Many people in Karachi have shared experiences where they have either themselves or known someone who have suffered miraculous recoveries from severe back problems, injuries through Hijama or going to Homeopathy doctors.

I have been dealing with Sciatic pain and a herniated disc in my back for the last 5-6 months which results in a sharp shooting pain in my lower back to right buttocks, hamstring, calf e.t.c and trust me the pain at times can be very frustrating mentally and physically debilitating. My doctor has so far advised me to just stick to physiotherapy and swimming but one doctor even told me i will never ever be able to lift weights in the gym again which was very scary to hear.

The pain miraculously subsided when i went for Hajj from Aug 26 to Sept 10th (maybe the fact i was taking 6 anti inflammitories prescribed by the doctor helped) but has returned in some shape or form since then.

Homeopathy doctors are all quacks.

What's a Hijama?

Wet Cupping.

I have an hour of normal cupping done every 4-6 weeks. It's a form of strong massage all over the body which helps relaxes the muscles. I've also found it to help in other ways, a few months ago I had a strong cough, a day after the therapy it went. I might try hot cupping next but not sure about wet cupping.

If ever there was a pseudoscience, it is homeopathy. The tales of people being cured by it are either due to the placebo effect or because of confirmation bias. Reading the Wikipedia page on homeopathy should be enough for anyone to avoid wasting their hard-earned money on such quackery.

It infuriates me no end when I remember how there was a homeopathy clinic on every street corner in Pakistan, and graffiti on every wall advertising their miracle cures for everything, in particular the so-called "secret" ailments.

They do good business too, because people blindly take their sugary pills and powders. There were guys in my gym in Pakistan who took homeopathic powders to gain muscle, and they were convinced that they were seeing gains. What was really happening was that the homeopathic powders were anabolic steroids, and because there wasn't any regulation, there is no way to stop unscrupulous "doctors" from passing off steroids as benign homeopathic supplements.

There was a girl in my neighborhood who saw an ad in a newspaper for a homeopathic treatment to increase height. She fell for it, and while she didn't gain an inch in height, she did grow an impressive beard.

I'm not a fan of homeopathy but the truth is, it IS a form of alternative medicine. Just because we've had a massive revolution when it comes to antibiotics and medicine over the past century, it doesn't mean that all forms of alternative medicine having been practiced over thousands of years are filth and garbage.

Of course, there's no guarantee and to be very honest with you, I wouldn't go for homeopathic treatment until and unless I'm absolutely sure there's no solution or cure for the problem I have under traditional methods of treatment. I've seen cases of miraculous recoveries of people who went for homeopathic treatment but also some cases where nothing at all happened.

Homeopathy isn't a scam. It's just a form of alternative medicine and also it does not have the side effects conventional medicines have. For my grand parents we only use homeopathy medicines as they are really old and since homeopathy doesn't have any side effects they are easier for them to take.

Nehow as for hijama, it is wet cupping and I wouldn't say it is a cure for anything but it is good for your overall well being and blood circulation. I have done it a few times purely because it is a Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) but to be honest I have not felt any major change after getting it done.

Does anyone, other than a certified medical practitioner confirm whether homeopathy is all hocus pocus, or not?

I've seen people, even close relatives & friends, rave about the positive effects. Personally tried it a few times, never worked for me! Is it just placebo or is there more t it, apart from possibly borrowing some ayurveda or yoga concepts?

Michael Phelps is the walking advertisement of this Cupping Therapy/Pseudoscience which does not have any scientific backing. There is nothing like bad blood or toxins in blood, it's just the capillary blood (oxygenated & deoxygenated blood) which is being sucked out through skin. Detoxification can't be done by bleeding.

If anybody still want to let out their blood "to feel good", Please donate it to a blood bank. Atleast that would be helpful for a needy patient.

Had a similar problem. Tried everything. Pain killers, physiotherapy, anti inflammatories. Pain came suddenly, shot up the back of my thighs, all the way down to the ankle. Sometimes I even had to lie down on the floor in the supermarket. And like a light being switched off, as soon as I sat down or laid down, it would cease as suddenly as when it kicked in.

Until one Consultant decided to do an MRI scan of my back.

Apparently it was caused by a very minor fall I had some months previously which resulted in an 'annular tear' (some of the gel like fluid leaking from the disc). The surgeon explained to me that as the disc healed, (in layman's terms) it 'formed a small scab' which was touching a nerve when I stood up at a particular angle (with other people it may be when they sit down, or when they bend down ... etc). He performed some minor back surgery (one inch scar in my back), cleaned out 'the scab', and I've never had the pain since.

Exactly my point. I personally know people who had serious pains and problems that were cured with homeopathic treatments. An example would be my cousin who was suffering from severe acne and had visited all types of doctors in Dubai, Pakistan and England ranging from dermatologists to skin specialists yet not one of them could solve her problem without suggesting her meds that would be detrimental in the long run.

She went for homeopathic treatment and her acne became invisible in a matter of a few months! Now THAT cannot be placebo.

Traditional medicine is based on thousand years of experimenting... Many drugs sold by big dollar pharma companies are based on plants used in traditional medicine except plants are less harmful.... There is a reason why there are so many diseases in the west that didn’t exist before... So yes modern medicine has helped us a lot of course but you shouldn’t be blinded that it has failings too and not everything in herbal medicine and homeopathy is trash...

Also everyone has the right to use what they want... If doctor tells someone you can’t be cured why are you making fun of people for using homeopathy, there is no harm certainly not to you... Too many judgmental people who think everything in West is better...

The one performing the treatment needs to patent her remedy, then approach one of the big pharmaceuticals, show them some of the proof of it's success, ask them to do their own tests. He (or she) will become a billionaire!

These people can really make it big, I'm sure of it because you hear or such miraculous stories all the time.

I'm going to quote another example of a miraculous recovery with the use of homeopathy that I STILL struggle to believe. It really obfuscates me as to how this was possible. One of my father's friend's relative had 3rd stage cancer and all hospitals across Pakistan had told them that there was no way in hell that the man would survive let alone be cured.

To give it a last shot, the man consulted a homeopathic doctor and within a matter of weeks, he was able to walk again and in a few months, he was actually getting seriously better. Now if that isn't astounding, don't know what is!

Same point again. In this day and age, if the claims are true, then what's stopping these homeopathic doctors approaching major pharmaceutical companies with their "successful remedies"?

I'm of the opinion that you hear of their 'success cases' but not of the many more "unsuccesful cases", mainly because they're dead.

Homeopathy is a scam, its all pseudoscience

Do *NOT* waste your money on Homeopathy.

I share the skepticism on Homeopathy. BUT, I have seen it being extremely effective on my toddler daughter. My in-laws gave me a bunch of Homepathy medicines when they visited after she was born, and I was even a bit rude in telling them outright, that I don't believe in this, and I'm not going to give my child any medicine without really looking into it. My wife urged me to try giving my daughter the homeopathic pills for teething, when she started being extremely cranky due to the discomfort. Those who have young children will know that children go through a lot of pain and associated health issues when those teeth are coming out. Lot of kids even get frequent colds and even fever at times. There was an immediate and drastic impact of the teething pills with my daughter - to the extent that if we forgot to give her the pills for a day or so, we would know that we did, just from her behavior and symptoms. Now I can't even attribute this to the placebo effect, because a 11 month old baby doesn't even know that she is getting medicine, forget about what it is supposed to treat. When you see a 1 year old baby being cranky and in discomfort, asking for teethers frequently etc - switch to being calm and not needing the teethers at all - and the only difference being the homeopathy medicine, that's a damn good instance of this working.

In addition to this, I have also observed some benefit in using 'arnica' - its used for pain relief for injuries etc - with kids, and also in adults. This COULD be placebo effect, especially in the adults, but at a minimum, that medication won't really cause harm - its mostly a sugar pill, with some ingredient diluted to 'parts per million' i.e. such a small dose, that you don't have to worry about side-effects.

Bottomline? After my recent experiences, I wouldn't be so quick to just write off homeopathy and be open to considering its usage on a case by case basis. What I do, is for each medicine, I will research the medicine name, identify the active ingredient and its source, and then research that for possible side effects or toxicity. If there is no risk of harm, then maybe its worth a try.

Of course, silly claims like "increasing height" etc are just total quackery, and should never be taken seriously.

Excellent post.

I have experienced great changes with homeopathy when regular medicines simply weren't effective.

I would consider homeopathy on a case to case basis. Try it out and if it doesn't work, move on.

The problem with traditional medicines is that you can't take them forever. I was prescribed atleast 6 top most anti inflamitories, they did help me tremendously during hajj where my back pain, hamstring and leg pain was non-existent and i was able to walk so many km's, i even had physiotherapy and it appeared that the condition was improving but since getting off the painkillers it is basically back to square one again.

Taking painkillers all the time is not good as it can damage your kidneys as well. I had blood in my urine 2 days ago and had it tested and the doctor was like you need to come off the painkillers, can't keep taking them forever.

Savak Bro I have a disc slip (between L4 and L5) and sciatica pain for lat 9 years and it completely changed my life. Also with time it had an effect on my muscles and now I have back muscle pain in both upper and lower back which is sometimes extremely painful especially in winters. I used to be a very active and athletic person but not anymore.

I am really sorry and don't want to make you feel bad or feel scary but telling you so that you take good care of yourself. I didn't take care of myself in the start and ab bhugat rha hun. Do exercises, do swimming, and yes try homeopathic medicines too there is no side effect. Hopefully something works. It is a serious problem and only those who experience it knows how much painful it is. Even some doctors will say to you that it is not a big problem but it varies from person to person and how much the disc is outside. Remember if you dont take care then it can damage your muscles too so please take care.

Lastly, a good mattress and a good chair is very important. I don't know how much severe your problem is, but try to avoid lifting heavy weights. Try different exercises, and see which is good for your problem. And yes painkillers are only a temporary solution.

When I was a teen, I had tumour on my chest, and I thought it was malignant. But a doctor (homeopathy) told me that he will give me medicines so that the tumour would dissolve itself.. unlike the allopathic doctors whose only solution is to cut and remove. So I took the medicine for a few weeks and the tumour started becoming soft..but it would pain a lot, and I was sure I was going to die..so my father relented and went to the other doctor who had it removed. And the nurse wrapped the tumour in a bandage and handed it to me, asking me to take it home. But before I could show it to everyone, a rat ate it. I wonder how did I taste to the rat.

Sciatic pain is notoriously difficult to diagnose in terms of the root cause - a lot of times, its a combination of things that leads to it. People don't realize that having tight calf muscles and hamstrings can be a major contributing factor. If I were you, I would start stretching my calves 4-5 times a day. Properly. holding each stretch for 20+ seconds, graduating to those one legged stretches on stairs etc. That and a foam-roller on your hammies and quads. A couple of weeks of disciplined stretching and foam-rolling, might surprise you in terms of how much it can make things better.

Good luck. Pain sucks. Not being able to do the things you want to do, absolutely sucks.

Yes the secret ailments....code word for impotence.

And much more besides that. Going by how every wall is plastered with adverts for these miracle cures, one wonders how our people ever manage to procreate.

I have the beginnings of a short story scribbled away somewhere, based entirely on the veritable palimpsest formed by the juxtaposition of the medical, the political and the religious in the ads that get painted, pasted, or plastered one on top of the other.

Incidentally, this phenomenon precedes the creation of Pakistan. The late Patras Bukhari wrote somewhere about how the glue on these ads probably holds some of the more ramshackle buildings from falling apart, and probably save the owners quite a bit on maintenance.

Had a repeat MRI and it showed no improvement. My pain in my lower back and right leg went up 10 times and even worse than square one once i stopped taking the pain killers prescribed to me. The MRI is showing a herniated lower disc on the left and right lower back, where the right disc is touching the Sciatic nerve hence leading to a sharp shooting pain on the right leg.

The doctor is like if i want urgent immediate pain relief i.e. if i am sick and tired of dealing with this pain for 6 plus months and where i cannot deal with the fact that it is interfering with my daily functioning then i have the option of a disectomy where they will take out the herniated disc touching the Sciatic nerve and i will be painfree immediately on the same day. The other option is to continue the combination of painkillers and physiotherapy. He was like the ball is in your court. I for now will have to see and re-visit in 3-4 weeks time.

Should something like this require Istikhara?

I have a ticket for this so if anybody who can't make it would like any particular question posed I will try to get answers.

Ask them Is there any study or research on it? With proper control and no bias? From which blood vessel is the blood drawn out? How does the blood clot?

According to medical science, there is no impure blood in human body to draw out. There is only deoxygenated and oxygenated blood. About the argument that Hijama eliminates the toxic content in the body, kidneys and liver already serve that purpose then why we need to cut skin an invite more infection?

Thanks will make a note of these. I see they are particularly inviting health practitioners so there will be some detailed discussions during the day.

Health bosses have expressed "serious concerns" over the possible re-accreditation of the UK's largest group of registered homeopaths.

In a letter to the Professional Standards Authority, they said it gives "a false impression" to the public that their treatments are "clinically and scientifically established".

Homeopathy should not be recommended to the public, health chiefs say.

NHS England recommended that GPs stop providing it in 2017.

It says there is no good-quality evidence that homeopathy is effective as a treatment for any health condition.

The Society of Homeopaths said it would not be commenting while its re-accreditation was currently being considered.

'Fundamentally flawed'
Chief executive Simon Stevens and NHS national medical director Stephen Powis wrote to the Professional Standards Authority, saying: "This is a vital issue at a time when there is a rise of mis-information about vaccines - some of which is apparently promoted by homeopaths - and which poses a significant danger to human health.

"The basis of their practice remains fundamentally flawed," the letter said.

It went on to say that NHS England had issued guidance based on the latest clinical evidence "to ensure that patients are not prescribed items such as homeopathy that could be unsafe, ineffective or where there are more cost-effective alternatives".

Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative medicine, different from conventional treatments
NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens added: "Anything that gives homeopathy a veneer of credibility risks chancers being able to con more people into parting with their hard-earned cash in return for bogus treatments which at best do nothing, and at worst can be potentially dangerous.

He said homeopathy was "no replacement for rigorously tried and tested medical treatments, delivered or prescribed by properly-qualified professionals".

The NHS, the Chief Medical Officer and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence's position is that homeopathic remedies are not scientifically validated, or recommended to treat any health conditions.

But the government said around £55,000 was spent on NHS prescribing of homeopathic products last year.

Anyone can practise as a homeopath in the UK, without any qualifications or experience.

The Professional Standards Authority accredits organisations, such as the Society of Homeopaths, which have a register of homeopathy practitioners.

The authority said it did not comment on live cases or any applications currently being assessed.

Its decision to grant re-accreditation to the Society of Homeopaths earlier this year is set to be challenged in a judicial review by the Good Thinking Society.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is based on the concept that diluting a version of a substance that causes illness has healing properties.

So pollen or grass could be used to create a homeopathic hay-fever remedy.

One part of the substance is mixed with 99 parts of water or alcohol, and this is repeated six times in a "6c" formulation or 30 times in a "30c" formulation.

The end result is combined with a lactose (sugar) tablet.

Homeopaths say the more diluted it is, the greater the effect.

Common homeopathic treatments are for asthma, ear infections, hay fever, depression, stress, anxiety, allergy and arthritis.

The NHS itself says: "There is no good-quality evidence that homeopathy is effective as a treatment for any health condition."

Homeopathy is an absolute life saver!

My eczema got really bad this year and these steroids were a nightmare.

I tried 3 or 4 different homeopaths and I finally struck gold.

The homeopath was really old, so most likely to be really experienced and it took a few months for it to clear, but it did get worse before it healed and I had to resist for a certain period, however I'm really glad.

You need to strictly follow the advice given, making sure to take the medication as prescribed by your homeopath and no laziness should be involved or have the mentality of "I'll take it later, won't make a difference" because it does make a difference and can change the effectiveness of the medication.

PS: Yep, so called Desi homeopathy "doctors" are a bunch of charlatans, creeps and sometimes paedophiles.

Are we permitted to talk about CBD and THC oils? CBD is legal in the UK, and THC is legal for medicinal use in the UK. Though in Canada such products are fully legal, as well in some US states.

There are some amazing stories providing empirical evidence of the benefits of said oils. There is a documentary on Netflix (I cannot remember the name at the moment) but it follows the stories of a few children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Their parents have a choice to pursue with the traditional treatment (Chemo, Radio, MRI etc) OR orally administer CBD/THC oils.

The result? Without ruining the documentary, one child had a brain tumor and this thing VANISHED in a few months after daily doses of oil.

Such is the effect that THC/CBD is now challenging the big pharma in the USA. Simply, if said oils can prevent cancer, then big pharma companies will lose out, why? They cannot patent a plant.

For me, I have been vaping CBD oil and it has done absolute wonders for me. I sleep better, my digestive system is top notch, muscular pains gone, and I feel fine as daisy on a daily basis.

I refuse to consume synthesized pharmaceuticals! Never!

How is Hijama safe? Those people who work around blood are not even doctors.

Also there is a reason why Homeopathic has success in Pakistan. There is alot of mistrust. People dont trust medicine here due to fake medicine often being given out here.

Homeopathic is just a placebo nothing else. See, you dont have to be a doctor to give out homeopathic medicine. My late grandfather used to have homeopathic. What was funny was if Daktaar saab wast there, he would ask his wife to make those puris :))).

No, her parents were livid when they found out, and she had to see a hormonal specialist in Islamabad to reverse whatever that supposed medication had done to her. Until she was cured though, she wore a hijab and was a regular at the local salon getting the beard plucked.

To be fair, the mail-order medication she took wasn’t really homeopathic, because if it were, it would’ve done her no good and no harm and would only have been a waste of money and time. However, given how people assume homeopathy works miracles, all sorts of shady concoctions are passed off as homeopathy, like the muscle builders that were really anabolic steroids that I mentioned in my original post.

Another anecdote a coworker shared recently involved a lady he was seeing. The lady had a rather rambunctious two year old, and because she was into “alternative healing,” found some supposed homeopathic treatment online to calm the child. It worked: no more tantrums, hyperactivity, and aggression.

My coworker looked into the medication. The dilutant into which the homeopathic “medicine” had been mixed was... alcohol. The child was basically too drunk to engage in his previous hyperactive behavior.

Which brand do you use and what is the content?

I use 2500mg (25%) & 5000mg (50%) full organic spectrum concentration for CBD oil. The brand I use is actually manufactured by a few chemists just making money to pay off their debts! The strength they make however if the highest concentration and comes with a warning - (you must not drive) and is not available with other brans from what I have seen.

However I also use Aztec. I have read and heard it is the best in terms of global availability and quality and to be honest, for 1000mg (10%) it is the best. They do up to 1000mg, but definitely worth checking out. They do both vape and drop forms. https://azteccbd.co.uk/

I consider myself an expert on eczema, having had it all my life and tried every medicine going.

Homeopathy did not help.

May I ask what your course of treatment was?

sorry to say, but why people are taking dig at homeopathy ? there are many people in my family and friends who got benefit by using this treatment.
my cousin had eczema problem, now its gone after 1 year of treatment.
my dad had serious dust allergy when he was younger, he tried the homeopathy for 1 or 2 years. now in his old age, he feels fine.
my friend had some liver problem, he couldnt eat much becoz of it. he tried it for 2/3 years, now he feels better. his health is good.
2 people i know who had Sciatic pain, after the treatment, one is completely fine now, other is still taking medicine, but he said its better thn operation. becoz he had the operation which wasnt much successful.

and all cases i mentioned above, are treated with homeopathy with different doctors and with different medicines.

The issue is, people here are including homeopathy with other forms of hocus pocus alternative medicine.

Homeopathy is actually based upon biochemistry. Same biochemistry which also drives general pharmacology. And homeopathy never claims not to have side effects.

Having said that, I'll keep homeopathy localized to pimples, itch, acne, simple cough etc. Because it doesn't have any means to treat emergency.

I was given Sulphur/Petroleum x200 and Hydrocotyle Q (liquid).

Worked wonders for me, however I wasn't born with it and I don't know if the medication may differ for you.

My advice would be, to go to a professional and try different homeopaths. Also, take it when you have time off work because it gets worse before it starts to heal, hence you may need the time off and you need to be super resistant, meaning don't resort to the use of steroids for a quick relief.

I did extensive research and found many others spoke about the success of homeopathy, therefore tried it myself again.

If you have been using steroids for a long time, then it is going to get really bad for you because steroids only suppress it and homeopathy is about eliminating it.

Another anecdote a coworker shared recently involved a lady he was seeing. That's similar to Pathan mothers (not generalizing) giving opium to kids; provided by local "hekeem".

Never!

CBD/THC industry moves billions and is exponentially increasing. The main players are pushing subliminal marketing.

So take the tumor vanishing with a grain of salt and these kind of documentaries make me angry because they give false hope to desperate cancer patients.

I consumed some as well, drops, and didn't notice anything. Heck, olive oil is better than CBD if you ask me. Not attacking you; just setting the record straight for readers.

I have no doubt the industry will explode in the years to come. I mean we have the likes of Malaysia even debating CBD/THC for medical use.

Now I am not saying THC/CDB is a cure for cancer, but for the first time in medical history we have empirical evidence of a tumor dying based on natural products. This is huge, and disruptive news to the pharma industry. So much so, the NHS in the UK have information on it etc.

When I first tried CBD, I felt zilch, I tried the 250mg concentration. I complained to the guy and that's when he upped the concentration to 1000mg and 2500mg. A couple of vapes and I feel the effects almost instantly. In fact, my mother was having trouble sleeping, and a couple of drops of 2500mg concentration, and she was out like a baby and fresh in the morning.

I didn't think Olive oil would be in the same class as CBD and THC given the later include cannaboids which attract to the cannabinoid receptors in our body. It's like a key and lock, and this is biologically demonstrated. So the science is there but I doubt big pharama would fund THC/CBD research.

It isn’t uncommon among other ethnicities either. My great-grandmother was known to give her kids tiny bits of opium so she could go supervise the peasants in the fields.

I suppose these days one could just hand the kids a cellphone...
