G.W. Bush says media crucial to "hold people like me to account," warns power is "very addictive"

Early on in the exclusive sit-down, the former president expressed a clear-eyed support for the news media, saying a free press was "indispensable to democracy."

"We need an independent media to hold people like me to account," Bush told TODAY'S Matt Lauer.

"Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power."

Bush was asked about the media's role in light of President Donald Trump's recent characterization of the media as the "enemy of the American people." He noted he spent a lot of time during his two terms trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to embrace an independent press.

"It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves," he said.

Bush also addressed the controversy over Trump advisers and the role they may have played in the scandal involving Russian hackers who tried to intervene in the election, saying he would leave questions about whether a special prosecutor should investigate up to the Senate intelligence committee leaders.

“I think we all need answers,” he said, going to on praise North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, the head of the U.S. Senate intelligence committee. “I’m not sure the right avenue to take. I am sure, though, that that question needs to be answered."

Bush, the last Republican to occupy the White House, also was asked about President Trump's controversial executive order that banned immigrants from predominantly Muslim nations.

Asked pointedly if he favored or opposed the policy, Bush said, "I am for an immigration policy that is welcoming and upholds the law."

Bush won the 2000 presidential election after one of the most contentious and controversial decisions in American history. He took office after a divided Supreme Court ruled over a dispute involving a contested recount in Florida.

Bush also returned to the show to discuss his new book, "Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors," a collection of portraits of some of the military veterans he has met.

Proceeds of the book will be donated to the George W. Bush Presidential Center, a non-profit organization that helps post-Sept. 11 veterans and their families make successful transitions to civilian life.

"I want to sell a lot of books to raise money for helping our vets," he said, expressing "great pride" in getting to know the veterans he featured in the book, including four who appeared with him on TODAY.

Bush noted that many of the veterans he met used peer-to-peer counseling in their healing process, a process that allowed them to open up about their wounds that weren't always visible.

"It starts with ...vets saying, 'I’ve got a problem.' There’s a lot of denial because there’s a stigma. So our message is, it’s courageous to talk about it and seek help," he said.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Rodriguez, who suffered a traumatic brain injury while deployed overseas, said Bush's outreach to veterans, which included inviting them to his Texas ranch home, inspired him to do the same.

"When I saw that he reached out and he opened his heart and home to us, in the caring way that President Bush does, it inspired me to try to connect with people as well," he said.

The portraits are also currently on display as part of an exhibition at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.

Sorry George, writing a book for charity and inviting a few wounded veterans to your house is not going to make up for the 4,424 dead and 31,952 wounded in action (WIA) American servicemen and women as a result of Operation Iraqi Freedom, ie your illegal war.

You know times are bad when G.W seems like a voice of reason.

True. But he is at least honest about his mistakes. He was never known for his intelligence anyway.:))

Trump is somehow on the path of outdoing this clown.

The voter base has truly gone above and beyond this time. :))

He's never admitted that he made a mistake in starting that illegal war.

He has admitted to intelligence failure and called that a 'regret' of his.

The premise of the invasion was wrong but it was a just war.

Which war? Invasion of Afghanistan was justifiable but the Iraq war was anything but.

Who says it was a just war? Apart from Bush, Blair and their ilk that is. Besides, 'regret' is not the same as admitting that one has made a mistake.

As for Bush admitting to 'intelligence failures', that's just an attempt to shift the blame. Blair and Bush wanted regime change, and the only 'intelligence' they wanted was anything that they could use to justify their war. So if there were 'intelligence failures' then Bush is trying to say that the intelligence agencies failed to find any evidence to back his decision to invade Iraq.

Dubya loves the media so much he even wanted to bomb the Al-J HQ in Qatar during the Iraq war.

It's remarkable how he's turned his image around into some sort of innocent and sweet grandad figure who simply spends his life painting and doing charity work.

Trump may be a bigoted buffoon but I think he'll leave office having less innocent blood on his hands than the likes of Bush (and even Obama).

Is that why you tapped the phones of journalists Bushy ? Didn't have much respect for the freedom of the press then.

Brian Ross and Richard Esposito of ABC News reported on May 15, 2006, that senior federal law enforcement officials had informed them that the government was tracking the phone numbers of journalists without the journalists’ knowledge as part of an effort to root out the journalists’ confidential sources.

Intelligence failure my foot. Anyone who's done even a cursory reading of the subject knows how much of a phoney defence this is. Its documented from former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell and many others that the White House, especially Dick Cheney, pressured the CIA to come up with conclusions that fit their narrative about Saddam and WMDs.

What's worse is that on many occasions, Bush and Cheney made categorical assertions about Saddam and WMDs when the intelligence services were clear the evidence was far from certain.

In an August 2002 speech that kicked off the administration's campaign for war against Iraq, Cheney asserted, "Simply stated, there's no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us." But earlier in the year, Vice Adm. Thomas Wilson, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, had told Congress that Iraq possessed only "residual" amounts of WMD. There was no confirmed intelligence at this point establishing that Saddam had revived a major WMD operation.

As Cheney made this claim, Anthony Zinni, a former commander in chief of US Central Command, was on the stage. He was stunned to hear Cheney say that Iraq was actively pursuing WMD. As he later recalled, "It was a shock. It was a total shock. I couldn't believe the vice president was saying this, you know? In doing work with the CIA on Iraq WMD, through all the briefings I heard at Langley, I never saw one piece of credible evidence that there was an ongoing program." In other words, bad intelligence did not cause Cheney to make this categorical, bold, and frightening statement. He just did it.

The Bush Admin also repeatedly linked Saddam and Al Qaeda especially in the wake of 9/11 which the intelligence analysts knew was a preposterous claim. The 9/11 Commission concluded, there had been no intelligence confirming significant contacts between Iraq and Al Qaeda. Once again, Bush and Cheney were not being fooled by flawed intelligence; they were were pushing disinformation.

The butcher of Middle East. Media basically helped sell his war in Iraq, repercussions of which are being felt to this day after a million and more dead.

Rare informed celebrity

The American media is what controls everything. they are the ones who tell the world how Iraq had WMD insisting the military attack and occupy it.

A very good summary of what happened prior to the start of the Iraq War.

This is a great article by Mehdi.

After the Iraq war nobody takes the Western world seriously or believes they are a force of good.

Bush is plain evil along with his buddy Bliar.

" more than 100 Pakistani children killed by 51 CIA drone strikes authorized by Bush between 2004 and the start of 2009"

In those days the President needed to authorise each drone strike. Bush said ok to killing hundreds of Pakistanis including children. In an ideal world Bush would be tried for war crimes and in an even more iedal world sent to Pakistan to put on trial and if found guilty hanged.
