Seems to have been very down and dejected lately and even announced that this could be last World Cup. Seems to have lost all hope in his team and team mates. Hopefully he doesn't go out on such a low after having such a career.

He would have been more motivated had he been playing for the Spanish national side or Barcelona

He has to take some of the blame. Whatever the formation, whoever your team mates are, the star player has to produce. At times Messi has looked disinterested and all at sea.

Today he was playing centre half at times.

Absolute shambles.

Messi had played a big part in taking his side to the final in the last world cup. But nothing seems to be working for this Argentina side. Messi was not good in the first match but he was there and had a number of tries on goal. In the match against Croatia , it was as if he was benched and was simply not there. There also seems to be some confusion and disagreement between team combination. Most Argentinians wanted Dybala alongside Messi in the starting XI against the wishes of team itself.
Argentina have quite a few loopholes in their side, very mediocre midfield is one of the big reasons that Messi had to draw back to receive ball. They were just too dependent on Messi when he did not have a good start the weak links became more evident.

Indian man cycles to Russia to meet Messi

Clifin Francis, an Indian, cycled all the way from Iran to Russia to watch the FIFA World Cup.

Francis was sitting at home in southern India when a friend asked if he was going to the football extravaganza.

“Of course,” he replied. “I might even travel to Russia to watch the it.”
This was in August when he knew that he could not afford the air tickets from Kerala.

“I realised I wouldn’t have enough money to travel to Russia and stay for a month. Then I asked myself what could be the cheapest way of travelling? Bicycle was the answer”.

He was adamant on going, however, his parents were not convinced.

He set out on February 23, where he flew to Dubai taking a ferry that took him to Iran from there.

Notwithstanding, the Russian capital which is still 4,200km away if you take a bike.

What he gained at the end of it, a chance to see Argentina’s Lionel Messi, one of the best footballer in the world

“I love cycling and I am crazy about football. I simply combined two of my passions,”Francis says.

Currently, he has made it to Tambov as of now, which is a city 460km south of Moscow by road. In order for him to be there for France against Denmark match he should be in the capital till June 26.

“It’s the only game I managed to get tickets for,” he said.

“But I support Argentina and Lionel Messi is my favourite I worship him. It’s my dream to meet him and ask him to sign my bicycle,” he added.

Francis is pretty hopeful that his journey will inspire enough people for football and as well as fitness.

Looks like he’ll have to travel back home very soon.

For the sake of his mental health he should retire from international football

As good as Messi is he can't do it all on his own. Past great Argie sides had other good players supporting the brilliant Maradona. This one is so bad that even an incredibly overweight Maradona would walk in to it:yk

Are Dybala, Higuain, Di Maria, Banega, Mascherano and Otamendi bad?

If Ronaldo can do it all alone while playing with 10 mediocre EPL rejects why cant Messi do it with some of the best attackers in europe. OHH i guess hes not that good after all.

He doesn't look happy at all does he.

Looks like a frustrated man who is not happy with the formation or his team mates.

People need to stop making excuses for Messi, if he was a real leader like ronaldo he would push his team for a win. Messi isn't a leader.

I don't get what is so special about CR7? - If you are talking about R9, I can understand, who had actually won a WC and was robbed in the first won, with one of the biggest mystery in the history of soccer, when he was found unconscious day of the final, incidentally playing against host :(

CR7 and Messi are both not that great leader or special players as far as WC is concerned. They have not done much in last 3 WCs...CR7 has hard time against Iran, don't tell me he does not have team to beat even Iran...WC has just now begun, they both will do pretty much nothing, they will go home in next or at the most QFs...

They play for best clubs in the world, with star stud lineup, with or without them, their clubs will be keep on winning, with the money they have...I still don't get how they got so many FIFA player of the years award in last decade, they never looked like GOAT in WCs... They are far cry from guys like Maradona, even they are not match to Zidane, Ronaldo or many other Brazilian and Spanish greats from last two decades... What worked for them is that they played in the Golden Era of Spanish football, they happen to be part of those two clubs...

Last chance for him to prove something today. He could help Argentina avoid complete embarrassment.

He seemed fired-up today.

Perhaps it was due to the fact that he picked the team himself and sorted out the formation too.

It's pretty clear now that Messi is running the show now in this squad.

Oh and the way he took the goal today was just pure class, the run, the first touch, the control and then the finish - amazing.

well he completly faded away in the second half, you can argue his service cut down but so many misplaced passes, a player of his calibre has to keep the momentum up.

Hahaha, the bitterness is heavy on this one yet people think Ronaldo fans are reasonable in comparison to Messi fans.

Messi showed his class yesterday. But a stronger performance needed from him if Argentina are to beat France.

Whilst your post proves otherwise BUT I understand seeing Messi score a class goal and have a good game must have crushed you.

Well i was only talking about the second half where he was terrible so it shows where the bitterness is

Matter of time before Ronaldo and Messi pack their bags. Neither of their team is going to reach top 8.

The fact that you resorted to discussing the second half instead of praising his goal and overall performance is what highlights the bitterness.

Don't worry I understand it must hurt.

I can't see Argentina beating France, although the keeper looked better the defence was still all over the place.

I do think Portugal have a chance as they play on the counter attack and it might just be effective against Uruguay.
