Gordon Brown admits the war with Iraq was "not justified" and claims the US "misled" the UK over Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

The former prime minister, who was chancellor when the decision to go to war in 2003 was made, has revealed top-secret US intelligence casting serious doubt over the dictator's destructive capabilities was not shared with Britain.

He claimed only after leaving office did he become aware of "crucial" papers held by the US Department of Defence and believes the course of history could have been different had the information been shared.

Mr Brown said: "When I consider the rush to war in March, 2003 - especially in light of what we now know about the absence of weapons of mass destruction - I ask myself over and over whether I could have made more of a difference before that fateful decision was taken.

"We now know from classified American documents, that in the first days of September 2002 a report prepared by the US Joint Chiefs of Staff's director for intelligence landed on the desk of the US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld.

"Commissioned by Rumsfeld to identify gaps in the US intelligence picture, it is now clear how forcibly this report challenged the official view.

"If I am right that somewhere within the American system the truth about Iraq's lack of weapons was known, then we were not just misinformed but misled on the critical issue of WMDs.

"Given that Iraq had no usable chemical, biological or nuclear weapons that it could deploy and was not about to attack the coalition, then two tests of a just war were not met: war could not be justified as a last resort and invasion cannot now be seen as a proportionate response."

But Mr Brown admits that some form of international action was appropriate due to Saddam's continued failure to comply with UN resolutions.

The UK was part of the coalition led by the US which invaded Iraq after American President George W Bush and Tony Blair accused the dictator of possessing weapons of mass destruction and having links to terrorists.

As chancellor, Mr Brown said his only official role was to find funds for the war.

After an inquiry lasting seven years, the £13m Chilcot Report found the former Iraqi dictator posed "no imminent threat" at the time of the invasion of his country in 2003, and the war was unleashed on the basis of "flawed" intelligence.

Mr Brown said British intelligence which he and Mr Blair saw in 2002 suggested a capability, if not a production programme, of weapons of mass destruction.

However, the top-secret US report is said to have conceded that knowledge of the Iraqi nuclear weapons programme was based largely - perhaps 90 per cent - on analysis of imprecise intelligence.

In his latest book My Life, Our Times - due for release on Tuesday - Mr Brown claims the paper suggested previous assessments relied "heavily on analytic assumptions" rather than hard evidence and even refuted the country's capability to create weapons of mass destruction.

"I was told they knew where the weapons were housed. I remember thinking at the time that it was almost as if they could give me the street name and number where they were located," he adds.

"It is astonishing that none of us in the British government ever saw this American report."

One month after Rumsfeld's confidential paper, President Bush went on record for the first time with the assertion that Iraq "possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons" and was "seeking nuclear weapons".

It is not known who - if anyone - in the US administration had seen the dossier.

In his report into the UK's most controversial military engagement since the end of the Second World War, Iraq Inquiry chairman Sir John last year said the war "went badly wrong, with consequences to this day".

He made no judgment on whether military action was legal, but found that then attorney general Lord Goldsmith's decision that there was a legal basis for UK involvement in the US-led invasion was taken in a way which was "far from satisfactory".

Mr Blair has insisted he acted in good faith based on the intelligence available to him in the run up to the war.

I like Mr Brown a lot. He is the last Labour leader I admire. I like to think we would not have followed Bush 43 under his leadership.

Finally the innocent Iraqis get some justice. These words by Mr Brown will go a long way in healing the wounds.

Iraq war not just from 2003 but from the 90's inc sanctions is the biggest state terrorist act in modern history.

To answer your question the US is the worlds biggest superpower (althought not for long now) , it controls the UN and also the financial institutions such as the IMF. It also controls the western mainstream media who are not neutral at all but are also guilty imo because they use propaganda to help this occur.

The western people although not guilty and nobody should take any revenge on the public are however guilty of being stupid enough to fall for the lies. Not all but enough did to allow this to happen.

Colin the war criminal Powell tried to scare his people by pulling out a small test tube in front of people , claiming such a small amount of Anthrax will be lethal.

Blair the war criminal claimed Iraq could hit UK in 45 mins lol.

While Bush made up all sorts of rubbish, whatever came into his thick head.

These are the most evil people in the last few decades, they are the real terrorists and they will be in the lowest part of hellfire, where imo Madeline Albright is.

Remember this woman? If not here is a reminder. Imagine if Putin or any Muslim said this after causing the death of half a million?

One of the reasons why this was the most evil terrorist attack in recent history.

This isnt a new video but even today babies are being born deformed because the so called liberal freedom loving west used chemical weapons on the Iraqi people.

Imagine if this was your baby?

The people who bombed were god fearing Christian neoconservatives. ( bush 1 and bush 2).

0 sympathies for Iraq. Saddam Hussain deserved to be hunted down. Guy was a menace in the middle east. He tried to destroy Kuwait, and slowed down its development. He even started a war with Iran. At the end the dictator hid in a hole and was rightfully hanged for the crimes he committed.

USA attacking Iraq was a blessing for the middle east belt.

Sadly, people are not aware about Saddam's antics and an anti west narrative is build where USA is looked as the bad guy only cause they never found WMD.

I understand your hate for Saddam but if they didn't find any WMDs then there was no justification for the war.

There was enough justification to kill Sadam though the guy had committed brutal crimes and he needed to pay for it.

Will you say the same for GWB? That he deserved to die because he killed people?

Will you say the same for GWB? That he deserved to die because he killed people?

Did GW Bush held a party conference where he does a Purge against the party members who he thought were not loyal to him and than named 56 people and had them killed by a firing squad?

Did GW Bush started a useless war with Kuwait where after intervention of mediators, did he left the country by burning many of the major oils refineries or mines which ended up destroying a major chuck of oil production that the world could had used, and on top of that, stopping Kuwait from developing itself like UAE was.

Did GW Bush throw chemical weapons on Iranis and started a useless war based on shia and sunni?

Did GW Bush systematically kill Kurdish people?

Before going on whining about what US did with Saddam, people need to read what Saddam was doing. Had USA done what Saddam was doing, people here would had cried about Islamic genocide and what not. But because Saddam did it, no one even brushes an eye on that.

God made Saddam and the Ba'ath party pay for its crimes

Dont be naive, bro. No one, absolutely NO One over here is shedding tears for Saddam. Everyone over here is against Saddam and his brutal regime. People is shedding tears for the people of Iraq. Those innocent Iraqi people that who suffered under Saddam and then got streamrolled to death brutally by Nato and US in the name of liberation.

If USA had executed Saddam or tried to topple him from power, no one over here would have any problems. Instead everyone would not only vehemently support the USA, but appreciate them whole heartedly. Instead USA placed boots on the ground in order to steal their resources and control that part of the globe. And in the process brought a modern genocide in that poor country for no reason.
