It's been a very tough week for my beloved Islamabad United team, where I am the head coach for this year's Pakistan Twenty20 Super League. It was only a year ago that we won the first PSL with a team that I was so proud of, but after the recent events, we have been to hell and back.

It's very difficult to describe the kaleidoscope of emotions you go through as a coach when you have just won a premiership. You do not know who to hug first, who to cry with and who to thank. There is a permanent bond with your players when you win something this big. It was one of the greatest highlights I have experienced in my cricketing career.

Only a fortnight ago, our team was dealt a major blow when the best T20 player in the world, Andre Russell, was banned for one year for a doping-whereabouts violation. I basically picked my team around him – I think he is that good – so I had to organise a new game plan quickly.

One of my favourite sporting quotes is from former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson: "Everybody has a game plan until they get punched in the mouth."

Well, after a gutsy first-up win against Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United were given the worst punch in the mouth. Only 12 hours after our great win I was urgently called in to speak to our director of cricket, cricketing icon Wasim Akram, and our owner, Ali Naqvi. They told me that two of our most senior players – Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif – were provisionally suspended for alleged involvement in corruption. I felt like I was about to vomit. Wasim and I were almost in tears. We had invested so much time to get these two boys into form and playing for Pakistan.

Then our beloved captain Misbah-ul-Haq arrived and he was given the news. Misbah's immediate response is one I will never forget. He just froze. His face and body looked like the life had been drained out of it. He could barely breathe, let alone speak.

We don't know the full facts of the matter concerning Sharjeel and Khalid and no doubt it will come out in time. We weren't told anything about what had transpired from the Pakistan Cricket Board or the anti-corruption unit of the International Cricket Council. Just that both players had been provisionally suspended for breaches of code of behaviour.

I could sense something coming during the end of our first match versus Peshawar. Brad Haddin just made a brilliant knock of 73 and the World Anti-Doping Agency burst into the rooms and targeted Haddin and two other boys for drug testing while the match was in progress. We won the match, then four guys in suits looking like police detectives came into our dressing room and escorted Sharjeel, Khalid and Irfan to interview rooms. Their bags and phones were also confiscated.

Our players were oblivious to it as many were still outside celebrating our great win. We have a huge squad of 19 players and nine staff and even while we were travelling back to the hotel from the ground, no one asked Wasim or me about the whereabouts of three senior players.

Wasim and I couldn't sleep a wink when we got to our hotel at 3am. I still have no idea what the boys are supposed to have done. Our staff has put so much time and effort into these boys. They have been lectured by our staff and the anti-corruption unit on the fact that if they are approached by anyone they must notify the anti-corruption unt. They also have been lectured by our staff, PCB and WADA on what they can and cannot take.

At 6pm the next day, we had an emergency meeting. The owner and I had to tell the team that Sharjeel and Khalid had been provisionally suspended and Mohammad Irfan was being questioned. The team was in utter disbelief. You could hear a pin drop as they sat with heads bowed in disappointment.

We wanted the team to speak, to just say how they were feeling, from senior players to the junior boys. It felt like our two best mates had died and we had no idea what was going on with poor old Irfan.

What's more, we had a game to play the next day. I got no sleep again, but the sun came up and I knew I had to prepare these boys for a big match against Lahore. Win this and we were only one win away from qualifying for the finals.

At 4pm, I held a team meeting and I wanted to talk about how we were going to deal with the sadness within the group.

Wasim spoke with so much passion. He talked about the tragic passing of his wife seven years ago and how he tried to cope with the pain. Wasim spoke of his shock and how he told his two boys that their mother had just died. He thought he could just lay there and hope the sadness would pass. He knew he had to move on but how? It was a gut-wrenching, emotional talk for seven minutes to players he loves.

We went through the game plan, but I knew we were not ready. Just before the meeting ended, we got the tremendous news that Irfan was cleared and was allowed to play. But how could I play him after what he had just gone through? So I rested him.

We were all over the place physically and emotionally and the match reflected it. We got punched up again. We needed to get the team out of our hotel and go to our owners' hotel and enjoy each other's company again. Talk again. Laugh at each others' jokes again.

This is a time I want our senior guys such as Misbah, Haddin, Shane Watson, Sam Badree and Dwayne Smith to guide our team through these murky waters.

We are the mates of these players and we will stand next to them and help them through this awful time. But I applaud the PCB and the ICC on how they have handled this matter. It acted swiftly and with authority. As a coach and as a team, we have been delivered terrible news. Since last week, I have also been attacked by former Pakistani players claiming that I had, in the past, been found guilty of association with a bookmaker, which was completely false. But we will cope, because we have to. We are a proud team who will upheld the great traditions of the game we love.

Every sport has to deal with this cancer of corruption. We all must remain vigilant to maintain the integrity of the sport. While many coaches and staff try to keep our game clean, I find it hard to swallow that many cricket boards around the world have got commercial partnerships with online betting companies and it's advertised all over the ground. The hypocrisy of it all! And we are the ones who have to pick up the pieces.

Damn this is so sad. I kind of want IU to do well after reading this.

Deano had really put in a lot of effort with sharjeel and latief and you could see that they had improved a lot after the last PSL. What a shame that all ghis effort has gone down the drain.

Psl is something emotional by the COACH'S PERSPECTIVE,

unlike the other leagues, the team coaches are excited and celebrate each of the moments in the match, it gives me a glimpse of MANAGER vs MANAGER in football.

Disgraceful. Anyone know who accused Deano? Even if it was true, it's completely uncalled for.

Good insight from Deano. Now he's experiencing first hand the madness of our cricket.

To actually read this and realise the impact it has on the players is eye-opening.

Someone should read this word by word to Sharjeel and Khalid.

please don't jump to conclusions, nothing has been proved yet !

Seems like plenty of proof given the statements from Sethi, Shahryar and others.

Unless you know differently.

There is the idea of optimism but this is a little too far-fetched

Look the only proof that PCB has is that sharjeel met the booky, but they don't know if he accepted the offer or not (which is why this case is taking so long and both sethi and khan are making contradicting statements). Hopefully sharjeel rejected it and instead of a ban, he is just punished with a heavy fine.

Wow fantastic read.

Full respect to Deano for what he's done for the duo, only for these idiots to mess up.

Hope Sharjeel never finds a career anywhere in his life (now that he's basically guilty).

“We are listening to Sharjeel and Latif’s perspectives as well. It is necessary to listen to their side of the story. After that we will decide what action to take against them, but I can assure you that they will be subjected to the harshest of punishments [if found guilty],” said Shaharyar.

The only proof that they have is that sharjeel met with the booky, no proof on whether he accepted to fix or not.

Can you people please stop assuming stuff ! One or two statements by sethi, and everyone has gone crazy!

Why would a sane guy be involved in fixing? Babar Azam just got around 5lakhs in a single match, They are already so well paid. Sharjeel had contracts lined up, Central Contract, PSL's hot property and match fee is seperate.

How can you do it on financial grounds? Why would a sane guy take this much of a risk for such little amount. Shocking stuff from the Duo

Great read.

Should say a lot to those players who sell their souls for a quick buck while putting their team under the bus.

Would be a great story if they repeat despite all of this.

It adds up.

What if someone could earn 20 lakhs every match for 2 dot balls?

That's 20 x 8 PSL matches (1.6 crores) for doing nothing plus all of the money you mentioned. I'm sure the rates would be higher if you do it in the knockout rounds.

All of a sudden the risk starts looking reasonable for some when they see 1.6 crores in front of their eyes. I'm not saying its logical and it is indeed the height of stupidity but I want to show what a player might think.

Plus, most of these guys like Azharuddhin claim you get paid more and more once they trust you.

He isn't guilty, coz nothing has been proved yet.

Pcb said they have enough evidence to get these guys out of the league. Both Sharjeel and Khalid admited they were involved. What more proof do you want?

He admitted his guilt. He confessed to Najam Sethi

no he didn't.

Doesn't matter. It's still risky particularly when ACU is getting strict

Fantastic read. Love the passion from Deano. He invested a lot in both Sharjeel and Khalid. Hence it must be a bitter pill to swallow. Also my respect for Misbah just keeps on growing.

I wouldn't use logic to explain why a risk such as this is taken.

We see white collar crimes all the time from leading executives. These are people who could stop working today and never have to worry about money.

Yet, they still do it.

ACU might be strict but these players have insight behind the doors. They might be seeing 100s of players doing it and making big money.

All of a sudden that risk looks minimal.

Your continual defending of Sharjeel is really frustrating. The facts are that Sharjeel is a spot fixer for which he deserves a life ban.

Feel bad for Dean and Misbsh and shame on the fixers, specially Sharjeel who was backed so much by IU, Arthur, and PCB.

As I've said before, if they're guilty, ban them for life, but seems to have gotten pretty quiet.

A lot of "we have a lot of evidence/a boatload of evidence" to silence. Seems like a lot of posturing to me. Think about it this way "I have all the evidence in the world but I'm not going to tell you because it's confidential, and yet I might tamper with the process by speaking out which would be hypocritical and confusing".

Something just seems off about this all. Sethi and Khan have done some pretty brainless things in the past in tandem with childish actions (the Sethi Twitter handle is eerily similar to a recent presidential winner), so wouldn't be surprised if they spoke too soon. Again, could be wrong, but for people who were so confident, there seems to be little action.

Considering that three of his senior players have been the subject of printed allegations about their performance at the 2011 World Cup, and a fourth is banned for drugs offences, and Justice Qayyum had a "soft corner" for Wasim Akram, Dean Jones must be either very trusting or very naive.

Hopefully Sharjeel accepts his mistakes and becomes an honest man for the rest of his life, working a 9-5 job and raising a good family.

Which three players? Ajmal wasnt alleged anything

Gut wrenching interview. Especially Misbah's reaction to fixing and Wasim's personal loss. Misbah's entire legacy was on cleaning the Pakistan system after the dark days. To see this unfolding in his own team must have been heart breaking.

Kind of reminds me what dravid went through in IPL. These are men of honour and these scandals shouldn't be happening around them.

And meeting a bookie and not reporting it to the Anti-Corruption Unit alone is punishable by two year ban at least.
