Finn Allen pushes Black Caps case as Wellington Firebirds win
Finn Allen continued to push his case for a maiden Black Caps callup with a blistering innings of 73 off 35 balls as the Wellington Firebirds beat the Auckland Aces in the Twenty20 Super Smash on Sunday.
Once the prodigious opener was dismissed, incumbent Black Cap Devon Conway took over and made an unbeaten 91 off 58 balls at Eden Park Outer Oval.
Tom Blundell also chipped in with 46 off 23 as they posted 230-2 from their 20 overs, a new record total for their team and at that ground and one that proved to be far beyond the Aces’ reach.
The 39-run win was the perfect warmup for next Saturday's grand final at the Basin Reserve, as far as the Firebirds were concerned, and they will be favourites to defend their title against either the Central Stags or Canterbury Kings, who meet in the elimination final on Thursday.
Allen has now scored 496 runs at an average of 62 and a strike rate of 196 in the Super Smash this season, producing innings of 53 off 23, 91 not out off 50, 75 off 39, 92 not out off 43, and 66 off 27 prior to Sunday.
With incumbent Black Caps opener Martin Guptill struggling for form – his only innings of 50 or more this summer across all formats and levels was in the opening round of the Plunket Shield back in October – and managing a hamstring injury, which kept him out of Sunday’s fixture, the door is open for Allen to make the step up.
But with coach Gary Stead backing Guptill during the week, as he and Gavin Larsen prepare to name their squad for five T20s against Australia, while suggesting the discussion was a product of the media “[having] to write things in papers and stuff,” Allen might have to wait.
The Aces had no answer for the Firebirds’ onslaught with the bat, but Sean Solia did manage to concede just 23 runs from his four overs while picking up the wicket of Allen, who hit one of his four sixes over the main stand.
Chasing a mammoth target of 231 – and needing to score at more than 12 runs per over – the Aces made their way to 56-2 at the end of the six-over powerplay and 98-4 at the halfway point, but their task was only growing harder.
They were ultimately dismissed for 191 off the final ball of their innings with Will O’Donnell’s 38 off 24 their highest score.
Jimmy Neesham picked up three wickets – in one over at the death – and Hamish Bennett, Logan van Beek, and Peter Younghusband each nabbed a brace as the Firebirds made it nine wins out of 10 in the regular season.

Wellington Firebirds opener Finn Allen has continued his push for higher honours, smashing a blockbusting century for his side in the Ford Trophy on Sunday.
Wellington won the toss at the Basin Reserve and chose to bat against the Otago Volts.
Allen and Blackcap Tom Blundell smashed the Volts bowlers to all parts of the ground, adding 191 for the opening wicket in just 20.3 overs.
The 21-year-old continued his red-hot summer with a blazing 128 off 59 balls - his hundred coming off only 50 deliveries, his first domestic 50-over century.
The fringe Blackcap smashed nine fours and 11 sixes as the Otago bowling attack spent more time picking the ball off the bank than bowling.
Allen's innings came to an end when he was caught behind off the bowling of Michael Rae, but the Firebirds continued the onslaught on the visitor's bowlers.
Blundell (151), Michael Bracewell (47) and Jamie Gibson (44) continued the assault, to lift Wellington through to 427/8.
The Firebirds' innings was a historic one - the Kiwi side recording the highest list A (domestic 50-over) score in history.
The Volts put up a valiant effort, going big themselves with 345.
Michael Rippon (84), Dale Phillips (62) and Nathan Smith (50no) all pitched in, but the 427 was never going to be challenged.
Wellington came into the contest in fifth place in the Ford Trophy standings and their big win was enough to earn a playoff spot after Canterbury beat Auckland in Rangiora.
The Cantabs will host the final next weekend and will wait the winner of the elimination final between the Firebirds and Northern Districts.

Taking nothing away from the guy, but even Pujara could hit sixes for fun on these coin sized grounds.
The Basin Reserve is not a 'coin-sized' ground has good 70+ meter boundaries both straight and square of the wicket.

23-year-old Philip made his IPL debut in the UAE last year, playing five matches and scoring 78 runs. His replacement Finn has played 12 first-class games and scored three fifties.

Happy for the kid, but I really wish he'd just been left to try and develop his game in first class cricket for a bit longer. He's got an astonishing eye and wonderful ball strike ability, but as of yet no ability to really construct an innings, rotate the strike and defend when needed.

A very good talent and he should learn a lot being a part of RCB team with Kohli and ABD in it. Don't expect him do much this IPL though as he is still young and will not get into four overseas players for a mega team like RCB.

Gutted to see Phillipe not play, he is such a exciting player to watch.
Probably he didn't want to pay for base amount of 20lac
.The should have picked Devon Conway but Conway base price was 50Lac and we cant replace him with Phillipe's 20lac bracket.
Any how, Finn Allen is a very good attacking batsmen but not sure how he will perform on Asian pitches.
Our death bowling is more concern, this time we wont even qualify to playoffs.

I wanted to see Phillipe as well. I think he would have gotten game time this year as well.
RCB should have kept Morris. Jamieson doesn’t look like a death bowler. Kane Richardson will probably get a lot of game time as he is known for his death bowling.

Difficult chance put down by Rubel running back from mid-off.Allen sliced this slower delivery over mid-off, no power behind it whatsoever. He was looking to absolutely muscle that away.

Soumya puts down another, coming in from long-off. Tough chance though, did all the hard work in haring in and putting in a full-stretch dive but couldn't hold on. Allen was looking to muscle it away but didn't get power as he was cramped for room

He was going after every ball... that's going to happen, he needs to pick and choose but no doubt he has the talent to be excellent for us.
