north-eastern Indian state of Mizoram have been widely shared by Indian users on social media,

They've commented on what a good example it sets to the rest of the country, given widespread concerns about the lack of social distancing in some places.

But these images are misleading because they're not from India - they're from neighbouring Myanmar.

A reverse image search reveals the same images were used this month by Philippines-based ABS-CBN News and other media outlets in South East Asia, saying they are from Myanmar.

The images have also been shared by some Burmese Facebook users, who say they show a market in Myanmar.

And by zooming in on some of these pictures, it's just possible to make out a couple of shop signs and an advertising hoarding written in Burmese script.

Police complaint filed against News18 India anchor Amish Devgan in Mumbai for spreading fake news on his show ‘Aar Paar’

Mumbai: A Police complaint has been filed against News 18 anchor Amish Devgan for spreading false news on his show Aar Paar on May 1, 2020. The Police complaint has been registered over his false claims of Muslims offering of namaz in Kurla masjid, Devgn also showed a fake video claiming the gathering of people near Kurla Masjid.

The Police complaint was registered at the Kurla police station in Mumbai.

The founding member of Public Care Foundation Shahzad Khan and President of All India Transport Congress (INTUC), Azim Khan filed a complaint against Amish Devgn for spreading fake news through his show Aar Paar on News 18 channel, Amish is accused of hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.

Shahzad Khan, the founding member of NGO Public Care Foundation, in conversation with Newsd said that the dispute took place in Kurla on April 29 but Amish aired the video of the same on May 1, claiming it was of the same day. He further told us that the location of the dispute between the localites and the police took place in the Wafati lane area which is not even near to Kurla Masjid.

Shahzad further added to it that Amish’s show has not only hurt their sentiment but has also lead the attack on Maharashtra government as it raised the questioned toward their lockdown imposition rules. Khan said that the Mumbai Police and the Muslim community was targeted with the fakes news of Amish Devgn and thus they have filed a complaint against him.

The Public Care Foundation and INTUC has demanded the imposition of Section 129(a) and Section 124(a) on Amish Devgn and News18 for spreading fake news.

The complaint further added that on May 1, Amish Devgn’s show Aar Paar was aired at 7:40 PM, Devgn showed the fake news and claimed it that Muslim community was offering prayers at the Kurla Masjid amid the lockdown.

Amish on his show had said that ” Iss samay ki bohot badi khabar, Kurla se tasveerein aa rahi hai waha par namaaz ke baad masjid mein logo ki jyada bheed thi toh police vahan par gayi hai, Police ke sath badsalukhi ki gayi hai.”

Anchor Amish also showed a clip of people gathering at Masjid by claiming the false statement.

Amish Devgn of News18 India has often faced public ridicule on social media. A Congress spokesperson had once famously called him a ‘names’ during a live TV debate on Devgn’s own TV channel. Since then, his critics have frequently targeted him by calling him a ‘cheap copy of Arnab Goswami.’

Maybe off topic but second day in a row I watched Major Gorav Arya (?) on Republic TV openly waving with Mobile phone saying he has daily contact with Balochi separists fighting for independence. What kind of journalism is this? And he is openly admitting India are involved in terrorist actions in Pakistan.

Two of India’s leading medical institutions and a top doctor have criticised a message being widely shared on WhatsApp groups which attributes false and misleading coronavirus health advice to them.

The message contains a long list of precautions to take to avoid getting the virus, some of which are recommended measures, such as social distancing and personal hygiene.

But it also recommends eating only vegetarian food, not wearing belts, rings or wrist watches, and not using a handkerchief - none of which give any protection from the virus.

The message says this advice is from the Indian Council for Medical Research, a top hospital in Delhi called the Sir Ganga Ram, and a well-known heart surgeon Dr Devi Shetty.

But all of them have told us the advice has nothing to do with them, and criticised those who originated it.

"It is very sad during this crisis people want to take advantage of our helplessness," Dr Shetty told the BBC.

Abhijat Mishra, national general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), BJP’s youth wing, shared the viral video and wrote, “This young woman from Bihar stays in Siliguri in Bengal. But Mamata Banegree’s illegal Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh have attacked her. Look at her condition. Punished for being a Bihari #HinduDieBengalBurns. Mishra’s tweet was retweeted over 11,000 times and the viral video has been viewed over 2.5 lakh times.

On May 14, Siliguri Police Commissionerate’s Facebook page shared a post which said that there is no communal angle to the story. As per the post, “A case has been lodged at Cyber Crime PS against Abhijat Mishra for false propaganda for making the issue a communal in his Twitter account.” The post also informed that the woman in the video is Anuradha Pandey and her family was heckled by Rubi Das and his family on May 12. Thus the social media claim that illegal “Muslim” immigrants from Bangladeshi attacked them is false. Siliguri Police Commissionerate further informed that a complaint was registered at New Jalpaiguri Police Station.

Mumbai Video Shared as ‘Inefficiency’ of Delhi Govt During COVID

As India grapples with the coronavirus outbreak, Delhi has been reporting more than 500 cases of COVID-19 for the past ten days. The National Capital now has 16,281 confirmed cases, which include 7,500 recovered patients.

In light of this, a video showing unhygienic conditions of the COVID-19 ward in a hospital is being widely shared on social media with a claim that it’s from Delhi. The video shows dead bodies being kept in the same ward as other sick patients.

However, we at WebQoof found that contrary to the claim, the video is not from Delhi but from Mumbai’s KEM (King Edwards Memorial) Hospital.
