NOWSHERA: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan while speaking to the press on Thursday said that the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) should be made a part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Imran said a separate province for Fata is not viable because a new province cannot be made near the border.

The PTI leader said the cabinet would have to consult with Fata's tribal leaders, elders and experts on the matter to reach a consensus on the issue, and discuss how the "old British system" could be done away with.

He said the people of Fata should be given the opportunity to become a part of Pakistan and be given their due rights.

The PTI Chairman strongly criticised the Election Commission of Pakistan. "Why did they not allow us to campaign for NA-122 by-polls?" he asked.

"Nawaz Sharif's kisaan package is the biggest pre-poll rigging," he said. "If he wanted to announce a package, why didn't he put it in the budget? It is gimmickry to say that the province will pay for half the cost of fertiliser. The province doesn't have any money ─ It's been dispersed already, so how can they pay for it? If he was sincere about the package, he would have announced a relief package when the budget came out."

"When you go after money used to finance terrorism, money collected through corruption goes alongside it," Imran claimed.

Referring to the PPP, Imran said, "They’re telling them to hold off and exerting pressure on Nawaz, who is telling his ministers to go easy on them," adding, "The masses want accountability from the corrupt people ─ who are looting this country and buying Rs4.3 billion worth of property in Dubai in two years."

"The Rangers should not be doing this; it is not the Rangers' job — it is the government's job," he said.

"I only took action against Ziaullah Afridi after he started hurling accusations at everyone in the party and blackmailing them," he said.

"If there were corruption charges against him, he should have come forward with them. This is just like Zardari and Nawaz, they both accuse each other of being corrupt. This is not the way things are done in a democracy," Khan said, adding that Afridi's duty was to clear his own name.

"This happens in KP because our NAB is free and won't spare anyone," he explained.

Good to see him not running away for responsibility. Making Fata a part of KP with all those issues is going to make it really hard to run KP province but at least someone is willing to give it a chance instead of running away from problems.

What is current setup of FATA ? And if anyone can tell me what was it part of Historically.

Correct. But it makes perfect sense to make FATA a part of KP.

It does not from what I read from Wiki.
Its a tribal area with predominant rural population (about 95%).
Its better to develop it first then integrate it. It doesn't have the requisite infrastructure and linkages to be able to compete with KP.
Its better to give it more autonomy and develop plans for growth from bottom to up.

Fata means Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Fata is controlled by Federal government and on behalf of the President, the Governor of KP exercises the federal authority but KP Assembly has no power in FATA and FATA has no representation in the Provincial Assembly of KP. FCR (Frontier Crimes Regulations) that British started using for this region back in 1901 are still active. Supreme Court or High Courts are not working in Fata. There are political agents working as head of every tribal agency in Fata and those political agents represent President of Pakistan.

Thanks for the Info. So its similar to 7 Union territories in India which are governed by Governor appointed by President.

Can you also tell me historically what was it part of? or it had been ethnically and administratively independent since the beginning.

I agree about Hazara from KP and Potohar and Seraiki/Bahawalpur from Punjab should be made new provinces.

Chitral should also be made a separate province. They relate more to GB.

Also Karachi should be made a federal territory, or Lower Sindh should made into a separate province, but I don't see PTI offering any solutions to the problems in Karachi.

hazara and chitral should also be made separate provinces

hazara people should first and foremost change the name of the city haripur, which is named after that ******* hari singh, sikhs banned azan and cow slaughter in punjab and hazara areas, can't believe there has been no protest to change the name of that city.

The people of gujranwala have turned Hari singhs old house into a madrassa, Big lol the religion he hated so much is being preached at his old residence.

Don't know about the history but perhaps true natives of "KPK" want to preserve their history, and not rename it after invaders.

Once Peshawar,Swat,Charsadda etc were just like Hazara but now the demographics have changed drastically; Hazarewals want to retain their past unlike those other cities

It was named haripur after hari singh conquered it 200 years ago it must have had a different name before that, I even told one hazarawal from haripur and the guy didn't even know the city was named by Hari singh, He was in shock lol.

If people were logical about it, all the area from the river Kabul to Quetta, including FATA, would be a part of Pakhtunwa while the areas north of the Kabul (Chitral, Abottabad,...) would join Gilgit Baltistan to make a province for northern non-pakhtuns. Then you'd have the capital of the new Balochistan in Gwadar which would also help its developement.

Can't blame only haripur people because most locals of these cities don't even know Abbottabad, Jacobabad, Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), Lawrencepur, Campbellpore (now Attock) etc are all named after British.

It isn't so easy. The state doesn't want to give ethnonationalists are solid majority in any province which could be used as blackmail for secession a la Quebec & Scotland

Sargodha is also British.

Sahiwal was also formerlly called "Montogomery"

yea but i think are several theories about Sargodha name too just like there were many about Campbellpore (Change to Attock in 1978). Attock was named after Sir Campbell but even now most locals say that the name of Attock was Campbellpore because there used to be a Camel Corps of Military here.

Why pashteen never asked for this? IK is demanding this from 3 years and his party let govt in kp was ready for this even though there was going to be security issues for the whole province in next few years to settle this down but still it was a win-win situation for the country and the people of Data.

This is another reason i find these Pastheen types very dodgy, FATA-KPK merger is solution to majority of problems but instead of supporting that these people are starting some right movement.....Ironically Achakzai who opposes this merger is one of key supporters of this Pashteen guy.....

Merger should only go through if the rivaj act is abolished and strong protections are put in place to ensure a speedy death with zero chamces of revival for their koke of a justice system. If the merger goes through with FATA retaining its existing tribal justice system, they get carte blanche to engage in some disgusting human rights violations.

Fata to be merged with KP in 2019, says Khattak

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said on Thursday that Fata (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) would be formally merged with KP in 2019 after holding of elections in the region for giving its people representation in the provincial assembly.

“Elections for the KP Assembly are likely to be held in the region in March or April 2019 and then the government will notify Fata’s merger with the province,” Mr Khattak said while addressing a press conference at the CM House.

He said Fata would be merged with KP in 2019 and for this purpose the government would issue a notification in next May. He said that elections would be held in Fata to give representation to tribal people in the KP Assembly.

The chief minister said that elections for local governments would be conducted in Fata in October next year. “The government would make necessary amendments in the Constitution to pave the way for Fata’s merger with the province.”

Mr Khattak said these landmark decisions were taken in a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Fata Reforms in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Mr Khattak attended the meeting that was chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

The committee took a number of important decisions and finalised the “timeline” for various actions required to be taken for the mainstreaming of Fata, including its merger with KP. The committee also ordered abolition of the Agency Development Fund.

The chief minister urged leaders of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) to start talks with the jirga formed by KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra for acceptance of their demands within the framework of the Constitution. He said talks between the PTM leaders and the jirga should begin as soon as possible. “The PTM should start talks with the jirga immediately to avoid confusion and uncertainty,” he added.

Mr Khattak said he was taking up genuine demands of the PTM at all forums.

Governor Jhagra on the recommendation of the provincial apex committee constituted a 44-member jirga to hold talks with the PTM.

The jirga comprises elders from all tribal agencies, Frontier Regions, parliamentarians from Fata and political figures from Malakand region.

The jirga and PTM leaders have held two rounds of talks in Khyber Agency. Date for the next round of talks has not been fixed so far.

The PTM, a social-political movement, is demanding release of missing persons, abolition of ‘unnecessary check-posts’ from Fata to KP, removal of landmines and justice to the legal heirs of Naqeebullah Mehsud, who was killed in a fake encounter with police in Karachi.

The PTM has launched a movement for acceptance of its demands and is holding rallies across the country.

The army has either abolished several check-posts in Fata and KP or handed over them to police and Levies personnel.

• FATA is officially merged with KPK.
• No more FCR
• KP Provincial assembly seats will be increased to 145 after adding 21 seats of FATA.
• Elections on those seats will be held in 2019
• 100 bn per years in addition to 25 bn of NFC will be given for FATA.
• Same 12 NA seats till 2023 and than decreased to 6 and after adding those 6 seats to KP we will have 45 NA seats from KP

I am conflicted with about this a lot though I think fata needs to end but at the same time I feel we need more provinces maybe 20-25 instead of the current 4.

Creating a new province based on a conflicted border areas like FATA will be a disaster.
