Peshawar and the famous charsi tikka

Nostalgic Mamoon

Thanks, I saw this video earlier today. If I remember correctly, Mamoon once said the original charsi had passed away some years ago. I’m not sure if this guy is a descendant of the late lamented charsi or one of the many copycats, but he’s certainly emulating the original well enough, right down to the cigarette, which is probably “filled,” as they say.

Apparently the charsi dumba is also an aphrodisiac, which is one of its many benefits...

All these travelers are consuming the food more or less for free. Another one called Drew Binsky did an entire video on how he didn’t have to pay for anything:

Correct. At this point, it is almost impossible to identify the original once since they all make the same claim and have backstories to as well.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter. Whether you go to the original charsi, the fake ones or even the restaurants that don’t call themselves charsi, they taste the same.

The only thing that matters is whether you are a regular client or a one-off. They tend to keep their best meat for the people who show up over and over again.

Since there is no real recipe, it is all about the quality of meat that they serve you. This Food Ranger guy was one-off but he is a foreigner with a crew, so he definitely got the best available cut.

Pick anyone of them, go there 4-5 times and once the owner gets to know you, you will be treated like royalty.

Went to Pakistan a month ago and travelled to Peshawar for the first time just for some charsi, it was a good experience but the food was average.

Thankfully on the way back we went to Mardan, wazirgul Chapli Kebab. Although we were all full, these kebabs were the best kebabs we had ever tasted, may be the best thing we ever ate (excluding P F Chang's dynamite Shrimps). We were thoroughly impressed, we got lucky with the service as we got lost on the way and picked up a local boy to take us there, who could barely speak Urdu and we couldn't speak a word of Pushto. We insisted that he had food with us, so he made the order for us and told them in Pushto that we had travelled a long way to taste their kebabs, we were served within 10 minutes from a crowd of over 100 people. It was worth the journey and the hospitality of the people in KPK was extraordinary. I'll be making a trip to Mardan whenever I visit Pakistan again.
