Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville has been named as Valencia's head coach until the end of the season.

The 40-year-old, who will take charge officially on Sunday, will remain part of the England coaching set-up.

Peter Lim, Valencia's Singaporean owner, has a stake in Salford City, the non-league club co-owned by Neville.

His brother Phil, who joined the Spanish club as assistant manager in July, will stay on the coaching staff.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity with Valencia," the new head coach said.

"Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing - and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans."

Neville, who has stepped down from his position as a Sky Sports pundit with immediate effect, will attend a news conference with club president Layhoon Chan on Thursday.

Chan said of Neville: "He is hugely respected in English football and it was his personal qualities which persuaded us that he was the right choice to lead Valencia until the end of the season."

Neville's brother Phil will assist interim head coach Voro for Valencia's next two matches, away to third-tier side Barakaldo in the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday and at home to Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday.

Next Wednesday's Champions League home match against Lyon will be Neville's first match in charge.

England head coach Roy Hodgson said: "As far as I'm concerned, this will be an extra string to his bow and the experience he will gain working in the Spanish league can only be beneficial to our work together with the England team.

"Gary's commitment to the FA's preparations for Euro 2016 will not be in any way affected by the fact that he will be coaching abroad during the next five months."

Neville replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who resigned after Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Sevilla, a result that left Valencia ninth in the Spanish league.

The club finished fourth last season, but have won only five of their opening 13 league matches this term.

Interesting appointment by Valencia. I believe that he has all the makings of being a top class manager.

Still he's going to face problems at Valencia like Moyes had with Real Sociedad. But overall good for British football that the managers are getting foreign exposure.Same should be with their players

He wants to join the race with Giggs for the next manager at Old Trafford.

I believe he will get the England job, while Giggs will land the Man Utd job.

I was kinda sad to hear the news. He was a brilliant pundit at Sky and I will miss him on MNF. Anyway, I hope he does well and make all of us Red Devils proud.

anyone reading twitter regarding phil neville, some off the tweets are hilarious.

So phil is in charge for the barca game come Saturday and gary takes over.

Can he even speak Spanish?, believe he will become a good manager but only in England, taking Valencia as his first post is risky, as they are still challenging for 4th spot- 5points off it.

good luck to him, top pundit

He's an excellent pundit on MNF but its one thing to talk the talk analysing matches with the benefit of hindsight on TV and another to actually a lead a football club and take care of its day to day operations including training, transfer business, overseeing the youth setup etc.

He wouldn't have got this job without his business connections with Peter Lim who's the owner of Valencia. Lim's taking a big risk appointing a manager with no prior experience and the club has been a mess recently.

Still hope he does well, he speaks intelligently about the game and if goes into management in England he'd be more a progressive coach than the usual TTFs like Allardyce, Hughes, Bruce etc.

What a flop he has been so far.

Just goes to show it's easy to stand in a studio and pick faults in managers and their tactics. When you have to do it yourself, it's a different ball game.

Well one month is never enough to judge. However it was always going to be difficult for an Englishman managing a bunch of Spanish players when they have no way to communicate other then use a translator.

I dont know why he took the job, but i have no doubt he would become a good manager in the EPL.

Good learning experience for him ahead of a probable Premier League job in the future.

He is probably going to get sacked soon though.

Not surprised. Most good players end up being rubbish managers. Neville should come back to Sky soon. We miss his brilliant punditry.

Use to be one of my favourites in the EPL growing up as a kid. Paul Scholes, Garry Neville, Henry, Shearer, Beckam, Pirez, Zola, Rude Vanisteroy, bah gawd Adil_94 those were the days

Former England footballer Gary Neville has joined the Labour Party and is not ruling out a venture into politics.

The ex-Manchester United captain was publicly welcomed to the party by shadow cabinet ministers Lucy Powell and Anneliese Dodds.

Neville told the BBC's Political Thinking podcast he had joined Labour "in the last few days".

When asked if he would run for public office, the 46-year-old said: "I'm not saying never."

However, asked by Nick Robinson whether he would consider running for mayor of Greater Manchester when Andy Burnham's term ends, Neville said: "I'm not sure that would be for me to be honest."

The football pundit, who co-owns League Two side Salford City FC, said he thought he would get "eaten alive" in Westminster.

"I'm able to communicate, I know what I want, I have got a business mind, I can manage people in respect of businesses," he added.

"I can only imagine what you have to do there [Westminster] to survive and I don't play the game, so how can I get in?

"So, when I ask myself the question do you want to dip your toes in, I can't dip my toes in because I'm all or nothing. I go in and I'm going in."

Welcoming Neville, Ms Powell, who is shadow secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport, tweeted she was "very pleased" and backed him if he decided to go into politics.

"It's something he and I have been discussing for a while," she said.

While Ms Dodds tweeted to Neville: "Great to have you on the red team."

Neville has been a frequent critic of the government, often voicing his frustration on Twitter.

On Friday, amid the latest Downing Street party allegations, he said that No 10 should be renamed "Hacienda", in reference to the famous Manchester nightclub.

Good on him.

He should stand as a MP in Manchester. I think he’ll be a success.

I’m already anticipating a typically insightful and eccentrically delivered maiden speech from Neville in the House of Commons in 2024.
