He has asked the PCB for a NOC and there was a lot of speculation about him playing in the CPL as a result but looks like he'll be joining Somerset .

If this goes through, he'll enjoy playing at Taunton.

The flattest ground in the country and short boundaries.

I've said before that I'm pretty sure he doesn't meet the requirements to qualify as a foreign player so not sure how this would work out?

Nice he will perhaps bat along side Trescothick. Good batsman to learn from.

Wish Sharjeel was tearing it up at Leicestershire

What part of the requirements he doesn't meet?

15 limited overs internationals in the last 2 years or a test match.

He has 3 T20s and 4 ODIs under his belt. Needs 8 more matches to be able to qualify. When does the county season start?

haha bhai its at the end phase now

Would be good move and a very nice ground to bat on and score lots of runs.

Interesting point
Maybe this story is something that the PCB chairman has "heard" mentioned some where recently?

Can you kindly check whether that is for 4 day competition or for every format in county cricket?

I think that criteria is only for first class cricket...

but i checked a lot of websites and everywhere it is written that he is signing for CPL... the mention of Somerset is nowhere except here.

OVERSEAS PLAYER UPDATE

Corey Anderson will be returning to New Zealand immediately to undergo treatment for a stress fracture to his back and he will therefore play no further part in Somerset’s NatWest T20 Blast competition.

Since he joined Somerset the big hitting left hander has played a key part in the teams successes on the field which has put them in a good position to qualify for the next stage of the T20 competition.

Before he departed Corey said: “I am grateful to Somerset for giving me an opportunity to play cricket in England and only sorry that I have been unable to conclude my stay with them. However I hope that at some point in the future when my back problem has been resolved that I will be able to return.

Matt Maynard said: “It’s disappointing that Corey has had to return to New Zealand, particularly in light of what he has achieved during his short time with us. During his time here Corey has soldiered on bravely and managed his ongoing stress fracture well but now it needs immediate treatment.

“We have really enjoyed having him around and he has made a positive contribution both on and off the field at the Club. Hopefully we will see him again in Taunton in the future.”

As an overseas replacement Somerset have agreed terms with Pakistan top order batsman Fakhar Zaman until the end of the season in both formats. Zaman came to prominence when he scored 114 for Pakistan in their victory over India in the ICC Champions Trophy Final at the Oval in June this year.

The 27 year old left handed batsman has appeared in four One Day Internationals in which he has scored 252 runs at an average of 63, he has also played in three T20 Internationals in which he averages 13.

In his career Fakhar has played in 35 First Class matches and scored 2,269 runs at an average of 63, whilst in 51 List A games he averages 50.18. Fakhar Zaman will join Somerset as soon as his visa is granted and will be available for selection from then on.

Matt Maynard said: “It’s great to have Fakhar joining us and in addition we will have Dean Elgar back for the final three NatWest T20 Blast group stage games.

“However Dean has to return to South Africa for a camp prior to the South Africa vs Bangladesh series. As a result, he will play no further Specsavers County Championship cricket for us. This is why Fakhar will be available for us in both formats until the end of the season.”

Massive news that he'll be playing FC aswell! Going to be great for his development.

Wow FC

That's an outstanding achievement, and a brilliant source of learning and getting the necessary exposure.

Alright then, time for me to try and work out what has happened to these overseas qualification rules!

Tracks at Taunton are typically extremely flat (with tiny boundaries) in t20 with a bit more in it for the spinners in the longer format.

it demands that a player must hav played a specific amount of first class cricket (not necessary international Test Cricket).... i think 15 first class matches....
bcz this was the reason given when LEGGIE rashid khan wasn't allowed to play county cricket...

Na, the rule was definitely a certain amount of international cricket in a recent period, although evidently it's been removed or relaxed, I'll have a look around.

Rashid Khan obviously had more than 15 international caps... why wasn't he eligible to play county then.... confusing.
please do notify if u find sumthin about rules..

As I said before, the fact he had a central contract seems to be the way he met the rules.

Playing county Cricket will only improve his temperament and technique. Good luck lad!

Associate players cannot qualify as overseas players. With Afghanistan having full member status though that will probably change soon.

Doesn't whole Ireland team play county cricket....
Are irish players overseas or not????

Not currently, but Irish players will soon be considered international players after Ireland was granted test status.

To follow up:

"the cricketer must be currently centrally contracted to the Cricket Board of the cricketer’s home country and in the current or most recent Test Match or One Day International or International Twenty20 team squad where the home country is a Full Member Country of
the ICC."

Hey HitWicket here's the answer.....

Back to the actual signing, it's great news and I am happy to see he will be playing t20s and FC cricket.

It will be interesting to see how in performs in the longer format in English conditions. Who knows, if he performs well Inzi might consider him as a back-up opener for the upcoming England tour.

Any news on Fakhar's visa? Because Imad couldn't play due to not getting the visa in time.

Happy for the kid.
Pakistan cricket future is bright. Era of me,me,me and show offs seem to be history. Era of team players has already started.

Good news for Fakhar and for Pakistan cricket, but I'm surprised by this signing though.

Seems like they've made this decision based on a couple of innings.

Corey Anderson has picked up an injury and Dean Elgar is unavailable for the rest of the season so they could do with someone to fill the gap. Not many other options around who would be available for the entire season due to international commitments and the CPL.

Should have been picked up way sooner. Would also been nice to see Hasan Ali sign as I'm aware several counties try to get him to play.

May be they believe that this lad has potential and is good enough to play in English conditions.

Good that he's playing FC too. Could do wonders for his technique in the longer format.

Hope Shafiq and Babar get a stab at County Cricket too. Could help them massively

Shouldn't be surprised, happens in other sports too, for eg. football world cup where the likes of relatively unknown James Rodriguez was signed by a giant like Real Madrid based on a couple of performances in that tourney.

Somerset coach yesterday said that Fakhar is still waiting for a visa and at the moment they do not know when he will arrive in the UK.

horrible. He needed this experience more than Amir even. Would've really gained some good experience in LOI cricket.

Phateechar Cricket Board at it again.

Absolutely ridiculous decision. He's an established member now for LO so we won't learn anything from his performances in this competition. Whilst Fakhar would have picked up a lot from playing first class cricket in England. PCB with another pathetic decision.

Stupid.

we'd see more of what he is capable of doing out here instead of playing some dumb pointless tournament in pakistan

I don't believe this. What is wrong with the PCB? They seriously want the players to leave county, which will actually help in giving them exposure and making them better players over some second-string T20 tournament? County opportunities are very rare these days, especially for Pakistani players. The PCB has ruined something potentially great for Fakhar. I'm just glad atleast Amir got to play a decent amount of cricket at Essex.

Somerset director of cricket Matthew Maynard confirms Fakhar Zaman will not be joining the club

SOMERSET director of cricket Matt Maynard has confirmed that Pakistan international Fakhar Zaman will not be joining the club as planned.

Speaking after the six-wicket defeat to Kent on Saturday, he said: "The PCB have called back their centrally contracted players who have been playing in the CPL or county cricket, of which Fakhar is one.

"His visa has come through and he was all set to get on a flight tomorrow, but that's no longer the case and unfortunately he won't be joining us.

"I think I've found a replacement, who is a similar type of player and can slot into the top order."

The opening batsman was due to join the club in the wake of Corey Anderson's return to New Zealand due to injury, but his arrival was halted as he waited for a visa and he will now play no part in Somerset's fight for survival in Division One of the County Championship.

More news regarding the identity of the new signing is expected at the start of next week.

So Fakhar had got his visa at long last. Too bad, Fakhar. Legends are made in the National T20 Cup.

:salute

While I would have liked him to have a stint with Somerset but its pleasing to see all the players will be there for the National T20 Cup as considering a lot of other boards especially Westindies, have never been able to have their premier players play in their domestic tournuments other than CPL even Australia for that matter.

Personally its good on PCB's behalf that they havent stopped any of their players to play in any league of the world like many other boards do. Now just bcz they are holding a national cup and there are no international commitments at this time so its pretty fair with players to be asked to participate.

So this year national T20 cup is going to be like mini PSL but only with local players. It looks like its going to be an amazing tournament with all the international players playing. Its going to be a great learning curve for someone like Shaheen Shah, Ghulam Mudassar bowling against the likes of Fakhar, Babar. Srafaraz or Malik etc.

While Saif Badar, Hussain Talat and Sahibzada Farhan will cherish the oppurtunity against the likes of Amir, Junaid, Hassan, Shadab etc.

So i am really hopeful we are going to find few players for the future and they might get themselves a contract for PSL.

I think this T20 cup is an excellent opportunity for youngsters to rub shoulders with veterans like Anwar Ali, Bilawal Bhatti and Kamran Akmal and learn a thing or two.
At the same time, it affords Amir, Fakhar, Sarfraz and other senior pros an opportunity to polish their skills on the slow, low wickets of Pakistan. *fingers crossed * It's going to be a fantastic battle between the bat and the turf.

:)))

I take back all my posts Abdullah719

Whole thing regarding the PCB calling these players back is a total farce and will affect Pakistani players getting contracts in Counties in future.

Whole thing regarding the PCB calling these players back is a total farce and will affect Pakistani players getting contracts in Counties in future.

This is exactly why Counties don't invest in pakistani players (read batsmen) and this will only hurt Pakistan. Out of the blue PCB arranges a tournament, there is no long term planning whatsoever.

If I was Fakhar I'd give PCB the finger and continue playing for this county.

No way they can touch him now after what he did in the champions trophy. Cricket fans in the country will riot if they try drop him as punishment right now.

Time for Kohli to swoop in and grab the spot vacated by Fakhar. Somerset will be happy to get a better replacement, it will help Kohli gain more exposure to English conditions and will also generate goodwill of bcci among counties.

Seeing the professionalism of Kohli these counties would prefer Indian players over Pakistani players from next year onwards

Theres no point now

Kohli wont get to play many FC matches and secondly the pitches are worn out now so the tough English conditions part of the summer is well over

They hardly ever get picked by counties anyway and now after such a thing, they would not be picking them again especially after seeing PCB's such behaviour.
