Hashim Amla vs Ross Taylor - Who is better batsman?

Statistically,

Amla averages 50 in ODIs and 47 in tests while Taylor averages 46 in ODIs and tests both. 3 years ago, Amla would have won by a fair margin but I think it is close now.

In the last few years, Taylor had late resurgence and has played some fantastic innings in both the formats. To name a few, 290 at Perth against Australia, the hundred vs England this year in ODI and quite a few more.

Who is a better batsmen considering all formats now?

For a top order batsmen, an average of 47 is still excellent considering that he plays half of his games in South African conditions.

Before decline, his average of 51 was equivalent to an average of 55 for a middle order batsmen.

Taylor underachieved somewhat. But this comparison is closer than people think. Amla did play in a very strong SA team unlike Taylor.

Hard to say who is "better" but I will say this - Ross Taylor is quite underrated.

If he was Indian or Pakistani people would be calling him an Asian ATG.

I will pick Taylor in ODIs but in tests has to be Amla.

Amla has scored plenty of tough runs and across different conditions in test cricket. Ofcourse, he hasn't scored those runs against the likes of McGrath, Warne, Steyn but he has dominated the likes of Anderson, Broad, Johnson, Harris, Ajmal,Herath, Swann, Harbhajan (in India) and is one of the best players of swing bowling as well.

In contrast, Taylor, in tests, has a very poor average of 7 in South africa and 25 in India and also has inflated his stats by averaging 258 vs Zimbabwe. I cant get how one can rate Ross ahead of Amla in tests.

Amla is easily better than Taylor in test, there is nothing controversial about it.

In tests Amla is well ahead. In LO I'll go with Taylor. Overall Amla is the better batter.

Amla's is worse, but Taylor is hardly a big game player

Not talking about World Cups specifically. I have found Amla to be a poor chaser as well, especially when it comes to chasing big totals.

For example, the 181* that Taylor pulled off against England few months earlier limping on leg. Amla cannot play a knock like that in a thousand years, and nor can he switch gears like Taylor, who took Shoaib to the cleaners in the 2011 World Cup, combining with Jacob Oram to score over a 100 runs in the last 5 overs.

Taylor has not done justice to his talent, but I would pick him over Amla in my ODI team, especially if it is a big game or if a big total has to be chased.
