INDIAN rookie Hardik Pandya has garnered high praise from three of the country’s most influential cricket figures.

Just three Tests into his career Pandya has been compared to David Warner by Sunil Gavaskar, tipped to be the next Kapil Dev by chairman of selectors MSK Prasad and hailed as “special” by captain Virat Kohli.

Pandya, 23, has shone for India since making his Test debut at the start of the recent series against Sri Lanka, finishing the campaign with 178 runs to his name at an average of 59.33 with a strike rate of 107.87.

Having started his Test career with a half-century, he signed off from the series in style, going from one to 108 in a single session.

Warner pulled off a similar feat against Pakistan earlier this year, going to lunch on day one at the Sydney Cricket Ground with 100 to his name. Gavaskar can see parallels between the two explosive hitters.

“It’s still early days but Pandya has proven that he has it in himself to succeed in Test cricket,” Gavaskar told NDTV. “He is a bit like David Warner. I believe that Hardik will follow Warner’s footsteps and become a successful player in all three formats of the game.”

Warner first grabbed headlines in 2009 when he hammered 89 off 43 on international debut in a Twenty20 against South Africa and went on to make a name for himself as one of the format’s most exciting batsmen. In 2011 he entered the Test arena and has since establish himself as one of its most feared players.

It’s a path Gavaskar can see Pandya taking. Prior to the tour of Sri Lanka, the all-rounder had already cemented his spot in India’s one-day international (289 runs at 41.28, 19 wickets at 34.73) and Twenty20 (100 runs at 10.00, 15 wickets at 25.93) outfits.

While Pandya has a long way to go as a batsman before he is comparable to Warner, he does have a skill the Australian does not boast. Capable of bowling above 140km/h, the right-armer proved a reliable option for Kohli in Sri Lanka (four wickets at 23.75) and had a knack of taking key wickets, accounting for centurion Kusal Mendis and the dangerous Niroshan Dickwella in the second Test and former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews in the third.

Unsurprisingly, Pandya has already garnered comparisons to Kapil, the last great Indian seam-bowling all-rounder. Kapil scored over 5000 runs (5248 at 31.05) and took over 400 wickets (434 at 29.64) for India in Test cricket, dominated the ODI arena (3783 runs at 23.79 with a strike rate of 95.07, 253 wickets at 27.45 with an economy of 3.71), and led the country to World Cup glory in 1983.

Whether Pandya ever captains India remains to be seen, but chairman of selectors Prasad is confident he has the talent to match the all-time great as a player.

“If he stays grounded I am sure we will see him being compared to the legendary Kapil Dev in the times to come,” Prasad told the Press Trust of India after Pandya hit his maiden Test ton.

Asked if India had finally completed its search for a seam-bowling all-rounder, Prasad answered in the affirmative.

“He has already established himself in shorter formats (ODIs and T20) very well and this Test series has given him a good platform to establish himself in the longest format

“He has utilised the opportunity given to him and came out with flying colours.”

For his part, Pandya has played down suggestions he is the new Kapil.

“Obviously my focus is to play my cricket and just become what I can become,” he said after his century. “Even if I can be 10 per cent of what Kapil Dev was, I will be pretty happy in my life.”

Pandya’s captain, Kohli, just wants the rising star to continue being himself.

“We let him be who he is, we let him express himself,” Kohli told reporters after the match.

“You know, a guy who can get a fifty and a hundred in his first three games batting at number eight has to have something special in him.

“He brings in great balance to the team, he’s a gun fielder and gives you those crucial breakthroughs ... we absolutely have 120 per cent faith in him.”

Pandya reminded me of great Kapil. Slightly better batsman than Kapil but Kapil was way better in Bowling.

I rate him as a better batsman than a bowler. Has a great eye.

I sincerely hope Junaids doesn't spoil this thread by bringing in players from the 30's and 40's.

Better batsmen than Kapil ? :)) you obviously have seen the way DEV violated the great WI bowlers manhood in their backyard lad..... Dev couldve been one of the ATG batsmen of his era if he solely concentrated on his batting, he was that talented but he chose to have a SIX and OUT attitude hence he massively underachieved.... Vaskar once said a man of Dev's batting ability should have scored atleast 10,000 test runs...

Kapil captained the Indian team to victory at 1983 WC at just age of freaking 23!!!!! defeating Windies twice in that tournament.

Hate the hype machines.

Nope, I'm going to set a simple challenge for Pandiya, to see how good he is.

India plays 4 Tests in South Africa in January and February, just as England and Ben Stokes did 2 years ago.

In those 4 Tests, Ben Stokes:

- scored 411 runs in 7 innings at an average of 58.71
- took 12 wickets at an average of 29.06.

I set Hardik Pandiya the following challenges for his 4 Test tour of South Africa to prove that he is roughly half as good as Ben Stokes:

1. Get selected for all 4 Tests.
2. Score a minimum of 300 runs (you potentially have 8 innings).
3. Have a minimum batting average of 35.00.
4. Take a minimum of 12 wickets.
5. Have a bowling average no higher than 30.00.

If Pandiya can meet all of those benchmarks, I will take him seriously.

So, if Stokes tours Lanka and does not make half of what Pandya made, you will question Stokes then ??

The hype machine going full force here.. remember how Munaf Patel was supposed to be the next Glenn McGrath? lol.. we all saw how that worked out. Can you have these newbies at least achieve a semblance of prolonged success over various conditions before making pointless comparisons please.

Pandiya has hardly done anything in this series:

3 Test matches
178 runs @ 59.33
4 wickets @ 23.75

Good grief, he hasn't exactly set the world on fire.

Could Ben Stokes score less than 178 runs in 3 Tests, or take fewer than 4 wickets?

Pandiya is a COMPLETE NOBODY.

He is going to be 24 years old in 2 months, but:

1) He has scored less than 1000 First Class runs in his entire career.
2) He has taken fewer than 30 First Class runs in his entire career.

My 13 year old daughter is as qualified as Pandiya is to play Test cricket. I've got stains on my curtains which have an equal claim to Pandiya to being a proven Test cricketer.

I think thats quite fair .
1. Most likely will play all 4 .
2. Will be pleasantly surprised if he aggregates 300 for two reasons , its his first tour to SA and may struggle badly in the first 2 tests and secondly if he bats at 8 he will unlikely get the support from tail to play a long innings in SA .
3. Except him to average ~25-30 .
4. Should get longer spells and his bowling style should suite the conditions , so I expect him to get chip in with 2-3 wickets . So 12-15+ wickets is a possibility .
5. This should be the easiest imo .

And who exactly are you to set any challenge for pandya? Pandya is a future star, a multi millionaire, a successful person while you are a bitter keyboard warrior, pandya doesn't need your approval

I am no fan of Juniads, but for once he makes a bit of sense in his post. He set out some fair criteria's, if Pandya turns out to be a star then we can hype him up but a showing vs the Sri Lankans is not much to talk about currently but credit to him for playing well.

Thanks for the kind words! :)

The funny thing is, South Africa are in such quota-related decline that Pandya might actually meet the targets that I have set him. And then I'll have to congratulate him!

He is a poor man's Abdul Razzaq. Might be good enough for ODI cricket, but I fear he is not good enough for Test Cricket. I hope he proves me wrong.

Kapil Dev was a beast of a different class and should not be compared to Hardik Pandya. Kapil was a front line bowler for India and more than a useful batsman. Hardik won't bowl 20 overs a today and burden the responsibility of the 3rd seamer. His batting though may be comparable to Kapil's, but Kapil proved himself against great bowlers. Pandya may have a chance to matching Kapil with the bat.

He's a ATG in the making.

We should already start calling him Sir Hardik.

Pandya reminded me of great Kapil. Slightly better batsman than Kapil but Kapil was way better in Bowling.

Upto 1983 Kepil was a great Swing bowler, for the next decade he was awful. As a batsman he was talented and mercurial but mostly underachieved. Pandaya is def talented but the test for him, like with all bowlers is how well he comes back after injury. The bowling gives his batting free licence to play so at the moment he looks a beast.

Abdul Razzaq as a test player was pretty poor.

The overrating has already started.

He is an exceptional hitter against spin and thats it. Dont think he is a natural bowler as he started bowling 3 years ago.

South Africa regardless will be a tough match up for any sub continental team, if Dale Steyn plays and Pandya does well then he has come of age

Fair comment.

The next sixteen months for me are primarily a race between India and Pakistan to be the first Asian team to win a Test series in South Africa.

What in god's world Pandya is better batsman than Kapil. Kapil could play purely as a batsman. His ability against genuine pace is yet to be matched by Pandya. Kapil literally swept Winston benjamin for a six. He smashed best of the best bowlers in his era. If anything he did not do justifce his batting potential. His strike rate in Tests was around 80 when other all rounders decided to mix aggression with caution.

The thing about Pandya is that he is getting better at a steady pace. Go back to threads discussing him a year ago and see how much he has improved in the estimation of posters.

Though I doubt his daughter would be selected for the #1 ranked Test team, Junaids is right that statistically Pandya isn't impressive as yet. It is the rate of progress which catches one's attention. If he had not chosen to try to protect his partner and not hit a boundary off the last ball of the over, Pandya would have the most runs scored in a Test over beating Lara's record 28.

Yeah I agree as well , its a fair criteria .

Where I would be careful is branding Pandya as bits and pieces player if he fails in SA , while performing in alien conditions can and should be a difference between a very good player to an great one , that should not be everything . Also if he keeps doing well in SC , you know he will get may be 2 , 3 or 4 chances to do well .

Overall if he can do very well in one of Aus/SA/Eng/NZ and 2 decent tours , he would have exceeded anyone's expectations .

I dont agree with comparing him to Kapil , but the most impressive thing about Pandyas batting is his ability to hit fast bowlers , which is very rare . Thats the thing which got me excited the first time I saw him

Too early to call Pandya all of that and comparing to big names like Kapil, Stokes is just

Pandya should be the next Pandya. Not so and so great players of past era.

Pandya has to prove himself against tougher opponents and bowling before we all can jump on his bandwagon.

As of now, Pandya is a kind of player who is hard to find. A pace bowling all rounder is something India has lacked for almost 3 decades now. Robin Singh was the closest we had and he was a mediocre trundler.

Let him progress at his own pace without putting him under pressure. In fact I think that he is being groomed nicely by making him a member of the national team gradually- first in T20, then in ODI, and then in tests. And so far, he has shown the ability to improve with every outing.

There is no need to hype Pandya. Who knows, some day others may be compared to him instead of being the other way round.

He is still young, he deserves time before we mark him as equal to bonafide legend.

I absolutely detest the hype machines that mark out every young talent in south asia to be wasim akram/kapil dev/waqar etc etc. I have seen lot of indian bowling and allrounder talent get wasted in the previous decade because of such tags. Agarkar had the same tag so did irfan pathan and balaji too.

Respect the lads achievement as of now. But don't hype him to the moon. He has good temperament and knack of selivering under pressure fron what i have seen of him. Let him play for 8 to 10 years then we can assess where he stands. And i say the same for Stokes. Let them play 100 matches then we shall see how good they are.

I don't rate englishmen who don't do jack in asia yet have to be considered great because they do good in england or australia not do i rate asian players who can't perform outside asia example ashwin. Same yardsticks for all

I guess in the end it really does not matter if HP goes on to become next Kapil Dev or Kallis or Klusener or wether he has fans or not or haters who like to show him down but secretly wish he was in thier team.
What matters is the captain of his team is confident he is valuable player and contributes to wins ,be it with bat or ball.
What matters is when he walks out to bat, the opposition bowlers dont feel relaxed but feel tense that game may slip from them in few overs, if HP clicks
What matters is when he bowls, the opposition batsman feel he is the weak link and go after him and end up giving 2-3 wickets to him ,because he can be deceptive.

He will definitely he a star, not sure about being better than Kapil though. Also don't think he should aim to emulate Warner, he shouldn't want to be known as an FTB which Warner is.

don't understand this comparison. Pandya is a lower order batsman who can bowl. All rounder. whereas other three are top order batsmen.

Kapil had potential but we all know the he underachieved. he was the most talented of all 4 allrounder with the Bat. But Imran ended up by having better average with slightly more than half of Kapil's batting talent.

So far I have not seen any recklessness in Pandya's batting. Ofcourse he is still new. but he looks like he would do better than Kapil with the bat in my opinion.

This guys a seriously talented batsmen and a lively medium pace bowler~ fearless attitude, good fielder when you add all these things up he s a great find for India.
He cant be compared to Kapil yet[one of the great allrounders the game has ever seen].
At the same time Junaids critique of him as someone who hasn't scored runs/got wickets at first class means nothing.
He could end of being a very good forth seamer for India and an aggressive top order bat for India

he looks fine.comparison is not justified Junaids agreed with ur criteria..

I was very critical of India for selecting him for the first time since his domestic stats were laughable and made him look like an Anwar Ali clone but he's managed to improve drastically at the international level which is remarkable. His bowling is somewhat decent for a third or fourth seamer and he bowled pretty well in the CT 2017 final against Pak, he'll keep on bowling aggressively and try to get at the batsman's throat but he's not amazing with the ball though.

His hitting ability with the bat is outstanding as of now, he's managed to hit certain spinners out the park repeatedly and he's not someone that needs time to settle in; he can hit from ball one. His batting technique and awareness looks a lot better now as well, he can rotate the strike and hit balls in between too. Also an electric fielder and comes across as a complete package. He really proved me wrong initially as I thought he was going to be someone who'd be an IPL exclusive superstar for the rest of his career. A real find for India.

He's a great talent who will most likely have an excellent career. However, I highly doubt he can ever match Kapil's bowling who was a one man army in the Indian bowling attack.

Any highlights when he hit fast bowling? I havent followed his career enough to see him hitting against pacers.

Is he a power hitter like Dhoni against fast bowling? Or can he play 360 degree shots like AB De Villiers/Buttler against pacers ? Or is he like Kohli who can hit conventional shots and effortless sixes against quickies?

How many Pakistani batsman avg 35 or more in SA?

Doesn't take much to be better than a guy who averaged 30 with bat and ball. Moeen Ali is getting there too and so is Stokes.

Test cricket is not like ODI/T20 cricket.

Let's see how his performance against better teams outside SC. Although, potential is there!

Kapil paji was a great, he under achieved a lot. Should have scored 10k in tests ,8 k in Odis and 500 wickets in Tests eyes closed. Let Hardik play for 4-5 years

Let Moeen take a wicket outside England first. Kapil has fifers against WI away.
