RIP thoughts with the family, am sure liverpool fans will have some fond memories
Very sad news. Houllier got Liverpool competing again. As likeable as Roy Evans was and despite the attractive football played - Liverpool were falling further behind the top.
Houllier was seen as the man to introduce more defensive steel into the team and drag the club into the 21st Century in training methods, diet and data.
Some never accepted him - the first foreign manager who adopted a dour style of play at a club known for pass and move football. However the 2001 Treble meant Houllier's position was undisputable.
After a major heart operation in 2001, Houllier became a shell of a man as anyone would've been. His last two seasons were disappointing, and he became increasingly combative. There were a string of poor signings. However he ensured CL qualification which made the Istanbul triumph possible.
He was a thorough gentleman and his contributions not only to Liverpool but French football will not be forgotten. RIP.

The Frenchman managed the Reds from 1998-2004 and led them to five major trophies, including the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup treble in 2000-01.
Prior to Liverpool, Houllier managed Lens, Paris St-Germain and the French national team, and after leaving the Reds won two Ligue 1 titles at Lyon.
His last managerial job was at Aston Villa, but he left in 2011 after nine months, following heart problems.
In a statement, Liverpool said they were "deeply saddened" by Houllier's death.
"We are mourning the passing of our treble-winning manager, Gerard Houllier," the club said.
"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Gerard's family and many friends."

Gerard Houllier had a transformative impact on Liverpool, changing the culture at the club and restoring success, says his former player Jamie Carragher.
The Sky Sports pundit saw first hand how the Frenchman made key changes to the way players at Liverpool approached the game and describes Houllier as a key influence on his own career.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Carragher paid tribute to the work and achievements of Houllier at Liverpool - which he says have sometimes been underestimated by people outside of the club - and also praised the personality of the man with whom he shared a close bond.
"He was a great man. It wasn't just the manager, the job he did for Liverpool and other clubs, the influence he had on what the French did in the 1998 World Cup win, but what he did for me, Stevie [Gerrard], Michael Owen, Danny Murphy, when he first came in. I don't think I, or any of those lads or anyone else involved in the club, will ever forget what he did for us. He meant so much to us all, really.

Steven Gerrard says he is finding it "really hard to come to terms" with the death of "special man" Gerard Houllier, his former Liverpool manager, aged 73.
The Rangers manager said "yesterday was a really tough day" for himself and assistant Gary McAllister.
Both played under the Frenchman while he was manager at Anfield.
"Gerard obviously played a huge part in both our careers - and also our lives," Gerrard said. "He was more than just a manager. A caring man, a loving man."
Gerrard was given his Liverpool debut by Houllier in November 1998, five months after the former France head coach arrived at Liverpool, while McAllister was signed from Coventry City two years later.
