I personally have not but have heard a lot about the prestige and legend of restaurants being Mechelin starred.

I have heard most of them are very customized and usually run by private chefs who caters to the tastes and requirements of their clients - unlike most restaurants which usually have standard menus.

They are are also very pricey and most usually require reservations in advance.

Discuss your experience with Michelin starred restaurants!

This one. A Japanese restaurant in New York

my first boss took us there after closing of a deal (at end of my first six months on the job). Apparently it had been booked a week in advance but normally it takes almost a month if you don't pull strings.

I think it came to over $800 per person but it prolly went up that high due to drinks (sake) the other folks had.

Its definitely the best sushi Ive ever had but Ive had sushi of similar quality for around $100 so I'm not sure what warranted the price going up almost 7 times. There was one appetizer (beef tataki) which was unreal.

But as i said i dunno whether i would pay that much for food no matter how successful I am. And generally i am somewhat more liberal in spending money on such experiences compared to friends and family.

800$ per person for 1 meal. That's. . . A lot.

i felt pretty out of place tbh

but apparently its common for michelin starred restaurants to be this price range (30% or so of the cost is alcohol though)

was it worth the customer satisfaction?

Went to Galvin at Windows in Park Lane in London for a team Christmas dinner last December. Food was pretty good but the overall experience in terms of ambience and the attention you receive from the waiting staff is what made it special. The bill came to around £200 per person (including drinks). It is pretty standard to end up in restaurants such as these to celebrate the end of a project or winning a new contract when you work in finance. Luckily, I did not have to contribute towards the bill and I would never personally go to a restaurant this high-end unless it is a super-special occasion.

Madness.

It's all the same food but suckers pay through the nose for it.

To think this was simply a gimmick started by the Michelin tyre company to get people to drive and wear out their tyres.

I could never justify spending that much money on food.

Don't care how rich I am.

Yes, in London, over rated to the max.

Food is about presentation, but lacking taste, and frankly awful. I would go home and dig into daal parhata which would taste 10 times better.

Food was unreal

But nothing can be worth that money.

I didn't pay so I guess didn't matter. It was expenses to a client

Agree with you. Food at 2 or 3 star Michelin restaurants are without a shadow of doubt amazing. But not worth the expense. But I reckon 1 star Michelin restaurants generally do fine.

I've had food at 1 star ones where I've paid £60-70 per head (without alcohol, of course!)

60-70 is still acceptable I would say

I had food at two posh restaurants, both paid for by firms we used. I don't know if they were Michelin starred, but they had big reputations in the city. I ordered seafood both times, one was decent, although nothing special, the other one....I'm not kidding, I enjoyed McDonalds fillet o fish meal more.

Yeah. Luckily, in London there are a few that meet the quality and price for a 1 star Michelin.

tbh, $800 per head is way too expensive. Sake, though is also way too overpriced in the west. Never been to Japan, but I doubt it will be as expensive as in the west. Reckon, at least $300 of what you had was Sake. I ordered a decent bottle of Sake last night in an average Sushi (extremely average; a sushi officianado - and I am not one, would not go there again) restaurant last night, and paid €45 for 300ml bottle. Was about €100 for a 750 ml.
Ridiculous pricing!!

Multiple times. Junoon (Indian) and Ai Fiori (Italian) most recently. The food, the ambiance, the presentation was just outstanding.

They are crazily expensive though, so I'd probably never go there on my own dime. But totally worth it when you can expense it to your employer.

Would you say it’s the best place you have ever eaten at?

I went to Ai Fiori in NYC, it's got one Michelin star. Decent 4 course meal, about $150-$200 per person so one of the more budget-friendly options (when compared to other Michelin starred restaurants lol).

Food was nice and filling, ambiance was good, no lack of attention from waitstaff, but I suppose having eaten Pakistani food all my life, I'll probably take White Karahi at Boat Basin (Karachi) over refined modern Italian food most days of the week. I did enjoy it it though.

It's good for once in a year occasion like Valentine's Day or someting like that if you can afford it. Gives a reason to dress up and do/eat something you probably dont eat too often.

Second.

Best food I have ever had was karahi in a roadside open air restaurant in Abbotabad. I'm not sure whether it was really as good as I remember it but we had been driving for 5-6 hours and hadn't eaten for a whole day. So maybe that blinkers my memory but man everytime I have karahi that's the first thing that comes to my mind. I've been trying to find its name on google but haven't been able to.

Certainly most satisfying experience ever. There were 4 of us and we ate and ate and ate :))

It wasn't expensive per se but for abbotabad it seemed on the higher end

I once ate at a roadside drivers’ hotel/dhaaba that had a billboard with the Michelin Man on it. Does that count?

Lol, I have seen one of these roadside Michelin restaurants as well. May have eaten there, may have not, its all a blur now.

This was before the era of ubiquitous cellphone usage, selfies, and Instagram posts, or I would’ve had pictorial evidence of my meal at that fine establishment.

I don’t know if Michelin still uses the Michelin Man in its adverts. It was a man, made out of tires. There were a number of billboards with this character on the GT Road, and one of them happened to be right above this driver hotel. The connection to the Michelin stars was probably lost on the proprietor. The billboard was probably meant more for the truckers who frequented the place than to any passing gourmands.

Oh nice!

I would definitely rank a Thai restaurant I ate at in Dallas as the best place I have eaten.

Would even consider taking a trip to Dallas for the weekend just to eat at that place again LOL

Even if I had a cell phone which could take pictures back then, I doubt if I would have taken a selfie of myself posing next to the Michelin Man dhaba. See, unlike most people, I was not eating at those road side 'restaurants' to prove my foodie credentials. Neither was I a fashionable well-off kid from a posh place descending on such places to prove my authenticity or claim some kind of cultural relevance.

I was eating there cause I was partly homeless and was living on a shoe string budget. Unless, I could consider myself as some happy go lucky guy, which I am not, those were tough times and taking selfies next to places which scream of life's miseries and cruelness, its hard to think of doing something as abominable as saving that moment for an eternity.

I see your point. But my comment on the potential selfie opportunity at the dhaaba was meant as an expression of my refusal to be drawn into the supposed prestige of having dined at a real Michelin-starred restaurant.

Nah, would only bother with something like this if it was for a milestone (big wedding anniversary, wife’s 40th etc) OR if somebody else was paying the bill.

Give me a cheap greasy tasty takeaway any day.

Once. My boss paid the bill (as you can expect :yk ).

Perfect light. The ambient was impeccable. Best service I had in life.

That said, some Lidl butter and a can of Saag prepared with olive oil and some seasoning alongside ghee paratha is 10x better than the actual food I ate. Bonus points: Lassi

I guess we, the Desis, eat top quality food :inzi

Honestly we desis don't realize how delicious our food is. Majority off world's foods cannot stack up against a well made Nihari or Karhai or Biryani.

Also causes blockage of arteries. But its worth every chew.

Valencian Paella* is the closest foreign food I ever ate to compete with Biryani.

Still it was like comparing SRT to Ahmed Shehzad :yk Desi Food for life.

*Not the one they sell in restaurants. Mother of a good friend of mine especially prepared the feast for me :D
