Pakistan cricket coach Mickey Arthur on Thursday said that Fawad Alam needed to play aggressively to be noticed by the selectors.

During an interview with DawnNews, Arthur said the left-handed batsman was invited at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) where the selectors got a chance to "look at his [Fawad's] techniques to see how many pulls and the types of strokes he has in his armoury, and how many boundaries he hits".

However, he said, that the discarded player, who averages 40 in one-day internationals, needs to keep scoring runs and "hit more boundaries" in order to be selected.

“It was good to have Alam at NCA. We got to know about his fitness for the longer format,” he said.

The head coach insisted that he wanted "to make sure every individual improves their performance".

Pakistan's recent climb to the top slot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20 rankings was something to celebrate, however, he did not want players to lose focus, the coach added.

"Our T20 team is doing well and I think our ODI team is quite decent too," he admitted. "Now we need to get back to the top in Test cricket too."

Pakistan dropped to the seventh spot in the ICC Test rankings after getting thrashed by Sri Lanka in October in the first Test series after the departure of Misbahul Haq and Younis Khan.

Commenting on fast-bowler Sohail Khan, Arthur said that while he "admired the kind of work Sohail has been doing", the fast bowler was a decade too old.

What Bull

Sound's like they are fobbing him off. How many current pakistan squad players are hitting the boundaries.

He's right. Mickey knows more than pp experts. Fawad is a big no in LOIs

Need to hit more boundaries to make the Pakistani test squad because our batsmen are always batting with a high strike rate even in test matches!

Australian's exposed Fawad Alam's inability to hit boudaries by keeping fielders up and drying up his singles and nudges. Pakistan's domestic cricket is off very poor standard and got knows how much Fawad is able to get away with poor bowling and poor fielding standards

Couldn't agree more with Mickey. This guy was struggling aganist the likes of nasir Hussain and maxwell.

Abdullah719 Can you post his latest stance? I can't find the thread.

This?

Fawad`s problem is one of aesthetics- he looks awful at the crease. Chris Read had the same problem, despite being one of the best WK`s in the world and a solid bat he hardly played for England.

This guy bats like a tailender. Dry up his singles and he will try and hit out and get caught in the inner circle 10/10 times.

Don't need huge hitters in Test cricket.

That's the format he was made for and they've completely ignored him in his prime while promoting lesser talents.

What is the reason for not selecting him in the Test format then? I have not really followed him but I hear he has a great test record. Deserved a go for sure.

Coach is right and to the point, there is no place for Fawad Alam in LOIs... But why that principle is not applied to guys like Shezad, Azhar, Sarfraz etc...When did they ever hit boundaries? :srini:

In test in UAE, he will come back to the national side. Shafiq does not have balls, Babar struggles to score and looses his game when opposing Captain blocks his areas. Harris and Fawad can be solid combination for test...Although I would still like to keep Babar...

I don't know about Fawad's form right now but again what format is the coach talking about? If he is talking about tests then it is absolute nonsense. How aggressive are Pakistani tests batsmen? How many boundaries did they hit against SL? Boundaries or no boundaries, they struggled to score runs against SL. If he is talking about T20 or ODI, I will probably agree. If the coach is ignoring him for tests based on his boundary hitting capabilities then I am not sure if he is the right test coach for Pakistan.

Mickey what is wrong with you, we dont want him in anything else but whites"""
Just test cricket and he already has the best first class strike rate then the entire Pakistan squad""

More interesting is him saying that Sohail is a "decade too old". Seems eager to give new young fast bowlers a try, which is a good sign.

What non-sense. He is one of the busiest players on crease, exactly what our test team (and ODI team of previous decade) needs.

His First Class strike rate is always on the higher side, despite this ignorant notion of "inability to hit boundaries", and he can milk all types of bowlers in LOIs as well.

These are his stats for the last three seasons of Quaid E Azam Trophy:

QEA Trophy 2016/17: 9 Matches, 11 innings, 499 runs at 55.44 avg (SR 64.13, Highest score 108*)
QEA Trophy 2015/16: 8 Matches, 14 innings, 672 runs at 56.00 avg (SR 64.24, Highest score 224*)
QEA Trophy 2014/15: 8 Matches, 11 innings, 719 runs at 71.90 avg (SR 62.73, Highest score 201)

This season too he has been batting at strike rate of 59 despite green mambas been prepared in most of the games he played.

Total farce

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan cricket team’s head coach Mickey Arthur on Thursday said fast bowler Sohail Khan is ten years too late and chances of him making a comeback into the national team are very slim.

Speaking to Dawn News, the South African-born coach said he enjoys good relations with Sohail and there are no differences between them as insinuated by a section of the media. “I and Sohail enjoy good relations and I admire the hard work Sohail has been doing,” said Arthur. “He has altered his mindset and has been bowling well.”

“But I keep telling him that he is 34-years-old now while we have got many younger players who are playing really good cricket at 23 and 24 years of age. Unfortunately, that is the harsh truth,” he said.

Arthur further said that Sohail has been fantastic and and making good effort in all formats of the game, but he is a bit late for the national team selection now. “The systems might have failed him long ago, but if ten years ago he had done what he is doing right now, then who knows how big an international player he would have become,” he said.

The head coach also talked about one of Pakistan’s fittest players, Fawad Alam, who was also invited to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) recently to display his skills. “It was good to have Fawad at NCA. We got to know about his fitness for the longer format,” said Arthur.

“We put him through some good net sessions, it was an opportunity for us to see him play and see his skills and know what he is about,” he said. “We had a look at his techniques to see how many pulls and how many types of strokes he has.”

He added that 32-year-old Fawad needs to keep doing what he is doing and that is to keep scoring runs and pushing boundaries in terms of runs to make himself noticeable in the eyes of selectors.

The head coach, who recently had a feather in his cap when the Pakistan team became the top T20 team in the world, said that the team’s achievement is something to cheer about but he will not allow the players to get into a comfort zone. “We want to see the players getting better and improving all the time, we want to make sure every individual lifts his performance so we don’t want the the players to get into a comfort zone,” he said.

“Our T20 team is doing well and I think our ODI team is quiet decent too,” said Arthur. “Our test team was also on top but after Misbah and Younis left, its performance dropped and we could not do well against Sri Lanka. So now we need to work harder to get back that position in Test cricket too,” he concluded.

No one wants fawad in LOI teams we just want him in test side, so dont really see what Mickeys comment are all about

On Sohail Khan and Fawad. Mickey uttered the bitter truths... he emphasized the system failure which failed these two to improve or do things better what they are doing now ten years ago..

Pak just got white washed in test series. Couldn't even chase 130s in 2nd inning. Pak exactly need not the boundaries hitter in test but stable ones.

Is that for real?
Like he just do that for one odd ball here and there to play with bowler mind or this is his actual stance?

That's not his stance on delivery.

Before the ball is bowled his trigger movment changes him to a very open but relatively normal stance that does not expose his stumps like this.

Mickey Arthur needs to understand that Fawad is perfect for tests; I don't understand what issue PCB have with Fawad.

Mickey did specify that it’s the “longer format”. Perhaps he feels that fawad needs to be more than just a nudger and nurdler as we do have a few of them already in the team.

If Shehzad can get such an extended run, then Fawad deserves to play more than three international Tests.

Which version is true? There's a world of different between 'keep pushing boundaries' and 'hit more boundaries'. Previous one is terrible twisting of words if this is the right one.

Fair enough re Sohail Khan. Also he was given a chance in the World XI series and he didn't bowl great in the game we lost. The Alam excuse is just pathetic. Why do players like Shehzad get given a run in ODI's then? Also, we didn't want Alam in LOI formats anyway, just tests. Boundaries is not a legitimate reason for his exclusion in 5 day cricket.

Brilliant!!!! how many boundaries have shezzy hit and SR? many chances for a useless player but someone who scores runs(doesn't matter how) can warm the bench.. nice.

I guess Mickey's comments were in regards to selecting him in the ODI's. Fair enough.

They invited him to see his fitness for the longer format so he's on the cards I'm presuming which is promising though he should never have been dropped from the test side in the first place.

But why he is not in the Test Side?? Our Openers are failures, Asad Shafiq performs once in a blue moon. That's 3 spots that are open in test Team.

Shehzad has contacts, Alam has enemies.

I'm glad Fawad has at least been acknowledged though.

34 isnt that old for Sohail and with his lower order hitting abilities he could yet break into the LOI side if he really kills it. Agree its late though and that can only be his own fault for not putting the effort in.

What a nonsense comment from a top ranked coach .Pakistan test squad made of Asad,Azhar,Masood, and late i mean retired Misbah has all the ingredients to sedate all the viewers into deep sleep and coma with their tuk tuk tuk batting. They are without any rivalry easily the most boring test batting side in the world. Fawad is easily better in terms of strike rate and strike rotation.Noone is talking about his ODI potential. To be in the test squad he is overqualified. This recall to NCA is a total eyewash and predetermined one to rule out Fawad with this kind of predetermined idiotic argument.

More fake news from Pakistan media !

Arthur said he wants Fawad to push his boundaries not score more boundaries.

Thats what media backing can do to you :)
Lucky Fawad that atleast there are people who raised voice for him (some for their own gains though).

Sadaf bechara buddha ho jaye ga laikin mushkil he hai k koi awaz uthaye.

Today in semi final of Departmental OD Cup
Fawad Alam c Mir Hamza b Sameen Gul 12 ( 19b 1X4 0X6) SR: 63.1

Is that actually his stance, or just a moment where he's doing a quick stretch to one side before settling into his stance...or the bowler is already on his way down and he's opened himself up to do something pre-meditated...

He is a much better batsman then azhar and azhar is currently our best bat in the test team.

People complaining about how he looks or his stance are cringeworthy, look at Shiv or Steve
