ISLAMABAD: Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir termed Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) fitness camp to be useless and stated that it will not provide any assistance to the national side in England.

Qadir was of the opinion that the players should have been given more match practice. "Instead of the camp the PCB should have formed four teams and have conducted matches among them," he said.

"The best players should have been inducted in the playing eleven for the series against England and the second-best should have been kept as standbys."

The leggie claimed that the cricket board believes he criticises them without a reason but his criticism involves solutions. "Criticism while providing a solution is a great idea I think," he added.

"We are in dire need of improvement in batting and bowling. The camp will only improve the fitness of the players."

Qadir urged the building of two teams in the future.

'Top Pakistani cricketers not educated'
Commenting on PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan's remarks about a lack of education in cricketers being the reason behind the team's decline, Qadir said that top cricketers in the history of Pakistan were not educated.

"Hanif Muhammad, Mushtaq Muhammad, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Inzamam ul Haq, Younus Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar are some examples of the top players who were not very educated," he claimed.

'Shan Masood to do well in England'
Qadir said he has high hopes from opener Shan Masood in the series against England.

"Shan is said to be the fittest player in the PCB fitness camp which is very good for a player of his age, as his counterparts have failed to satisfy fitness trainers," he said.

'Head coach missing'

Talking about newly-appointed Head Coach Mickey Arthur, Qadir said that the board has gone ahead with the camp but the coach is yet to join the team.

"What can one expect from them [PCB]. The board is holding the camp for players and the head coach is missing from it."

So first he says that the fitness camp will only help players' fitness and not their skills, which need improvement, but then he backs Shan to do well in England.... because he's the fittest player at the camp? :danish

Don't disagree with all he is saying, though.

This guys become an old angry man

He bashes everything the Pcb does, if he really cares about Pak cricket then why doesn't he hold camps, work with youngsters or more importantly teach some sense in his son in law

He mentions the top players weren't educated but they still had good careers so who cares :))? Shan masood will do well because of fitness but the camp is useless he says :misbah. These guys just make media statements to stay relevant it seems

I dont understand some of these ex-players when they talk in the press. I do know there is always a hidden agenda but lets face it these were the individuals who are called "legends" of the game. The legends i have seen playing e.g. people like Sangakara, Ponting, Warne etc etc, they dont usually talk rubbish despite, i am sure, having personal favourites within their respective adminstration. But their cricketing logic always correct!

In case of Pakistan somehow these so-called "lengends" always end up saying stupid emotional stuff.. Qadir being one example. The worse part of all that is that media publishes it and here people like us discuss it 😩

Sometimes for the peace of my mind, i assume that these guys did have some brain when they played the game but now they talk all this non-sense may be because the age is catching-up with them!!

I think we should discourage such media reports and hope that our so called "modern" and "open" media people realise they have a big moral job to do within the society..

Remember a time when Greg Chappell made us do something similar lol imo that didn't end well. Still think Sports fitness is different from Defense one anyhow we will know in next 6 months how much it affected the team.

Fitness is very important and should be central to the development of the player. It needs to start at a young age, along with fielding.

I think a new thread is in order:

Count on one hand any Pakistani ex-cricketers who have conducted themselves with dignity after retirement. Additional points for not being on media talking about PCBs failings.

What kind of jealousy is this?

Fitness camps may or may not improve player performance immediately, but in the long term, will always help any player if he continues to take his fitness seriously. Never heard a sportsman say improving your fitness is a useless exercise. Cricket now a days is like any other sports, your skills matter as much as your fitness levels.
