India wrapped up yet another bilateral ODI series win earlier this week, their seventh on the trot.

Even though this was a good series win, the New Zealand team exposed quite a lot of weakness in this Indian team.

Twice in three games, the Indian bowling attack looked clueless while defending a good total, and the batting messed up good positions to post totals lower than they should have ended up with.

India has become a top-heavy batting line up with Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli doing the majority of the work. Even MS though Dhoni has done a bit over the past year, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya do not provide the kind of stability expected from a top ODI middle order.

The other problem in this series was the team’s late-order hitting.

In the final game, India were in a position to reach 360, but lost wickets and posted 337. Dhoni isn’t a hitter anymore and Jadhav is way too inconsistent to regularly do the job. Pandya is a good hitter of the spinners, but showed his limitations against good fast bowlers, and his own bowling isn’t reliable enough for him to be considered the team’s third seamer.

The biggest positive in the final game was the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah. On a wicket where Trent Boult had gone for 80-plus runs in his ten overs, Bumrah conceded just 47 runs in his full quota, picking up three vital wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar though was inconsistent, with one good performance sandwiched between two poor ones. It is strange that Mohammad Shami, who has the incredible ODI record of 91 wickets in 50 games at an average of 25, doesn’t get a game.

Sri Lanka arrive in India for a full series this month and it would be prudent for the selectors and the team management to make some minor changes to accommodate young players. Even though Dinesh Karthik didn’t do too badly with the chances he received, he isn’t India’s long-term solution for their middle order problems. Management also needs to get a decent number six or seven who can propel the score along if a good platform is set, even if it means bringing someone line Suresh Raina back in.

Lets hope that there are some new faces in the Indian T20 team. India has never won a T20 game against New Zealand, so it will be interesting if Kohli is ready to experiment.

When people are talking that this is the best Indian Cricket team in its history (especially Test Team), it is ironic to say that we have probably the worst middle order in ODIs in its entire history. Heck people like Ajay Jadeja, Robin Singh, Rahul Dravid, etc, were reliable in our weaker teams!

Let's hope both Rahul & Pandey plays in the team and they are persisted. Dhoni should at least spare T20s. Pandya should stick to No.7, we need him to learn attacking pacers in the death and take his bowling seriously.

No middle order= no wc.Simple.
1 knockout match top order doesnt fire and we will lose.
Poor work by team management not to fix our middle order and consistently ignoring our best performers like rahul.

Talking about positives you forgot to mention the wrist-spinner Chahal@giri26. I think he has bowled superbly of late.

Totally discarding KL Rahul after one series was quite unfair IMO.It wasn't like he was getting stuck in middle overs like Rahane,He mainly got out to a mystery spinner as he couldn't pick him.
It might be an unpopular opinion but the only way I see the batting order being sorted is if they bring Rahul at 3 & drop Kohli to 4(too good to fail consistently).
Kohli at 4 would mean he would more often than not stay till 42-46th over & if he gets in the zone he can alone push the projected score forward by 20-30 runs.

Exactly, that is one way of strengthening our middle order. In that way we can bring Pandya at No.6 or No.7. We can actually look for another spin bowling alrounder in place of Kuldeep/Chahal (I don't think both of them are needed in a single match unless it is a rank turner. We can rotate them. On flat pitches wrist spinners can go for runs even if they pick odd wickets. Somebody like Krunal Pandya can serve this purpose) Overseas we must go for a proper third seamer (discarding a spinner) and use Pandya more as a 5th bowler rather than 3rd seamer!

The better team would be something like this:

Rohit
Dhawan
Rahul
Kohli
Pandey
Pandya
Krunal
Dhoni
Bhuvaneshwar/Shami
Chahal/Kuldeep
Bumrah

Dhoni should be asked to play like a slogger at No.8. Let his helicopter & other innovative shots come back. He should not try to defend & play long innings like he used to do in the past. He doesn't have in him anymore to accelerate at some point. He is no more a finisher. If he can't hit/slog, he is at least good in running between wickets, so he should rotate the strike, he should not eat up balls coming at No.6 anymore. If he can't play this role also then he should quit (he gets qualified for this because he is still a good wicketkeeper in LOIs and for all his experience/tactics! This can come into play in some odd critical situation, but he should no more be relied for every situation as in past)
