CHANDIGARH: Indian women Twenty20 captain and Arjuna awardee Harmanpreet Kaur has been caught on a sticky wicket. She is likely to lose her job as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Punjab as the police verification has found her graduation degree to be bogus.

A Moga native, Harmanpreet had joined the Punjab police as DSP on March 1. The Punjab police have now found her “testimonials not to be correct.” It is learnt that the police department has sent its proposal to the home department headed by chief minister Amarinder Singh, saying that Harmanpreet could not continue as a DSP because of the lack of a genuine graduation degree.

Confirming the issue, DGP (administration) MK Tiwari told TOI, “Harmanpreet had produced the graduation degree conferred on her purportedly by the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

‘Got DSP rank for cricketing achievements’

When the commandant of the Punjab Armed Police in Jalandhar sent the degree for verification, the Meerut university replied that this registration number does not exist.” He said facts of the case have been sent to the state government, which is the appointing authority, for action.

When contacted on her mobile, Harmanpreet said, “I don’t know who has told you this. Waise to aisa kuch ha nahi (There is nothing like this).” Asked when did she complete her graduation and in which subjects, and whether her degree was genuine, she refused to reply and said, “I can only talk to you after talking to my department.”

The police department has submitted that Harmanpreet got the DSP rank because of her cricketing achievements, but her education qualification is not commensurate with the DSP’s post as per the laid down rules. Therefore, Harmanpreet had to leave the post. However, she could claim the DSP rank as and when she becomes eligible.

After her performance in the Women’s Cricket World Cup last year, Capt Amarinder Singh had offered DSP’s post to Harmanpreet. But she was then employed with the Western Railways after signing a five-year bond. Though Harmanpreet had tendered her resignation last year, she was not relieved because she had to pay back five years’ salary if she left the job before completion of the bond term. Since Harmanpreet had only completed three years of service, Amarinder had taken up her case with railway minister Piyush Goyal so that she could join the Punjab Police.

This is not the first such case in the Punjab Police. In February, Amarinder had ordered removal of the 2010-Commonwealth Games gold medallist and two-time Asian Games (2010 and 2014) gold medalist in 4 x 400 m relay

Mandeep Kaur

from DSP’s post. She was appointed by the SAD-BJP government in 2016. Mandeep had submitted her graduation degree purportedly acquired from an institute recognised by the Sikkim University. But the state police verification had found that Mandeep had never remained a student under the Sikkim University.

There are sikhs in Pakistan. where have you been hiding?

I understand the need to defend everything.

What's wrong with you dude, answer the question.

He mentions Indian Punjab specifically and then goes on to say about Sikhs which form majority in Indian Punjab.

No one is defending anyone, jus that there is no difference.

Instead of questioning someone who targeted a particular religion, you are devoting your energy on the guy who is questioning it. Well done!

In north America it's only sikhs and tamils. Pakistani Punjabis aren't involved in any sketchy stuff over here.

Even a thread about some Indian woman cricketer ends up in a whatabout Pakistan. The answer is I don't know. Not sure if Pakistani women players are forced to wear burkas, but we can always discuss it.

Never heard of tamil gangsters? They're notorious in western countries. There's nothing manly in being a low life criminal.

Nope I'm Hindu Punjabi ( do have Sikhs as family members ) who grew up in Chennai.

And he is talking about Canada being in Usa, but just included it as Normal America.

And the Tamils are Lankan again in Canada.

It's common here to award such prestigious posts to sportsmen who have made a mark.
Remember Joginder Sharma? He's a DSP in Haryana as well.

Yup the same salary and the additional perks as a regular govt employee.
More than salary it's the prestige the job carries with itself that matters.
No one likes to mess with higher cops.

I really disagree with them awarding cricketers with government positions, no matter how small or large.

It is unfair to those who trained and studied to become government officials in their respective fields.

Agreed cricketers are already earning enough to live a more than decent life.
These kind of opportunities should be awarded to sportsmen from less popular sports who struggle to make a living after their career is over.

Is it a publicity thing or just a genuine show of affection for these cricket stars in India?

They do it for all sportsmen actually (although the cricketers for some reason tend to get the better sounding and paying jobs).

The Punjab government has reportedly withdrawn Harmanpreet Kaur's Deputy Superintendent of Police rank after police verification found that her graduation degree was fake.

According to a report in Times of India, the India women's T20 captain, who joined the Punjab police as DSP on 1 March, submitted a 2011 graduation degree. It was apparently issued by Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, but it turned out to be fake.

The Indian Express reports that the Punjab government may demote Harmanpreet as a constable in the Punjab police.

"She told us that her coach got her admission in the university, saying it was flexible about exams. She has told us she was given the degree but had no inkling that it was fake. The CM has almost decided that we appoint her as constable, a post matching with her educational qualification of senior secondary and elevate her as DSP as and when she fulfils her educational requirement," a senior officer of the Punjab government was quoted as saying to The Indian Express.

When approached for a response about the same, Harmanpreet said, "I am not well and taking rest. Will tell you later."

If Punjab police decide to file an FIR against Harmanpreet for forgery and criminal conspiracy over her fake degree, she could also lose her Arjuna award.

However, the Punjab government have opted against taking any legal action.

"She is a player of international repute and was given DSP rank on the basis of her achievements in the field of cricket," an officer told TOI.

Following Harmanpreet's brilliant performance in the 2017 women's World Cup, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh had offered her the DSP post in the Punjab police. But the Indian batswoman was already employed as Office Superintendent with Western Railways owing to which she was not able to join Punjab police for six months. However, Amarinder intervened and got her relieved. Harmanpreet finally assumed her duties in the Punjab police in February 2018.

Harmanpreet Kaur Hits Back in Fake Degree Controversy, Says She Has Not Been Demoted [UPDATE]

Indian women's T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was allegedly removed from her position as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) after her degrees were found to be fake, has now come out and defended herself saying all her degrees are legal.

Reports had earlier emerged of the Indian cricketer being demoted from her position by employers Punjab Police, after Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut had said that Kaur's enrollment number was fake.

"When you did your graduation, did you go to the head office to verify your enrollment number? Nobody does that. I did exactly the same thing. If I am playing, my focus is obviously on cricket. Apart from that, I just wanted to complete my graduation. On the basis of my graduation certificate, I took admission in post graduation course in a different university but could never take my exams because of overseas tournaments. Today, that very degree is being called fake," Kaur told Times of India.

Kaur further clarified that her examination centre was in Delhi, "I have cleared all my exams and my every certificate is legal. My examination centre used to be in Delhi. My subjects were Sociology, Political Science, English and General Awareness.

"I completed my graduation through distance learning from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in 2009-11. Earlier, I was pursuing my graduation from a college in Jalandhar, where I did my first year. Thereafter, I was not able to pursue it as my cricket schedule and the examination dates used to clash always. Besides, as the college principal had changed, and they did not like me pursuing sports, they did not adjust exam timings as per my cricket schedule. So, I had to migrate to another university. I have been playing for India after completing my Class XII," she added.

The 29-year-old further added that no one from Punjab Police has communicated to her about the demotion. "The department should initiate action against me. I am waiting for word from my department.I have not received any notice from my department. I have not received any notice from my department.I am talking to you because I am tired of reading about this in newspapers everyday. Otherwise, I am relying on my department completely and whatever decision it takes would be the last." she said.

Kaur has played 87 ODIs for India, scoring 2196 runs with the highest score of 171* coming against Australia in Women's World Cup semi-final in 2017. She will next be seen in action in the Kia Super League in England, starting next week.
