Finally in Karachi after Lahore and Peshawar...

LAHORE: The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust is organising the ground-breaking ceremony of Pakistan’s third inspiring and critically needed Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in DHA City, Karachi on Thursday.

As per hospital’s policy and history, nine-year-old patient Waleed Ahmed from Jamshoro will be the special guest to perform the ceremony on this extraordinary event. This new hospital in Karachi will make comprehensive cancer care accessible for poor cancer patients and bring hope of life closer to Sindh and adjoining areas. Two state-of-the-art Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospitals in Lahore and Peshawar are already providing cancer care tremendously to the indigent cancer patients.

A 20-acre land has been awarded for the construction of the hospital. According to the management of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, this comprehensive cancer centre will be built for Rs 4.5 billion. The first phase would take two-and-a-half-year to complete and the multi-level facility is expected to be operational on December 29, 2019. The facility will gradually scale up to the level of a fully functional cancer care hospital for the people residing in south of Pakistan.

The new facility is planned to have operating rooms, an intensive care unit (ICU), a chemo-bay facility, inpatient rooms, and outpatient clinics, initially. The hospital will have nine clinical departments namely medical oncology, paediatric oncology, radiation oncology with two IMRT linear accelerators, brachytherapy and CT simulation services, surgical oncology, anaesthesia, radiology with two CT scanners, one MRI scanner, x-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography scanners and a PET CT scanner with cyclotron, internal medicine, nuclear medicine with two SPECT-CT gamma camera, and pathology offering haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, cytology, and a blood bank including NAT testing.

This enormous facility, would no doubt, open up opportunities for the oncologists, doctors, nurses and health professionals to get training in the management, diagnosis and treatment of the cancer patients, and it would surely enhance and raise the healthcare standards in the region with providing opportunities of training and career to the locals as well.

As per hospital’s record, about 75 percent of the patients had been treated free of cost at the two hospitals since its first facility started in Lahore in 1994. The hospital had spent Rs 22 billion on the diagnosis and treatment of the cancer patients so far.

Imran Khan, Chairman Board of Governors, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, board members, hospital’s senior management and representatives from different quarters of the city, hospital’s well-wishers, donors and celebrities will be present at this extraordinary event, while Brigadier Shahid Hassan Ali, Administrator, DHA Karachi will be the guest speaker of the ceremony.

Well done Imran Khan for making it happen once again...

No doubt IK is a great philanthropist who continues to do great work for Pakistan. This is what he should do, politics is not for him.

Yeah he should leave politics for the looters and plunderers. Imran is too clean and thinks about the poor Pakistanis, he can never be a good politician.

There is no point doing all this philanthropist work if you can't preserve it. To preserve it one needs political power.

He won't get elected in the next elections either and then will whine about the supposed rigging. :))

Many people think of poor Pakistanis other then IK. We need new faces instead of IK's old and boring speeches that won't get him anywhere. Nawaz and Zardari are to smart for him. they may be incredibly corrupt but always out think this naïve man. IK can preserve his hospital's and Namal college without political power. I hear Shah Mehmood is thinking of quitting the PTI as well.

What a relevant post. Well done!

On topic, great stuff from the man once again, and the fact that it has brought some sore Nooras to this thread shows he's doing something right.

is the peshawar hospital completed and functioning?

Phase 1 is completed and they opened it last year not 100% functional yet but still it's helping to decrease load on Lahore SKMCH.

The second Hospital was inaugurated on 29 December 2015 by a cancer patient in Peshawar. At the completion of phase I, the Hospital has commenced clinical services, with outpatient clinics, inpatient beds, a fully equipped intensive care unit (ICU), a full-service pharmacy and twenty-four hour emergency services all fully functional. In addition, chemotherapy service has also commenced operations at the hospital, which is of tremendous benefit to itspatients, who were previously required to make repeated physically, emotionally and financially demanding trips to Lahore to have cyclical chemotherapy treatments every few weeks. In conjunction with the commencement of clinical services, the full range of Pathology and Radiology services have also begun in Peshawar. The Radiology department has X-Ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography, CT and MRI facilities, and the PET-CT scanner, the first in Pakistan north of Lahore, should also be operational this summer. Commencement of Radiation Oncology services, planned for 2018, and surgical services in 2020 are parts of phase two and phase three of the Hospital.

4 billion rupees were needed every year to run just Lahore hospital so now with 2 more hospitals they will probably need more money and fund raising campaigns. But as they say koshish kerna insan ka kaam he rasta ALLAH nikaal deta he...

There are many great people working for SKMCH fund raising but i would like to mention the name of JJ's aunty and PTI leader Fouzia Kasoori she is doing fundraising for SKMCH from decades and most of the year you see her busy doing the fundraising for SKMCH overseas specially in US.

Did he give it from his own pocket? Or was it from public land?

Public land and Nawaz was PM so IK sent a letter to his office back in 91. Now information minister of Noon govt is saying Shaukat Khanum Hospital is a gift by Nawaz Shareef and pride of the nation. I guess they forget this pride thingy when all those derbari ministers attack Shaukat Khanum funding all the time just to hit IK.

On same note, hospital is built with donations (public money). Let everyone take credit.

Agree with you and thats what IK mentions most of the time that how poor people of Pakistan helped him built this hospital and he also give full credit to all the fund raisers and keep mentioning their names.

Yeah just because someone isn't a Imran Khan supporter, they must be a Noora. Great logic.

Allah taala iss naik kaam ki takmeel mein barkat daalay aor issay kamyaab keray. Allah keray k iss haspataal se less fortunate tabqa maximum faeyda uthaa paaey.

Allah taala cancer ki research mein mazeed kamyaabian dey tamaam sciencedaanoun ko. Aameen.

Imran Khan and all those who are sacrificing physically or financially for this project may Allah bless you all and give you the best reward. Aameen.

Agreed, but if they are desperate to take credit why are they so desperate to destroy it.

It's not any easy task to keep politics separate from philanthropic work and I know IK is trying to keep them separate but with not much success. And there is an obvious conflict of interests.

And competing parties have reason to think that he is getting political milage out of public donations.

But then sharif brothers also take credit of each and every govt project.

Imo, as pakistan is so under developed, at this we should accept this conflict of interest for the greater good of Pakistan.
