What's new

Have any of you gone on vacation alone?

just came back from budapest hungary all by myself during xmas holiday however what is the main purpose of your question?

Like no family or friends, just a short trip by yourself?

Sure, some people travel the world alone. Always better to have someone with you but if you have a few days spare and nobody is free, go for it!

Where are you thinking of going?

Somewhere within the country but like another state.

Traveled to almost half the planet alone (or sometimes with a couple of friends) in my youth. (Staff tickets helped a lot) Nothing opens ones eyes and mind when experiencing other people and their customs, history and culture. I would advice to do as much traveling as possible while young and/or single as it gets harder later on.

How hard is it to travel alone? Like are you more likely to be mugged/kidnapped?

Depends upon where you travel to, you could get mugged but that is part of the package and experience. Kidnapping is very rare but again depends on where you're going to. I was threatened by a some hustlers a couple of times but I kept my wits.

As for how hard it is to travel alone, it really depends on you and the type of trip. I like to keep mostly to myself and used to travel alone when exploring new places so I didn't have to be inconvenienced by other peoples schedules, but had a couple of close friends along if it was more of a fun/adventurous place.

Traveled extensively on my own.

I spent a year travelling SE Asia. A year in South and Central America.

I had friends meet me for short periods along the way.

You make lots of friends as there other travellers that are pretty easy to spot.

Backpacked through Europe alone during the summer between year 1 and year 2 of my MBA. One of the best travel experiences I gotta say. I stayed in hostels, bought one of those Euro Rail passes (great bang for the buck). When we travel alone we are forced to interact with outsiders all the time in social contexts and this helps us interact with people of so many diverse backgrounds and learn more.

I would recommend experiencing traveling alone in a foreign land at least once.

Inter railing?

My friends and I did that when we were 18. It was a great experience.

Yep, Inter-rail. Those unlimited (within a month) train passes were only available for non-EU residents as a tourism promo from what I recall.

They were available in the EU too but couldn’t be used in the country of purchase or something along those lines.

I think ours were for 3 months.

Great memories.

Travelling around the world sounds great. However, it's not for everybody. The main object is managing and mantaining finances which is not possible without having a proper job and a steady source of income. it's not that easy to just up and leave to see the planet when there are other responsibilities.
I have only just been able to start fulfilling my dream of seeing the world at the age of 28 but it's possible due to having a job that gives me the flexibility to work from home.

If traveling internationaly and backpacking would suggest you to have someone knit a pocket on the inside of your pants where you can keep your passport safely and not worry about it

No I never gone on vacation alone but I go to zoo, botanical garden(when there is exhibition going on) alone.

Not for vacation but often on work-related trips roam around alone or during the weekends travel and see the new city or area.

I think it is more fun if you can enjoy yourself also often you end up having some discussions with locals if you are the type.

I was working at Emirates at the time, so I had to only pay 10% of the original price for a staff Grade 12 and below ticket. Also my shift was 2/2/2 days and then 3 days off which I saved 2 days and after a month and half or so went to a new country to visit for 10 to 12 days. Also we got discounts in most hotels, car rentals, etc in most countries so that helped a lot too.

I still get a staff ticket but only once an year because my brother still works there but haven't used one in a couple of years. Quite busy with the business and family and the places we travel to in Europe are fairly nearby by car or we just use local flights.

Never by myself, has either been with friends in younger days, or partner/family nowadays. I have thought I would like to do it though, it is somewhat restricting when you are with someone else, because you have to take their preferences into consideration as well. Although still prefer to do it with company, but can see the attraction.

I study in Europe, so its only natural to travel, so travelling is almost a must.
If you are worried don't be, there is really nothing to be afraid of. Especially in 2020, it is alot easier than you would expect. Its really not that different.

I think travelling alone is more boring though, you need friends to travel with, they amplify your experiences

I have a South African friend who has travelled 20 countries by himself during studies

I dont know if you are a university student, but if you are , it is really worth going on a n exchange semester(even pakistani universities offer this). You can travel for a long period even if you are out of uni.
Travelling abroad is a once in a lifetime experience that I think is necessary for everyone .

Just remebmer to manage your finances properly.

Travelled a few times overseas by myself and I really enjoyed it.

You put yourself out there a lot more in social interactions.

You also learn more about the local culture because you are interacting with them rather than friends.

I do enjoy my own company though.
