The fact that PCB is responsible for Pakistani players getting snubbed by the IPL seems to be lost on quite a few.
You have to feel sorry for our players who have missed out on millions thanks to the stunt that the PCB pulled off in 2009, a stunt that backfired spectacularly.
For those who are unaware of the series of events, I will provide a summary.
As a retaliation to India accusing Pakistan of orchestrating Mumbai attacks, PCB decided to retaliate by blocking Pakistani players from participating in IPL 2.
Pakistani players were integral members of the franchises in IPL 1, and it was quite a blow for their management who had to hurrily find their replacements.
The PCB thought that by preventing our players from participating in the IPL, they will be able to sabotage the tournament. However, their delusions backfired and IPL grew bigger and bigger each year.
As a result of PCB’s bravado, the franchises lost faith in Pakistani players because they could simply no longer trust the PCB.
If they could prevent their players from participating in IPL 2 due to political reasons, they could do the same in the future.
A year later, PCB was in a better mood and decided to allow its players to play in the IPL, but this time, they completely ignored the Pakistani players and caused PCB tremendous humiliation.
At some point, Pakistani players would have been banned anyway. However, PCB’s arrogance and hot-headedness escalated the situation.
Had they not reacted in IPL 2, our players would have played at least 3-4 seasons of IPL which is a lot of money. In fact, someone like Amir may not have been tempted by the prospects of spot-fixing had he played in IPL 2010.
Pakistani fans who are whining about IPL discriminating against Pakistan should understand that this discrimination is a self-created problem.
The blame for our players missing out on IPL is entirely on PCB’s head. Yes IPL reacted very strongly, but Pakistani players cannot walk in and out of the IPL based on PCB’s mood.
Our players do not deserve to be snubbed because it isn’t their problem, but PCB fully deserves to have its players banned by IPL.
