Has PCB missed a gold pot by ignoring the U19 team of 2006?

Hello!
When Pakistan won their first gold in 1992, among all the dances and celebrations, a new wave of crickets was being stitched into the fabric of life. The one with flaming passion. Moving forward to the 2006 U19 WC final, just by looking at its scorecard, you'll know that it had some serious players in the XI. Even at that time many people felt that u19 team was as good as international XI if not better (barring MoYo, Inzi and MoAsif). Any sensible board would have moved 70% of the U19 team in playing XI during next 3 4 years. But we can see that that even the captain of that team got a proper run after 8-9 years of that victory and we all can see the results. Sure, there were many improvements to be made in that team but they had time on their side to improve much. Now there's very little good on bringing 30+ performers of same team with very little (Sarfi, Haris etc) or even worse (Anwar Ali) improvements. On the other hand. India banked over some of their u19 stars and results are there for everyone to know (Kohli, Sharma, Raina, Yuvi etc).

Are we decade too late to realize the potentional that team had? Or you feel that much of the team was going to fade away anyway?

youngsters are future.. pcb of late 2000s was the worst working organistion with no vision at all.

PCB of that time was extremely inefficient and corrupt especially during Butt era...2013 to 2016 was also poor due to chairman musical chair..

Despite that these youngsters were given a lot of chances apart from 2 bowlers

Misbah and Afridi also never groomed any of them to develop...the captain musical chairs in the butt era also didn't help

Instead they invested on the 2008 batch,the most mentally disturbed unit we had produced with players like U.kmal,A.Shehzad etc

Under the current PCB I felt they would have gotten the same reception as the senior side did after the CT...Half of that side would have been picked for the senior team..

PCB of 1953 to 2016 was the worst organisation...the new constitution brought much needed stability to it..

Now no idiot like Butt can singlehandedly run the board..although still some improvements are needed..

how did PCB ignored the team of 2006 ? Don't we have Sarfraz as captain ? Didn't Anwar Ali play for the International team ?

There is a time for drafting players. 2004 & 2006 players were best young talents in their generation, so obviously many of them should make the national team, no surprises in that. Question is when - were those players drafted at right time? This is where I don’t think it was enough. Rather, I think 2008 team was much more lucky. If I can recall correctly, 2008 team lost to SAF in SF - from that team, I think 8 or 9 players made PAK team in next 3-5 years. Few even before the next tournament.

Shehzad, Amir, Umar played for PAK by Jan 2010 (next tournament); one by one in next few years JK, Amin, Shan, Sallauddin and last one was probably Imad. So 5 players in 3 years and 8 in total. Compared to that, I have to say 2004 & 2006 teams were less fortunate and delayed much more than they should had been. Few of the players never got the chance either - Jamshed Ahmed, Tariq Mahmood, Shahzaib )probably from 2006 or 08, not sure) comes to mind.

There use to be a strong lad called Akhtar Ayub and he was quick! He could have been an amazing pacer if not for the PCB. I wonder what he's up to now.

But late 2000s was the worst of the worst... ruined careers by suspending players left right and centre.. All the captaincy drama.

There use to be a strong lad called Akhtar Ayub and he was quick! He could have been an amazing pacer if not for the PCB. I wonder what he's up to now.

Akhtar Ayub was one of the most promising stars of that 2006 batch. He had very good pace, strong broad shoulders, could swing the ball and make it go off the pitch as well (due to very neat release + heavy wrists).

What he didn't have was strong political background or somebody in his family that knew the right people. He was also was from an extremely humble and modest family (financial speaking) and hailed from a place called Langer in Attock (Punjab).

Straight out of the U-19 campaign he was signed by KRL (I may be wrong about this, need to confirm this) and this department essentially ruined his career completely. They made him play <40 FC games in 5-6 years which is just worthy. He was never given a proper run and was lost into the wilderness like many others during the mid-2000s by the management and curropt departments.

I remember reading an article sometime back on Pakpassion regarding this entire story where he claimed that KRL (or whichever dept he was representing at the time, apologies if there is a mistake in the name) had a deep rooted sernior culture where all opportunties were given to seniors and players like Akthar Ayub were just mere fillers whenever some main bowler had an injury or was away for International duty - Not surprising to hear that tbh and completely understandable since just recently we had a '33' year old break an FC record

I think this lad might have left cricket (which would be very very sad) as his last FC game was in 2015 while representing SNGPL where he featured in the same game as Mohammad Amir who took a 5-fer in one of the innings. A extremely disappoointing end tbh and these are the type of injustices which really makes my blood boil to the core!!

The only real platform that he ever got to showcase his skills (after that U-19 campaign) was in a domestic T20 competition representing Rawalpindi Rams but by the time this kid's hunger, the passion and the drive (which is at it's peak during the teens and early 20s) had almost faded but even still he did ok. A real loss for Pakistan!!
