LAHORE: Having captained Pakistan in the past will not guarantee top category central contract anymore following the abandonment of the relevant policy by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Previously, former skippers were automatic choices for A category contracts, but as per new rules, the coveted deals will be handed to only those who are top performers, have exemplary disciplinary records and also have an important role in the team.

According to a PCB official, the decision was made on the insistence of chief selector Inzamamul Haq who is also a member of board’s Central Contracts Selection Committee.

Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur, Director National Cricket Academy Mudassar Nazar and PCB’s General Manager International Cricket Usman Wahla are the others members of the body.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PCB had amended the criteria of selecting players in central contracts in 2014 in order to pave the way for veteran Younus Khan’s entry in A category after he refused to accept his demotion to B category.

The now-scrapped clause mentioned that any player who has played over 300 matches across the three formats of the game, and has captained in all three formats will be placed in category A.

Yousuf offered to join NCA as batting consultant

However, the aforementioned criteria will not be practiced in the future after Inzamam’s objection.

The PCB last month announced central contracts and handed A category to incumbent captains Misbahul Haq, Azhar Ali and Sarfraz Ahmed along with former captains Younus Khan, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, while leg-spinner Yasir Shah was the sole non-captaincy-related inclusion.

I think this is wrong.

Being a captain or an ex captain is a big privilege, and i think such people are entitled to high salaries.

Think about it. In a work force an ex leader making less then his new junior.

I dont like afridi, but if he made less the unar akmal in terms of salary then that doesnt look good

ur logic is poor, if someone only plays one format why should they get an A contract, no wonder why pcb is broke senor-ism and corruption

If a player can't look after finances of own then PCB shouldn't be responsible for them, central contracts are not welfare and shouldn't be handed out on previous performance. Contracts are on present performance and future

Because of attitude like this seniors are becoming burden day by day. Being Misbah's great fan you will never appreciate if a younger perform better and get more than a senior (keep failing and still in A category)

when did i said anything about playing one or two formats?

Being an ex captain should entitle you to a better salary. THats my POV

Only thing guaranteed is the place in playing eleven, even with a prolong run of low score.

LOL that view point is jokes ex captains should not get better treatment just because they were captains. the reason why they are ex captains is because they failed so why should they get better treatment

If you're a backup then you shouldn't in a higher tier than someone who is in the first XI for every game.

Yes, that i agree that stand in captains cannot hold the same value, but if you were an actual full time captain, then he deserves a rise in his pay checque

Deserves a rise when he's captain, deserves a pay cut when he's no longer a full time member of the first XI

is this why Hafeez always ended up with A contracts???

being an ex captain still makes you stand out and he deserves such a contract

problem is we have had so many captains that every second player is captain :)))

afridi, yk, malik, misbah, hafeez, azhar, sarfaraz since 2009

in 90s it was worse. Moin khan, wasim, Waqar, Amir sohail, ramiz raja, rashid latif, saleem malik were all captains at some point and playing with each other. Inzi too though he became when most had retired

thats the fault of PCB not the captains.

Also a T20 captain isn't really a same level captain as an ODI or Test one, so there needs to be some differentiation in that aswell.

if Umar Akmal is currently a better player than Afridi than he absolutes deserves to make more money, in fact he's earned it. And it wouldn't be fair to him or the taxpayers to keep paying someone else more money just because they're an ex-captain or seniors

who cares if it looks good- if you perform you get paid the top dollars, if you don't perform you deserve to get a paycut
