PARIS (Reuters) - France’s foreign ministry has demanded Pakistan authorities withdraw comments made by one of its ministers that President Emmanuel Macon was treating Muslims like Nazis had treated Jews in World War 2.

The comments posted on Twitter by Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari on Saturday came as part of a clash between Pakistan and France over the publication of images of the Prophet Mohammad by a French magazine. The images have sparked anger and protests in the Muslim world, especially in Pakistan.

“Macron is doing to Muslims what the Nazis did to the Jews - Muslim children will get ID numbers (other children won’t) just as Jews were forced to wear the yellow star on their clothing for identification,” Mazari said in a tweet linking to an online article.

In a follow-up tweet on Sunday, Mazari doubled down on her claims following a condemnation by France’s foreign ministry late on Saturday.

“These hateful words are blatant lies, imbued with an ideology of hatred and violence. Such slander is unworthy of this level of responsibility. We reject them with the greatest firmness,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes von der Muhll said, adding that Paris had informed the Pakistan embassy of its strong condemnation of the comments.

“Pakistan must rectify these remarks and return to the path of a dialogue based on respect.”

Pakistan’s parliament at the end of October passed a resolution urging the government to recall its envoy from Paris, accusing Macron of “hate-mongering” against Muslims.

Macron had paid tribute to a French history teacher who was beheaded by an 18-year-old man of Chechen origin for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a class on freedom of speech.

French officials have said the beheading was an assault on the core French value of freedom of expression.

After satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo re-published the cartoons in September, Macron said the freedom to blaspheme went hand in hand with the freedom of belief in France.

Macron is showing how inexperienced he is in politics.

He has been very sloppy lately.

Lol Nazi symbolism is banned in France and they try to justify Muslim hate using freedom of speech, hypocrisy at its finest on display.

Why does the minister want to pick a fight with one of the most powerful countries in the world? Stupid foreign policy to the detriment of Pakistan.

Don't feed haters. The fact that there is a country called Pakistan and its very existence since 14/08/1947 is a torture for these haters.

I firmly believe, Pakistan's enemy was never India, Israel etc. it's always been traitor thieves who opposed the very idea of Pakistan and their leech present/future generations.

PS: Macron is an idiot. Trump, who isn't even a politician by trade, wipes floor with this clown.

Are the French secularist parents ok with this?

Well done Pakistan, France cannot tell Pakistanis what to say, we are a nuclear power so they cant think of bombing us as they did with Libya etc.

the french..oh dear..just google what they make many african countries do with regards to their reserve bank..this is a robber baron nation pretending to be respectable..

From calling Modi Hitler to comparing RSS and the French government to Nazis, the PTI government loves WWII references.

I wonder what do they think of the Muslim re-education camps in Xinjiang China. Do they not remind the PTI WWII historians of the Nazi concentration camps?

All these references to Nazi Germany are Imran's slaps to Iran for repeatedly denying holocaust. These are also indirect friendly gestures and validation of the state of Israel. Pakistan doesn't need Trump to broker a deal with Israel. Imran can do it craftily. In 20 years when ordinary Pakistanis start reading about holocaust for the first time in their text books, Israel and Pakistan would have already been diplomatic partners. This is all a crafty prep for the impending great friendship. Nazi-Bad, so holocaust-bad, so Israel-good and hence friendship-good. True statesman.

How does calling nazis and Holocaust bad makes state of Israel legitimate? Kindly elaborate.

The biggest crime the Nazis committed was the holocaust. World powers after WW2 on the Jewish insistence backed the idea of a jewish state so they aren't scattered across the world. Hence the state of Israel was formed based on the historical evidence and the circumstances back then. So calling Nazis and holocaust bad and evil is supporting the israeli cause

Lol what happened to freedom of speech? France is just run by hypocrites.

Macron is a fool and a hypocrite. France is one of the most racist, Islamophobic and antisemitic countries of all. Hopefully the French people send Macron packing next year when they have a chance to vote.

Thank god we're out of the EU.

Interestingly there were Europe-wide polls taken on racism and homophobia last month, and despite all of the “Little Englander” talk, the UK had statistically the most welcoming and accepting views outside of Scandinavia. The rest of the EU is full of intolerance, bigotry and discrimination. And the worst ranked country of all in these polls? France.

I wouldn't be surprised if Le Penn wins the next elections.

Hungary are not far from France, and I would add Poland to the list too.

Yes. They were ranked pretty badly as well.

Interestingly the EU cheerleaders always claim that Poland and/or Hungary are on the verge of being expelled by the Union due to their racism, homophobia and bigotry. But it never quite happens.

If Hungary/Poland are expelled it will mark the first time an EU member is expelled signalling the beginning of the end for EU for sure. Interestingly neither has adopted the Euro currency which ironically makes it easier for the two to be expelled.

What’s all this about French children and ID numbers?

Lol what happened to freedom of speech? France is just run by hypocrites.

“Freedom of speech” does not mean “tell lies about another country without upsetting them”.

It means, for example, that I could write a letter to the newspapers saying “Boris Johnson is incompetent” and not get disappeared by security forces and never heard of again.

That is because there is no legal mechanism to expel an EU member state, though voting and representation rights could be suspended by the Council of Ministers until an errant state falls into line.
