Former India paceman and Delhi captain Amit Bhandari was seriously injured when a group of men led allegedly by a Delhi Under-23 cricketer attacked him on Monday morning. Bhandari, who is currently the selector for Delhi, was conducting U-23 trials at St. Stephen’s College grounds in New Delhi when hockey stick-wielding goons barged into the stadium.

The goons attacked Bhandari for not shortlisting the player for the trials. He was part of 56 probables announced by the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) on January 28.

Bhandari, who turned out in two ODIs for India, sustained head and ear injuries and was taken to Sant Paramanand Hospital at Civil Lines by his colleague Sukhvinder Singh. The player along with one of the attackers have been detained by Delhi Police while they are looking for the other attackers.

DDCA president Rajat Sharma said immediate action will be initiated against the perpetrators.

“We are trying to procure all details of the incident. As far as I have come to know, it is regarding one disgruntled player, who didn’t make it to the probables list for the National U-23 tournament. The SHO from the local police station has reached St Stephen’s ground and I have personally spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik. The guilty will not go unpunished. I promise exemplary action against whoever is found involved. We will register an FIR,” Sharma told PTI.

CricketNext understands that Bhandari needed six stiches to his head and has also fractured his leg.

“Dedha has annoyed that he has not been picked for the Under-23 side. He was threatening Bhandari for a few days now. But it’s shocking the way they have attacked Bhandari. We have filed a police complaint already and strict action will be taken against all of them,” Delhi cricket committee member Siddharth Verma told CricketNext.

Delhi’s senior and U-23 team manager Shankar Saini also narrated the incident to PTI, saying, “I was having my meal along with a colleague inside the tent and Bhandari, along with other selectors and senior team coach Mithun Manhas, was watching the probables play a trial match.

“A couple of men first came and went up to Bhandari. There were heated exchanges between Bhandari and the two men. They left and before we could gather our thoughts, suddenly some 15 men armed with hockey sticks, rods and cycle chains came charging,” Saini said.

“When the other boys attending the trials along with us rushed to save Bhandari, they started threatening us and one of them said, ‘Don’t get into this or else we will shoot you.’ They hit Bhandari with hockey sticks and rods and he sustained a head injury,” the former Delhi seamer added.

Delhi is the most uncultured Indian city so i am not surprised.

I know whom you are referring to but we call them Delhi-Punjabis. They are a different breed and have little to no resemblance to resident Punjabis except for their common love for alcohol.

Delhi Punjabis, labour class from Bimaru states and muslims have ruined Delhi.

I will never understand why the heck (some) Punjabis (both Indians/Pakistanis I've met overseas) love alcohol so much. Of the Irish I get it, one can argue it's a cultural thing. But these Punjabis getting drunk is pathetic and has always puzzled me.

to OP: Gunda gardi still going on, even among professionals

Punjabis have ruined the beautiful city.

If anything they gave it's soul after 1947, the others states with their influx to enjoy the economy ruined it after 99.

Mind you this is the same Delhi where a movie used to release after an year from Mumbai now has movies being made specifically for Delhi, Punjabis worked hard from 47- 99 to get it to a point where all refugees went upward through hardworking.

Thanks I just remembered my childhood years when I used to love Dilli going there as a kid , it's finished now , everyone is tired of crime rate and immigration all those years of refugee families making it worth the stay is done.

The story of desi society.

Some physical conflicts happen and in comes the name calling of bihari, pinjabis, bengalis, North India, South India..... It's a shame.

You should read about Soma Rasa (to be probounced as Som Rass) to learn about the true origins of alcohol.

It is because of the Persian invadors that Indians lost the know-how to recreate the original Soma rasa - the divine drink of the Gods.

Thanks Sindhis, for not being to defend us.

Alcohol properly consumed can make one's life better. “I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me,” Winston Churchill once said. George Bush Jr. gave up drinking and later in life after he was elected President started the Iraq War based on lies from which half a million died. If he had kept drinking, he may not have become such a nasty fellow.

Lack of culture is lack of culture, with or without alcohol.

Delhi, contrary to assertions has not been ruined by "Delhi Punjabis, labour class from Bimaru states and muslims". It is still a city I love, the rudeness of some locals notwithstanding (you learn to live with it after a while). However the traffic is now horrendous. The economy keeps growing, leading to the number of cars keeping on increasing, while the roads remain the same :(

U-23 Cricketer gets life ban for assaulting Amit Bhandari with Iron Rods and Hockey Sticks!

Under-23 cricketer Anuj Dedha has been slapped with a life ban for assaulting Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) senior selection committee chairman Amit Bhandari. DDCA chief Rajat Sharma said on Wednesday that the association will impose a life ban on Anuj Dedha for physically assaulting Amit Bhandari, who is also a former India pacer. Anuj Dedha attacked Amit Bhandari for not selecting him in the U-23 state side.

"We are imposing a life ban on the player that attacked chief selector Amit Bhandari, apart from following all the legal procedures. He will be banned from all cricket activities," Rajat Sharma said at a press conference in New Delhi.

Bhandari was attacked by a group of people during the Under-23 state trials at St Stephens ground in New Delhi's Kashmere Gate on Monday.

Bhandari was hit with iron rods and hockey sticks at the trials, before being rushed to a hospital by his co-selector Sukhvinder Singh. The goons fled the spot before the police could arrive.

Bhandari got 7 stitches for cuts on his legs and head.

What on earth? This is typical of Delhi - especially Delhi cricket. Naturally, Sehwag and Gambhir have chimed in:
