This is a really funny topic. My and my brother were beaten up by our mother at alarming frequencies during our childhood. My brother though was beaten up less than me. I was beaten up almost daily till the age of around 10. The only human being I was scared of during my childhood was my mother.

Then came 2015, my sister-in-law gave birth to the pride and joy of our family, my nephew. I can't even put into words how special he is to my family. And not surprisingly, my mother who used to beat up her kids, turned completely different towards her grandson.

Now, it would take a lot of guts for my brother and sister-in-law to even scold their son in front of our mother. Once or twice they did, and my mother was on the verge of beating them up :)))

She won't even tolerate anyone saying a bloody word towards her grandson. He is the love of her life.

And my mother is not an isolated case. I have seen the strictest of parents melt and turn into loving grandparents who won't tolerate anyone speaking a word about their grandkids.

Have you guys experienced this change of heart in your parents ever? I still can't believe how scared we used to be of our mother, and how tolerant she is now towards her grandson.

She'll mercilessly kill anyone who even dares to scold or even say a word towards her grandson :)))

I haven't experienced it yet as I am not married and I have no child.

On a personal level, I love my grandparents from my dad's side. My grandma lives in rural part of Bangladesh (Barisal) and she always cries when she talks with me. My grandpa passed away a few years ago and I miss him.

It’s biological. Grandparents see their genetically legacy in the generation one removed from them.

may be Grandma feels sorry for what she has done to you and your brother and now wants to make amends.

I used to be scared of her more than anyone in this world. But that was till the age of around 10, things changed after that.

In joint families, overprotective grandmothers usually play a negative role in personality development of children.
