What is going on?

Over a decade ago the PCB whilst nursing a grievance against its star fast bowler briefed the media that he had been treated for an incurable sexually transmitted infection.

Today the former Chairman of the PCB has informed the world that a recent international batsman has epilepsy.

Has Pakistan tumbled to the point where such breaches of medical confidentiality are not a criminal offence?

Are the players so disenfranchised that they do not have a union which cuts off all cooperation with the PCB for such unacceptable behaviour?

The PCB appears to be out of control, and its office bearers appear to be of an extraordinarily low calibre.

After all, it’s only yesterday that we learned about the appalling history of how the “retired judge” in the Umar Akmal case came to briefly obtain and then lose his seat on the Supreme Court bench.

Is Wasim Khan going to ignore these appalling transgressions?

Am I the only one suspicious of the epilepsy? Remember his weird selfie video at some nightclub or concert party? He’s clearly exposed himself to flashing lights multiple times in the last ten years. Not exactly something someone with epilepsy would deliberately do on such a frequent basis, even if it’s mild

He had an epileptic episode in 2013 in the Cpl. Even Johnty Rhodes reached out to him for support as he dealt with it himself during his career

The PCB is out of control because of the sayings of a former employee?

Just commented about this in the Sethi thread before I even saw this. It's sad how lightly patient confidentiality is taken in Pakistan

Can any resident Pakistani comment on data breach regulations in Pakistan?

Data protection act and now GDPR is huge in the UK and can lead an organisation to get into trouble. Employees can also get dismissed if they disclose confidential medical records to the public unless you can argue somehow that it’s in the public interest. This is why western leaders in private and public organisations are so good at ‘strategic leaks’ and then not confirming or denying has the desired effect.

Now zulqarnain revealing that umer told him to under perform just after trio fiasco in 2010. Dont know why you are supporting these corrupt players. If anything PCB is not giving harsh punishment despite knowing everything and they dont disclose facts in corruption cases where they know the particular player is good enough to serve in future.

He's not bound by any kind of confidentiality in discussing something that is already public knowledge.

It was a disgrace that PCB released this information in a press release. Totally inept behaviour by a Sports Board.

OP, who was the Star Fast bowler?

Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhter or Waqar Younis? I am curious, slight hint would be sufficient enough :danish

Dont think Akhtar forgot that!

===

Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has said he considered suing the Pakistan cricket management for revealing, in a public statement, the skin ailment that forced him to miss last month's World Twenty20. The PCB's statement on his fitness ahead of the tournament in England said Akhtar had been diagnosed with genital viral warts; he was subsequently removed from the squad.

"I kept quiet because I have a central contract and didn't want to offend the PCB, but I could have sued the Pakistan team management," Akhtar said in a TV programme on Express News. "I didn't want the Pakistan team to suffer because my news is published all over the world."

Akhtar belongs to category A of the PCB's centrally contracted players, who are barred from openly criticising the cricket board's decisions.

The injury-prone fast bowler last played a Test in 2007, against India, before he was sidelined for 14 months with fitness and disciplinary problems. He made two unimpressive comebacks to international cricket this year - in the one-day series at home against Sri Lanka, and the five ODIs and lone Twenty20 against Australia in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Akhtar, however, believes he can still get back to his best.

"There's still three-four good years left in me," he said. "I am the fastest bowler in history and it's not possible for everyone to bowl at 150 (kph)."

He also said he felt shortening his run-up - as suggested by former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer - would not prolong his career. "It doesn't suit me," Akhtar said. "My run-up is my speed, previously (in cricket) nobody has bowled as fast as I have bowled."

Akhtar believed he could have been picked for the ongoing three-Test series away to Sri Lanka as he had regained full fitness. "I am perfectly fine now and I can play five-day matches, why not?" he said. "But it depends on which tour suits me. Had they [selectors] considered me for the Sri Lanka series only, then I could have told you whether it suited me. If they considered me for two Test matches out of three I could have considered it."

So someone from PCB leaked that Zahid mehmood has a fear of flying

This is disgusting stuff from the PCB, they don't understand they've committed huge felonies by sharing the personal health issues of their players/employees. People in Pakistan may not care about ethic but hopefully Pakistani players can unionize and sue the PCB for violating HIPAA (or its equivalent in Pakistan), the PCB are just taking advantage of exploiting the players for the lack of education and awareness.

I don't think there is a Hipaa equivalent in sub continent and I also don't think any laws of confidentiality goes beyond the doctors and medical professionals themselves

I doubt fear of flying comes under confidentiality on its own and I think a lot of people admit this anyway. This would likely fall under the umbrella of anxiety in medical terms and records. A medical professional could maybe confirm this.

Something like this would probably come out anyway due to international travel. I remember when Arsenal and Dennis Bergkamp had to admit this when he couldn't travel to some away games in Europe because of the same issue.
