"Haven't come here as a political person but as messenger of friendship, peace, goodwill" : NS Sidhu

LAHORE: Former Indian cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu arrived in Pakistan on Friday to attend the oath-taking ceremony of prime minister-in-waiting Imran Khan.

Sidhu arrived in Lahore via Wagah border and will travel to Islamabad for the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for August 18.

Speaking to reporters in Lahore, Sidhu welcomed the 'change' in Pakistan brought about by the advent of the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government.

"I have come to Pakistan on my friend's [Imran] invitation. These are very special moments," Sidhu said.

"Hindustan jeevey, Pakistan jeevey!" he chanted.

Imran, a former Pakistan Test captain who founded PTI in 1996, is expected to be sworn in as prime minister on Saturday after his party swept the July 25 general elections.

Earlier this week, former Indian captain Kapil Dev said he will not be attending the oath-taking ceremony, citing ‘personal reasons’.

Dev was one of the three cricketers from India invited to attend the leader’s swearing-in ceremony, along with Sidhu and Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar also declined Imran's invite due to his commentary commitments for the ongoing Test series between England and India.

The newly-elected members of the National Assembly will vote for the country's next prime minister today. Imran Khan is contesting against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz president Shehbaz Sharif, but the race is believed to have been won by the PTI nominee already due to a fallout among opposition parties.

Respect.

Must have many guts to still come over to PK after knowing what will happen when he goes back.

Will prove to be an iconic image. With one small step, Siddhu has dwarfed the jingos and shown that grace and civility is still alive in some corners of India.

Doubt he will have a place to call home after he returns, most likely will be branded a traitor and asked to stat back in Pakistan.

Most of the replies to this tweet are telling him not to come back. :virat

Because Modi didn't find a place to call home after his informal visit to celebrate Sharif's birthday?

Very dangerous for him to do it nowadays when peoples talk of Khalistan.

I hope Mr. Sidhu doesn't face a huge backlash at home

Have to feel sorry for Mr Sidhu after the bold step taken by him. The backlash against him for this decision is severe and expected to get worse. Maybe he will spend rest of his life with the badge of being a Traitor.

Disappointed with Kapil paaji though who turned down the offer fearing backlash from the people.

Respect to Sidhu for this kind gesture, we share so many cultural similarities with our Sikh brothers given us Punjabis have same castes, traditions, language, food etc.

Respect to Sidhu. Im glad he came.

Indians re probably burning right now

Nothing surprising here. The Sikhs have always been large hearted people who will love you back beyond words if you give them love and respect. They are driven by passions and Siddhu is just showcasing his passion for his friendship with Imran.

Is it just me or does a Sikh person look hella classy if they match their tie and pagri like Sidhu has done.

great stuff from Sidhu in the presser.. really heartening

hopefully he isn't harassed when he gets back home by the semi-retarted Indian media

It was funny to see Gavasker's interview about going to Pak for IK's inaugaration. Looked like they had a gun to his head and told him to say no. Indian government and media scaring legends about not going to Pakistan lol.

Yes ,most of them are very fashionable nowadays, Google Singh Style(UK) ,I think that page has always had huge following, and many in Delhi dress up like that as well.

It's a pity some members here still think that he is visiting Pakistan because he is from the opposition party.

It’s a good thing that some prominent Indians have attended Khan’s swearing in however I’m surprised that Sidhu skipped Vajpayee’s funeral to do so (given that the latter launched the formers political career). Anyway it’s his own decision at the end of the day and I hope he’s not criticised for it back home.

The invitation came a lot earlier.

Anyone know if Khan’s kids attended the ceremony?

Jemima was asked this question many times today and here is what she replied.

On Jemima Khan's twitter, lots of people were asking her and she was claiming that the kids really wanted to go but Imran Khan didn't let them.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has arrived in Pakistan walking through the Wagah-Attari border. He's already departed for Islamabad for tomorrow's oath taking ceremony.

Good move, was thinking about this earlier that what's gonna be the security / safety situation now for his kids and ex-wife. As soon as you assume a position of power like PM or President in other countries, every set of eyes with good and bad intentions is on you. If you are already famous, well, you can only imagine how much attention you will get.

During a press conference, surrounded by ex-cricketer Rameez Raja and PTI leader Faisal Javed, Sidhu begins by making Punjab-related references, which will certainly irritate the 98% of Indians who aren't Punjabis and will see this peace love affair as mainly an ethnocentric endeavor, like in Bollywood where it's the dominating Punjabis who want peace with the other side of the Wagah :

I think Indians are (and should) more focused on the tragedy in Kerala and how best to contribute to help the people there.

Punjabis hate Pakistan, don't go by Bollywood who are in there only for money. Most South Indians (and some from East) are more positive when it comes to relations with Pakistan. Moreover you can't make generalizations like that. All communists irrespective of where they come from are more friendly when it comes to neighboring country.

All Indians hate Pak and vice-versa, but there are some Punjabis in India, mainly Sikhs (because their 'Mecca' is in Pak Punjab), who hold positive views about Pak, and I think that non-Punjabi Indians will always find this suspect, esp. for Sikhs (Khalistan issue). You can see the same polarization in the comment sections of the different videos on Sidhu in Pak, Sikh names supporting him while the 'Kumars' call him ghadar.

Contrast this Punjabi report with Indian one :

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iZhBRaW9JyE" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And comments are all positive, with one being "sidhu and bajwa both are from punjabi race".

I am saddened and angered by the Ind reaction towards Sidhu and in general towards IK. We hear all the time Inds are desperate for peace but from where i am standing, it seems the comfort of a cold war is what they are looking for.

Cricket bat presented to Imran signed by Indian team on South Africa tour

A CRICKET bat presented to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan by Indian High Commissioner to Islamabad Ajay Bisaria earlier this month was signed by the Indian cricket team during its South Africa tour. Khan took oath as the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan on Saturday.

Sources told The Indian Express that once the election schedule in Pakistan, including the formation of a caretaker government, was announced in May the Indian High Commissioner was keen to open lines of communication with all major political parties there. As a part of the preparation for these meetings, Bisaria had requested his friend Rahul Johri, the CEO of Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), for three bats autographed by the Indian cricket team.

Johri had send Bisaria the bats signed by the Indian team during its South Africa tour — from end-December last year to late February this year.

As Khan was busy with the election campaign, Khan and Bisaria met at the Iftaar party where the Indian High Commissioner was seated next to the former Pakistan cricket captain.

Bisaria, sources said, had asked Khan for a meeting and informed him about the cricket bat. Khan readily agreed for the meeting, but the two sides could meet only on August 10. Khan’s PTI had already won the elections by then.

India’s diplomatic outreach to Pakistan’s government (then in waiting) by presenting a cricket bat autographed by the Indian team had attracted a lot of global attention as a novel diplomatic gesture.

According to sources, a large part of the discussion between Khan and Bisaria during the 30-minute meeting was also focussed around cricket. Other matters, including Kashmir and cross-border terrorism, were also raised.

The two other bats, sources said, are still with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

They are also likely to be presented to Pakistani dignitaries, but Indian officials are tight-lipped about whom they would present the souvenir.

Imagine if Sidhu would have come for the oathtaking ceremony of Nawaz. The latter would have been dubbed as “Modi ka yaar” and someone who sold Pakistan out to India.

Our people are so naive and gullible, it is hysterical.

PTI and Imran Khan are not going to go anywhere with this showbaazi. It is time to deliver now, but it will not be easy with a government that is essentially Musharraf part II.

Good on Sidhu for having the guts to attend the ceremony.

But I seriously worry about his security in future as there will be plemty of nutters out there who will want to cause him harm.

Since you are an authority on who is a genuine human being with dignity and sincerity, and you are also an authority on who was going to turn up for Nawaz’s oath-taking ceremony or not, what would your reaction have been if an Indian politician would have come for Nawaz oath-taking ceremony?

Would that have meant that (a) that said politician was not a genuine human being and lacks dignity and sincerity?

(b) would that have meant that Nawaz is “Modi ka yaar”?

Furthermore, the narrative in Pakistan is that if you are a Nawaz supporter, you cannot be a genuine human being with dignity and sincerity, because a person with these qualities cannot support a leader that has looted the country for decades.

However, Mr. Genuine, Dignified and Sincere Sidhu was a member of BJP for 10 years, and was a member of the party when Modi was elected as PM.

How can a genuine, dignified and sincere person support a right-wing extremist party? How can a genuine, dignified and sincere person support a leader that has the blood of over a thousand Muslims on his hand?

Why didn’t Mr. Genuine, Dignified, Sincere leave BJP as soon as they nominated the terrorist as PM?

Please don’t think that by calling me names, you will be able to deflect or avoid uncomfortable questions.

:)) very dignified indeed, you hit a 65 year old man on the head, who later died in the hospital. When supreme court overruled a decision on homicide, he faced the media proudly that he is now 7 ft tall with pride. Not a word of regret or remorse for what he did.

what a clown Imran Khan invited!

My bad. The PTI detergent powder is really strong. Maybe Modi should also have attended. Would have come back clean.

It's a shame Modi was never an international cricket player who rubbed shoulders with the great Khan, I have no doubt he may have been invited if that had been the case. This is why I have always been a proponent of Pakistanis playing in the IPL. Wouldn't the subcontinent be a better place if everyone were old colleagues and could hug each other on those big events?

Calling you name? I haven't, I have compare you to Reham Kham in this thread.

I think I have hit the nerve by comparing you to Reham Khan, this mean, it shows that you do dislike her.

I never claimed to have an authority to claimed who is genuine and dignify person, no one does, but everyone has an opinion. But it seem I have upset you so you came up with this ******** question, and believing I have an authority, I do not, I am just an ordinary citizen of Pakistan who want Pakistan to be better than what it is and from time to time on a internet forum I might call out someone who is pretending to be like Reham Khan to gain reaction and attention. Again, Authority and Opinion are two different word with different meaning.
, I thought it would be easier for you to differentiate but I guess when one is upset they make elementary mistakes.

Anyone from India visiting to promote peace between two countries is a genuine person in my book and that person goes back to India where he say "he would go back 1000 times if he is invited", shows that person is genuinely promoting peace.

Regarding NS, if NS and Modi were trying to promote peace, sure but fro that to happen NS had to win and Modi had to stop toeing the line of radicalized extremists hindu, neither has happened/ or happening.

You are one of those who would believe that IK supporters look at IK as a messiah, we do not. Their are two kind of NS supporters, first one are naive, and they support whoever they are told to, and other are conniving and chor who are only supporting because they want to protect their money, so, yes, later one aren't dignified and sincere human being.

Sidhu can be member of any party, but as long as he is promoting peace between two countries he has my support and will continue to have my support, you thought just because he was a member of BJP then I would have felt shame for calling him sincere and dignified human being? lol

Here is your issue, you want to look every issue in black and white and try to paint every issue related to Pakistan and every Pakistani with broader paint because it serve your reputation that you have created on PP, obviously for attention and reaction. I have always called out radicalized extremists Hindu, not every peace loving hindu. And if tomorrow, the same radicalized extremists Hindu say they want peace with Muslims and Pakistan and will stop the violence against them then I support them, just because they were extremists than it does not mean they have to be put to death or isolated.

every comment that you make regarding Pakistan and it's People and IK sound a lot like of Reham Khan's, criticizing something that has nothing to do with the original point ,argument or ordinary citizens of Pakistan, something you see Reham Khan doing on Twitter.

If a clown can help bring about peace between two countries then he has my support, which will prevent more killing of innocent and that makes him a sincere and dignified clown than Modi and NS.

Blame the Indian Judicial legal system then, what can Imran Khan or Pakistan do about this?
