Pakistan International Shahzad Signs for Worcestershire
Worcestershire County Cricket Club are delighted to confirm the signing of Pakistan International bowler Khurram Shahzad, on a deal that will see him join the club next month and be available to play in all formats until the completion of the season.
Since debuting in 2023, the 25-year-old medium fast bowler has caught the eye, taking career best figures of 6-90 against Bangladesh, during their series last Summer.
Known as an effective exponent of swing bowling, Shahzad, will bolster the Worcestershire bowling attack, with 20 wickets to his name across his six-test matches on the international scene.
It was former Worcestershire player and fan favourite, Azhar Ali, who played a key role in the signing, as he recommended the club take a closer look at the exciting right-arm bowler.
Shahzad expressed his delight at signing for the Pears and his eagerness to get started with his new teammates.
“Joining a club like Worcestershire and getting the chance to enhance my skills, is something I am really excited by.
“I have always had ambitions to play in England, so this was a chance I was desperate to take.
“There is a lot of history at the club, but I am ready to get involved as soon as I can and hopefully help the team have a strong second-half of the season.
“I can’t wait to get started and hopefully contribute across all the different formats.”
In addition to his red-ball prowess, the seamer will be available for selection in both the Metro Bank One Day Cup and Vitality T20 Blast, adding depth to Head Coach, Alan Richardson’s, bowling armoury.
Shahzad has recently featured in the Pakistan Super League, representing Quetta Gladiators, whom he recently helped reach the PSL Final, having previously played for Peshwar Zalmi.
Richardson explained the significance of signing a player with international pedigree for the second-half of the summer.
“Khurram is a fantastic signing for the club, we are thrilled to have someone with his experience and skillset on board with us.
“Not only will he give us tremendous option with his ability to swing the ball and bowl in excess of 80mph on a regular basis – his experience around the dressing room with some of the younger bowlers will be invaluable.
“We always look to strengthen in the right areas, but importantly, with the right people that will fit our environment.
“I have no doubts he will be a really positive asset to us, so we look forward to his arrival and helping him to hit the ground running.
Shahzad, will be available for selection from 4th July, when the Rapids travel to Headingly to face Yorkshire in the Vitality T20 Blast.
