Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif facing probe for laundering $4.9 billion to Indian Finance Ministry!

ISLAMABAD: In further trouble for Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's top anti-corruption body on Tuesday ordered a probe against the embattled former prime minister and others for allegedly laundering $4.9 billion to India, media reports said.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a press release said its Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal took notice of reports making rounds on news channels claiming that Sharif allegedly laundered $4.9 billion to India, the Express Tribune reported.

According to the media report, this incident is mentioned in the World Bank's Migration and Remittance Book 2016, the release said.

However, details of the media report in question have not been mentioned in the brief statement issued in Urdu, Geo Tv reported.
The statement claims that the amount was laundered to the Indian finance ministry after which Indian foreign exchange reserves witnessed an increase and Pakistan suffered as a result.

Sharif is facing three corruption cases at the accountability court following the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case. A NAB inquiry is also under way against him for alleged illegal expansion of a road leading to his estate in Lahore's Jati Umra locality.

Once formulated, this will be the fifth case against the ousted premier by the NAB.

Earlier today, the accountability court sought more time from the top court to end the trial on references filed by the NAB against members of the Sharif family.

Accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir, who presides over the hearings, has written a letter to the top court requesting for a second extension in the trial.

Earlier in March, the Supreme Court had granted a two-month extension to the accountability court to wrap the proceedings.

However, as the two-month deadline expires, the case is nowhere near its end, with the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments still untouched, the country's top anti-graft body is running out of time.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had disqualified Sharif last year, forcing the three-time prime minister to resign. Sharif has dismissed the corruption charges as politically motivated.

The political future of Sharif, who leads the country's most powerful political family and his party, has been hanging in the balance since then. If convicted, he can be jailed.

EVER so often an absurd piece of information tends to go viral and sparks theory construction on an epic scale. Most recently there is the example of a report, hosted on the World Bank website, which uses a model based on the stock of migrants in each country and their income levels to try and generate a guess about how much they would send back in remittances to their country of origin. The model mistakenly included all migrants from India who settled in Pakistan after Independence in its calculation and came up with the figure of $4.9bn as an estimate of the remittances they would be sending back to India. Since the report was hosted on the World Bank website, people took the number seriously. One television anchor even floated a conspiracy theory around this figure, fuelling all manner of lurid speculation about the reality behind this number. The research presenting this data was released in December 2015, and has lived on in the media, rumour mills and social media space ever since, periodically popping up couched in astonishing claims.

Unfortunately for those who were partaking of this spectacle, the only reality behind this number is that it does not exist. It is a flawed guess because those who migrated from India and became Pakistani citizens after 1947 do not send back remittances. This absurd saga reached such proportions that the State Bank has just had to issue a formal denial of the figure and present the real remittance flows that go from Pakistan to India. Last year, this figure was $116,000. The speed with which such ungrounded information can spread says something about the willingness, or desire, of people to believe it. For years, another absurd number circulated suggesting that $200bn of Pakistani money was parked in Swiss Bank accounts, when the real figure was actually one-hundredth of that. These sorts of myths get sucked up very fast in our political culture which is saturated with disinformation and conspiracy theories as it is. Even when the absurdity of the figure is revealed, many people continue to argue in favour of its veracity because they have internalised it deeply and built large castles in their minds with its imagined implications. It is important that such disinformation not be allowed to circulate for very long, because its effects can go beyond humour and become pernicious the longer they survive unchallenged.

Its ridiculous how blinded sided people get, they are talking about $5B, as if Nawaz wire $500k to India, you got to use a little math in your head. No matter who you are, PM or CNC or God himself, you just cannot do such a thing, world does not work that way.

There is a big diff between $200 B Vs $2B of Pakistani money in Swiss Banks, I still doubt if $2B is entirely accurate. People are cooking up lot more money than there actually is in the country, ridiculous level of exaggeration

This is confirmation that NS actually did send $4.9B to India. It is well known that migrants from India to Pakistan after partition were lured by promises made by the Sharif family (grandparents of NS) who took their money on the pretense of sending it to their families back in India whereas they actually deposited it into a BJP-controlled shell account. Where do you think BJP gets money to win all these elections?

Addressing a press conference at the party office in Model Town, Mr Sharif said if a decision in the corruption references came before the date (July 25) of general elections it would amount to desecration of the law. “My fundamental rights are being violated as I am being deprived of the services of a lawyer,” he said, adding that an environment was created in which no lawyer was willing to take up his case without being given time for preparation and being compelled to appear in court on weekends too.

Earlier when the accountability court asked the ousted premier if he wanted to engage a new lawyer or convince his team of lawyers led by Advocate Khwaja Haris to take back their decision to recuse themselves from pleading the case, Mr Sharif sought time to respond.

Mr Sharif, however, refused to take questions during the press conference which was also attended by his daughter Maryam Nawaz, former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Raja Zafarul Haq, Senator Pervaiz Rashid and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif.
