Covid: AstraZeneca jab 100% effective at reducing severe coronavirus, US study finds

The DSMB found no increased risk of thrombosis among the 21,583 participants receiving at least one dose of the vaccine. The specific search for CVST found no cases in this trial.

Oh boy oh boy, the anti-vax crowd on here aren't going to like this! :)

Though, certainly there is a chance that bloodclots are a side effects, but that chance has been demonstrated to be very small. Let's not forget that the Norway cases are very few (less than 20 iirc) out of around 20 million who have had the AZ vaccine.

So usa is now approving AZ with a higher effective rate than both pfizer and there own one.

As i said days back this would happen, it was always the best vaccine, and only non-capitalist one made not for a profit

quite clearly those against were always the political or the stupid.

Perfectly put :))

Results from the long-awaited US trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine are out and confirm that the shot is both safe and highly effective.

More than 32,000 volunteers took part, mostly in America, but also in Chile and Peru.

The vaccine was 79% effective at stopping symptomatic Covid disease and 100% effective at preventing people from falling seriously ill.

And there were no safety issues regarding blood clots.

That should further reassure some EU countries that recently paused rollout of the vaccine amid concerns about a possible link.

Some are already starting to use it again now that Europe's medicines regulator has completed its review and has also concluded the vaccine is safe and effective.

Data from this new trial - run by experts at Columbia University and the University of Rochester in collaboration with AstraZeneca - may also prove useful in reassuring people about how well the vaccine works to protect the elderly against Covid-19 illness.

Several countries initially would not authorise the use of the vaccine in adults over 65, citing lack of evidence.

Around a fifth of the volunteers in this trial were over 65 and the vaccine - given as two doses, four weeks apart - provided as much protection to them as to younger age groups.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK are already receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine every day, so these numbers are tiny by comparison.

But the results are vital for the US and should clear the way for the vaccine to be approved by regulators there within the next month or two.

Lead investigator of the Oxford University trial of the vaccine, Prof Andrew Pollard said: "'These results are great news as they show the remarkable efficacy of the vaccine in a new population and are consistent with the results from Oxford-led trials.

AstraZeneca US trial results
79% effective at stopping Covid symptoms

100% effective in preventing serious illness

20%of volunteers in trial aged over 65

"We can expect strong impact against Covid-19 across all ages and for people of all different backgrounds from widespread use of the vaccine."

Prof Sarah Gilbert, co-designer of the vaccine, said: "In many different countries and across age groups, the vaccine is providing a high level of protection against Covid-19 and we hope this will lead to even more widespread use of the vaccine in the global attempts to bring the pandemic to an end."

Prof Gilbert said there were always cases of people falling ill after receiving a vaccine, particularly when very large numbers of were receiving a jab, but that did not mean that the vaccine was responsible for the problems. Meanwhile thousands of people a day were now dying across Europe from Covid-19.

She said: "It is really important that we get the chance to protect people as quickly as possible. This vaccine will save lives."

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-astrazeneca-usa/astrazeneca-to-publish-full-u-s-trial-results-after-rare-rebuke-over-outdated-data-idUSKBN2BF1RE

AstraZeneca will publish up-to-date results from its major U.S. COVID-19 vaccine trial within 48 hours after health officials publicly criticized the drugmaker for using “outdated information” to show how well the immunization worked.

The rare public rebuke marks the latest setback for the vaccine once hailed as a milestone in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic that has since been dogged by questions over its effectiveness and possible side effects.

AstraZeneca said results it published on Monday in which the vaccine had demonstrated 79% efficacy were based on an interim analysis of data through Feb. 17, and it would now “immediately engage” with the independent panel monitoring the trial to share its full analysis.

The British-based drugmaker on Tuesday said it had reviewed the preliminary assessment of its full, or primary, analysis and found it to be consistent with the interim report.

But the Washington Post reported that the data monitoring panel told federal officials they had been working with the company through March, had seen data that showed the vaccine might be 69% to 74% effective, and had “strongly recommended” AstraZeneca include that information in its public statement.

AstraZeneca shares fell 1.8% in London trading.

The U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said on Monday that the independent monitoring panel had expressed concern the company may have included outdated data that gave an incomplete view of the shot’s effectiveness.

NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci called the whole issue a really unfortunate unforced error.

“This kind of thing does ... nothing but really cast some doubt about the vaccines and may contribute to the hesitancy,” he told ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“The data really are quite good but when they put it into the press release it wasn’t completely accurate,” he said.

In addition to the 79% efficacy in stopping symptomatic illness in the trial conducted in the United States, Chile and Peru, the data reported on Monday also showed the shot was 100% effective against severe or critical forms of the disease and posed no increased risk of blood clots.

Dr. Larry Corey, co-leader of the U.S. Coronavirus Vaccine Prevention Network, which helped design AstraZeneca’s U.S. trial, said the monitoring panel’s rebuke was something he had not seen before. The virologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, praised the panel for speaking up, saying it showed the system of checks and balances worked.

One U.S.-based investigator who was not authorized to speak publicly said AstraZeneca was not wrong to publish an analysis it had described as interim and expressed concern over the public controversy. “It’s just a little bit like shooting yourself in the foot, because the science is good,” the person said.

The new questions about the shot’s efficacy coincide with its rollout in dozens of countries and clouds the timeline for its potential emergency use authorization in the United States.

“This is indeed an extraordinary act. The negative reports about this vaccine do not stop, although my assessment is that it is well tolerated and safe, but clearly less effective than the two mRNA vaccines,” said Peter Kremsner, from the University Hospital in Tuebingen, Germany.

Vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna that use messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to produce an immune response both had efficacy rates of about 95% in their pivotal clinical trials, far above the 50% benchmark set by global regulators.

AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 shot has faced questions since late last year when the drugmaker and Oxford University published data from an earlier trial with two different efficacy readings as a result of a dosing error.

Confidence in the vaccine took a further hit this month, when more than a dozen countries, mostly in Europe, temporarily suspended giving out the shot after reports linked it to a rare blood clotting disorder in a very small number of people.

The European Union’s drug regulator said last week the vaccine was clearly safe, but an opinion poll on Monday showed Europeans remained skeptical about its safety.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is seen as crucial in tackling the spread of COVID-19 across the globe because it is easier and cheaper to transport than rival shots.

It has been granted conditional marketing or emergency use authorization in more than 70 countries.

Many countries are relying heavily on the shot to end the pandemic, and several state leaders have taken it publicly to boost confidence.

Norway will delay a decision on whether to resume the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine until April 15, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) said on Friday.

Authorities on March 11 suspended the rollout of the vaccine after a small number of younger inoculated people were hospitalised for a combination of blood clots, bleeding and a low count of platelets, some of whom later died.

“We still need more information and more knowledge to reach a conclusion,” Sara Viksmoen Watle, senior physician at FHI, told Reuters.

“Now we have more of an explanation for why the patients got these symptoms ... But we still do not know if it is caused by the vaccine. And if it is caused by the vaccine, why?”

Norway is one of over a dozen European countries to have suspended the rollout of the vaccine, although most have since resumed its use on the advice of the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

The shot remains on hold in Denmark, however, while other Nordic countries are just using it for older age groups.

The EMA has said the shot’s benefits outweigh the possible risks. The World Health Organization has also backed it.

AstraZeneca has said a review of safety data from more than 17 million people inoculated in Britain and the European Union showed no evidence the vaccine raised the risk of blood clots.

Norway has reported five cases in which healthy recipients of the vaccine were admitted to hospital with a combination of blood clots, bleedings and low platelets, three of whom have died.

Local health authorities think the individuals developed antibodies in an immune response, which stimulated blood platelets that in turn created blood clots, and later, lowered platelet counts.

The question is what caused this.

“If it is the vaccine, which part? Is it the virus vector, the spike protein, a combination, or neither?,” asked Viksmoen Watle. “And if it is, are there certain groups in the population with an increased risk of such a disease?”

Authorities want to ensure a thorough process so Norwegians keep their trust in the vaccination programme.

During the pause, Norway will continue its own investigations, await a new evaluation by EMA, and search for any more patient cases at home or abroad.

Despite a recent rise in cases, Norway has had some of Europe’s lowest rates of infections in the pandemic.

That, coupled with the delays in AstraZeneca deliveries, means “the vaccine tempo is not really slowed down that much in the short-term by having this pause,” said Viksmoen Watle.

Researchers may have found an explanation for the rare but serious blood clots reported among some people who received AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine. They believe the phenomenon is similar to one that rarely occurs with a blood thinning drug called heparin, called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). In HIT, the drug triggers the immune system to produce antibodies that activate platelets, which cause blood to clot. Drugs other than heparin can cause clotting disorders that strongly resemble HIT, and researchers suspect that in rare cases, the AstraZeneca vaccine may be another such trigger. Four previously healthy individuals who got the AstraZeneca shot and developed life-threatening clots had the same kind of antibodies that activate platelets and initiate clotting in HIT, the researchers reported on Monday in a paper posted on Research Square ahead of peer review. Twenty individuals who received the vaccine but did not develop clots did not have these antibodies. An editorial comment posted with the study noted that drug-induced thrombocytopenia is treatable if identified promptly. Millions of people have received the vaccine without issues and European regulators and the World Health Organization say the benefits of the AstraZeneca shot outweigh its risks.

Germany suspends astrazenenca for under 60s

Canada suspends it for under 55s

Canada on Monday suspended the use of the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for people under 55 following concerns it might be linked to rare blood clots.

The pause was recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization for safety reasons. The Canadian provinces, which administer health in the country, announced the suspension on Monday.

“There is substantial uncertainty about the benefit of providing AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to adults under 55 given the potential risks,” said Dr Shelley Deeks, vice-chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

Deeks said the updated recommendations came amid new data from Europe that suggests the risk of blood clots is now potentially as high as one in 100,000, much higher than the one in one million risk believed before.

The bad headlines are not going away .

Europe’s medicines regulator reiterated its backing of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, saying no particular group of age, sex or a previous medical history was especially susceptible to blood clotting after receiving the shot.

However, while repeating that the vaccine’s benefits outweigh risks, it cautioned that people should be aware of the “remote possibility” of rare blood clots occurring, and must seek immediate medical attention in case of symptoms.

"A causal link with the vaccine is not proven, but is possible and further analysis is continuing," the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said in a statement. EMA issued the statement after a hearing with a panel of independent external experts on Monday.

It spoke after several countries including Canada, Germany, France and Spain limited use of the drugmaker’s shot, after reports of a rare clotting condition following vaccination.

Investigations by EMA and several national authorities in the EU continue, after initial probes deemed the vaccine safe for use following reports of a brain clotting ailment known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST).

A high proportion among the reported cases affected young and middle-aged women but that did not lead EMA to conclude this cohort was particularly at risk from AstraZeneca’s shot.

Women were generally more prone to CVST than men and twice as many women as men had received AstraZeneca’s shot in the EU so far, said EMA’s head of safety monitoring, Peter Arlett.

“This is why at this stage it is difficult to disentangle why there has been a preponderance of reports of this very rare potential side effect in younger women in particular,” he added.

EMA had analysed 62 such cases globally, consulting also with regulators in India, Brazil and Britain, and 44 of the cases had occurred in the European Economic Area (EEA).

It had looked into 14 deaths, though not all were associated with CVST, said Arlett. About 9.2 million people in the EEA had received the shot by the assessment’s cut-off date of March 22.

Arlett did acknowledge the blood-clotting incidence rate was higher than what was normally expected in the young and middle-aged. Though he did not quantify the difference, he said it did not justify a change in recommendation.

“If we look into individuals under 60, we do see more cases of (CVST) than we would expect to see from the background rate,” said Arlett.

Germany vaccine oversight body PEI said on Tuesday it had registered 31 cases of CVST, which resulted in nine deaths, out of some 2.7 million people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine.

EMA said a few of the German cases happened after its cut-off date and had not yet been included in its analysis.

The European Union has asked India to allow it to buy 10 million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine from Serum Institute of India, a government official told Reuters, the latest sign of growing pressure on Delhi to export more of its production to other countries. The EU wants the doses from Serum, the world’s largest vaccine maker, to offset supply shortfalls from AstraZeneca’s European plants and speed up the bloc’s vaccine roll-out.

Any quick approval of the EU request is unlikely, however, with India scrambling to expand its own domestic vaccination drive, said the Indian government official, who asked not to be named as the discussions are private.

Britain is also pressuring India to export the second half of 10 million doses it had ordered from Serum, the source said.

Serum was originally supposed to produce the AstraZeneca vaccine only for low and medium-income countries.

“The EU ambassador wrote a letter, saying, please give us (export) approvals,” said the source, adding the letter was sent around two weeks ago.

Serum, AstraZeneca and India’s foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for the EU Commission said the Commission had no immediate comment.

India, however, has said that it is now focused on expanding its own immunisation drive as COVID-19 cases have surged since March.

Its decision to focus on its domestic needs, which came after the government was criticised at home for shipping tens of millions of doses overseas, will also affect the WHO-backed global network for vaccine distribution, known as COVAX. The network aims to secure COVID-19 vaccines primarily for dozens of poorer nations.

Production glitches have slowed vaccinations for the 450 million people in the 27-nation EU. The bloc's per capita immunisation lags that of countries such as Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States, according to the website Our World in Data here.

India has so far exported 64 million vaccine doses to 83 countries, and administered the same number of doses at home. Its inoculation drive expanded from Thursday to include everyone above the age of 45, which is expected to raise vaccine demand substantially.

India has reported 12.22 million cases of the coronavirus, the third highest number globally after the United States and Brazil. It has recorded nearly 163,000 deaths from COVID-19.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-netherlands-astraz/netherlands-halts-use-of-astrazeneca-vaccine-for-people-under-60-idUSKBN2BP13Q

The Netherlands on Friday temporarily suspended use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for people under 60 following the death of a woman who had received a shot, the Health Ministry said.

About 10,000 scheduled appointments for vaccinations were to be scrapped as a result of the decision, news agency ANP reported.

The decision was made following new reports from medicine monitoring agency Lareb and discussions with health authorities, a Health Ministry statement said.

AstraZeneca said it was working with Dutch authorities to address any questions they had.

“Authorities in the UK, European Union, the World Health Organization have concluded that the benefits of using our vaccine to protect people from this deadly virus significantly outweigh the risks across all adult age groups,” it said.

Dutch agency Lareb, which tracks medication side effects, said earlier on Friday that it has received five reports of extensive thrombosis with low platelet counts after vaccinations with the AstraZeneca vaccine, including in a woman who died. Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

“These are women between 25 and 65 years old. Three patients had extensive pulmonary embolisms. One died and one also had a brain haemorrhage,” it said.

Roughly 400,000 people were vaccinated with AstraZeneca in the Netherlands in the period and the reports “seem comparable to other reports in Europe,” Lareb said.

It came a day after Germany halted use of the vaccine for people under 60 and a death was reported in the Netherlands of a woman between the ages of 25 and 65 who had received the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Netherlands has recorded about 1.2 million coronavirus cases in total and more than 16,500 deaths.

The pressure on Indian government to allow export os immense.

The only way out is for India to quickly approve the Johnson vaccine. It is being produced in India but cant be administered due to the fact that its not approved.

It has been approved by FDA and EMA and hence in the present situation should be authorised in India.

Seven people have died from blood clots after taking the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine in the UK.

The UK medicines regulator confirmed that of the 18.1 million people given the Oxford jab, 30 had gone on to have blood clots - and as of 24 March, seven of those had died.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there is currently no evidence to suggest a causal link between blood clots and the vaccine, and that the benefits continue to outweigh any risk.

Investigations are under way to determine if there is a link or if the cases are a coincidence.

The MHRA's chief executive, Dr June Raine, said: "The benefits of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in preventing COVID-19 infection and its complications continue to outweigh any risks and the public should continue to get their vaccine when invited to do so."

The MHRA said on Thursday there had been "22 reports of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) and 8 reports of other thrombosis events with low platelets".

The figures cover 9 December 2020 to 21 March this year, when 15.8 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine had been administered, and around 2.2 million second doses.

Concerns have been raised about blood clots after a tiny proportion of cases arose among the tens of millions who have received the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab.

Some countries, such as Germany, have restricted its use to certain ages but the European medicines watchdog and the World Health Organisation both say it's safe and effective.

The British Society for Haematology has issued new guidance for doctors, amid concerns cases of blood clotting could be linked to a condition known as thrombocytopenia.

It involves patients who have low numbers of platelet cells, needed for clotting, in their blood.

The guidance states: "An expert team of our peers have recently been involved in diagnosing and managing a rare syndrome of thrombosis associated with low platelets which have been reported in a few cases.

"At the moment, any causal association with coronavirus vaccination has not been established.

"However, if you identify patients with this syndrome in proximity to coronavirus vaccination, it is very important that you complete the online yellow card - this will trigger a request from MHRA for further details."

In March, the MHRA said that anyone who has had the vaccination and who then has a headache that lasts for more than four days afterwards, or bruising beyond the site of the vaccination after a few days, should seek medical attention.

But it also added that a headache is part of one of the most common side effects of the vaccine - flu-like symptoms, although these should normally disappear within a day or two.

To date, 31,301,267 people have had a first vaccine dose in the UK and 4,948,635 have had two doses.

That is a crazy high number, even if the risk of developing blood clots is small, 7 people dying out of 30 is a whopping 23.33%, that's almost 1/4th of the people that developed blood clots. This vaccine needs to be shelved, UK/Sweden need to defer to America and only use pfizer and moderna, they're playing with peoples lives.

30 out of 18mn is how much?

30 out of 18mn is how much?

If you tried reading, I'm talking about the number of people that died of blood clots of those that developed them. 7/30 is a large percentage. Of course you're going to be defensive about a made in india vaccine.

Earlier in this thread so many people throwing a hissy fit, claiming Europe is bad for suspending it.
Now that other countries have done the same, such as Canada, they are somehow quieter now

The EU is definitely trying the UK. The benefits of the virus far, far outweigh the negatives. They also now know how to treat people who may develop the blood clot side effect. This is basically the same as saying to someone not to leave their house because they may get hit by a car, murdered in the street, etc.

Even if AZ does cause blood clots, which I do not believe, these countries are killing far, far more of their citizens by NOT rolling out the vaccine.

I look forward to my second AZ jab. At that point I will feel confident again.

Again. Blood clots is a serious illness(Its cavernous sinus thrombosis) so the mortality is high. But if the number of cases is 30 in 18mn then the incidence of the disease is very low and may be equal to a random person developing it.

I don't need to be defensive. Right now the world is clamouring to get the made in India vaccine. EU has just requested for 10mn doses. Then there are 100s of millions of doses that Covax wants.

Then there are 100s of millions of doses that will go to other countries. Already 60mn plus doses have been exported.

Johnson vaccine, Novavqx vaccine, Moderna vaccine all are to be produced in India. Pfizer to had applied but after the govt made the rules that Pfizer had to follow clear they deferred the matter.

So almost every vaccine will be produced in India.

You really think a post on PP will change anyone's mind about the vaccine?

Some 40mn will go to Pakistan via Covax. May be pakistan should refuse to accept the vaccine aa per your advise.

30 blood clots out of 18 *million* jabs issued does not even qualify as a negligible statistic. I have already taken the AZ, my second one is at the end of June and it will be the AZ again. I say bring it on.

As for ‘playing with people’s lives”. The only countries doing that are in Europe/the EU. Even the WHO has now ripped on them for how slow their vaccine rollout has been. France has just gone into yet another national lockdown. Hospitalisation rates across Europe are rising again. And EU citizens en masse are getting sacrificed on the altar of political posturing about a vaccine with semi-British origins. Genuinely sad!

There is a link between AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and very rare blood clots in the brain but the possible causes are still unknown, a senior official for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said in an interview published on Tuesday. However, the EMA later said in a statement that its review of the vaccine was ongoing and it expected to announce its findings on Wednesday or Thursday. An AstraZeneca spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

“In my opinion, we can now say it, it is clear that there is an association (of the brain blood clots) with the vaccine. However, we still do not know what causes this reaction,” Marco Cavaleri, chair of the vaccine evaulation team at the EMA, told Italian daily Il Messagero.

Cavaleri provided no evidence to support his comment.

The EMA has repeatedly said the benefits of the AstraZeneca shot outweigh the risks as it investigates 44 reports of an extremely rare brain clotting ailment known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) out of 9.2 million people in the European Economic Area who have received the vaccine.

The World Health Organization has also backed the vaccine.

AstraZeneca has said previously its studies have found no higher risk of clots because of its vaccine.

Cavaleri said the EMA would say in its review that there is a link but was not likely to give an indication this week regarding the age of individuals to whom the AstraZeneca shot should be given.

Some countries, including France, Germany and the Netherlands, have suspending the use of the vaccine in younger people while the investigations continue.

In response to Cavaleri’s comments, the Amsterdam-based EMA said in a statement on Tuesday: “EMA’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) has not yet reached a conclusion and the review (of any possible link) is currently ongoing.”

The EMA said last week that its review had at present not identified any specific risk factors, such as age, gender or a previous medical history of clotting disorders, for these very rare events. A causal link with the vaccine is not proven, but is possible and further analysis is continuing, the agency said.

A high proportion among the reported cases affected young and middle-aged women but that did not lead EMA to conclude this cohort was particularly at risk from AstraZeneca’s shot.

Scientists are exploring several possibilities that might explain the extremely rare brain blood clots that occurred in individuals in the days and weeks after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.

European investigators have put forward one theory that the vaccine triggers an unusual antibody in some rare cases; others are trying to understand whether the cases are linked with birth control pills.

But many scientists say there is no definitive evidence and it is not clear whether or why AstraZeneca’s vaccine would cause an issue not shared by other vaccines that target a similar part of the coronavirus.

In a separate interview, Armando Genazzani, a member of the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), told La Stampa daily that it was “plausible” that the blood clots were correlated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is based on a modified chimpanzee adenovirus vector, ChAdOx1, developed at Oxford University, and is one of several adenovirus-vector COVID-19 vaccines. The current vaccine rollout represents the first use of viral vector vaccines on such a global scale.

BBC News - Covid: Child vaccine trial paused over possible clot link

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56656356

A trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID vaccine on children in the UK has been paused while the medicines regulator investigates a possible link between the jab and rare blood clots in adults.

A University of Oxford spokesperson stressed that there were "no safety concerns" with this specific study, but that further information was being awaited from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

"Whilst there are no safety concerns in the paediatric clinical trial, we await additional information from the MHRA on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopaenia that have been reported in adults, before giving any further vaccinations in the trial," the statement said.

"Parents and children should continue to attend all scheduled visits and can contact the trial sites if they have any questions."

A deliberately misleading post - the trial has not been paused because clots develop in children nor is there a link to clots developing in children.

They are paused because of a possible link to clots developing in adults.

It is important to research the materials that are employed in the production of Covid-19 vaccines, which - we ought to bear in mind only have emergency approval, because they are still in experimental stage, and that process is scheduled for completion in 2023.

The following may be of interest:

'during its development, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine uses kidney cell lines from a fetus aborted in 1973. The modified cells are used to help the vaccine replicate (a ‘vaccine factory’) and are then removed before the vaccine is completed. Please note that the fetus was not aborted for the purpose of research

3. None of the mRNA vaccines use fetal cell lines in their production, although they were used in testing of the Pfizer vaccine (I am unsure about Moderna)'

This is an issue with ethics i feel really uncomfortable of an aborted fetus which is a baby human life being used like this .

Unlike you I can read - which makes the irony of your response that much more daft. Let me help you out - but I can find a more simple version which uses smaller words if you like:

“ Confirming that the trial on children was being paused, Prof Pollard said: "Whilst there are no safety concerns in the paediatric clinical trial, we await additional information from the MHRA on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopaenia that have been reported in adults, before giving any further vaccinations in the trial”

The trial is paused because of a possible link to clots in adults - not children as implied in your post where you ‘conveniently’ left adults out of your second line.

Yes, it is unsettling - to say the least.

Whether the foetus was aborted for research purposes or not, it is being used in research.

Whether the genetically modified foetal cells are employed in the testing stages of the vaccine or not - they are being used for testing purposes.

So whether or not the vaccines actually contain foetal cells is irrelevant, they were used in their development.

Jadz is back!

I have missed you.

30 blood clots out of 18 *million* jabs issued does not even qualify as a negligible statistic. I have already taken the AZ, my second one is at the end of June and it will be the AZ again. I say bring it on.

How did you get on with the AZ James - feel ok, no fluey symptoms?

How did you get on with the AZ James - feel ok, no fluey symptoms?

Robert I know you're asking James but I also had the AZ jab and had absolutely no side affects whatsoever. My wife had the AZ jab two days later and had a little ache in the arm and felt drained of energy with a little muscle ache. This lasted less then 24 hours.

Robert IMMY69 —

Fluey symptoms for 2.5 days after my first shot of the AZ vaccine. Muscle aches, general fatigue and aching legs seemed to be the worst side effects at the time. But I have been absolutely fine ever since. :)

My nephew who is 21 had the Astrazeneca 2 weeks back, now today it's been deemed not safe for under 30's and they will be offered a alternative, I mean this is really worrying.

There is a risk with every form of medication - don’t believe me, go open a box of paracetamol and read the leaflet and go check out the side effects. This is no different.

The % chance of developing these side effects are drastically smaller than the chance of developing complications from Covid - Europe has politicised this to the detriment of their citizens sadly.

Glass houses and stones.
There is a four in one million chance of a blood clot developing after being jabbed with AZ. A conclusive link has yet to be established.
Where were you when almost 100% of the jabs went off without a hitch? Not here.
A negative story comes out and you are straight back in this thread.
Bad faith would be an understatement.

We are also nowhere near knowing the long term effects.

A few weeks ago people were claiming these instances mean nothing, the UK says its safe etc etc. Now even the UK have decided to stop this vaccine to under 30's. What about those who are over 30, are they at any risk going forward.

You have to a lunatic to take this vaccine if you know you're healthy & strong, your immune system will easily take care of Covid.

UK has suspened it to under 30's , there is sufficiant reason to worry this vaccine can cause serious damage.

You've taken it , so will not go against it.

Its far easier to recover from Covid than it is from a blood clot to the brain. People want to take this risk, it's their choice but to tell others they are over worrying is wrong, their body, their choice as to which risk they want to take.

Behold - Brit-Pak intellect in all its glory.

1) The % incidence to develop clotting symptoms is higher, far higher, if one develops Covid than if they take a vaccine

2) AZ has not been suspended for under 30’s - under 30’s are now given a choice of Vaccines which includes AZ and are the only age bracket to be offered the chance

3) Given the clotting, all allabit rare side effect, that means you would not take any medicine that has thrombocytopenia as a possible side effect?

Lets look at in another way.

2.5 Million have died as a result of Covid 19 worldwide.

2.5M out of 7B worldwide population.

More die from war, famine, flu, and alcohol each year - way more - the same period.

Yes RSS intellect is the way to go.,

1. Covid doesnt kill 98% of people. A blood clot in the brain has far greater % of death.

2. Oxford has been suspended, a choice of another is given not both. Try reading, it will help you.

3. I dont take any medicine and its' not up to some bloke living In Bombay to tell anyone what they should or should not take.

But alcohol is not banned, it's promoted daily on TV, magazines and radio. With Covid you can stay away from people but you could be driving in your own car when a drunk driver takes your life.

I’m surprised the mods let you get away with such an anti-Indian bias. No idea why you direct it to me as I’m not Indian - born or otherwise.

I know numbers are not your strong point, but the %risk and incidence rates of clotting is far higher with Covid 19 than with the vaccine - and it’s not even close.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56665517 - seems fairly clear, but then I have no trouble with words that contain more than 4 characters, so I’m not anticipating you will be able to understand the contents of the link but perhaps a grown up can help you there.

And you failed to answer the question - your stance on medicine has been defined a few times on this forum (still waiting on you to reveal your secret to bullet proof immunity) - you would never take such medicine?

Your anti Brit Pak bais doesnt exist.

It doesnt matter what the risks, some people dont take any medicine like myself, yet we are being presssured to take Covid 19 vaccine, understand this basic simple point.

lol. Yes they are being offered alternative as Oxford vaccine is suspended, its not a choice of Oxford and others.

I dont need to discuss my medical history to someone on the internet. Unless Covid mutates into something serious which can kill healthy people, I dont need it.

With Covid, I am somewhat sympathetic to your stance. I get it - some people prefer the natural route. The problem with Covid is it’s possible to harm others even if you are not - an army of potential Typhoid Mary’s if you will. And that’s where the pressure is coming from for vaccination - to cull transmission and direct incidence.

The side effect I mentioned above is what you will find with a drug taken by most people globally - paracetamol. There is nothing exceptional about this vaccines side effects that are not prevalent in most other drugs - otc and prescribed. So this ‘but it can cause clots omg it’s a outrage’ is boll**** - this is normal.

I dont take any pills inc paracetamol, so for me the only risk is taking the vaccine.

Protecting others isnt my problem, they should do what it takes to protect themselves. I wont take even 0.01% of risk to my health in order to possibly protect others.

That’s an incredibly myopic view - you could cause serious harm to your family/loved ones - how does that sit with you? Knowing you could be the reason someone you care for gets seriously unwell, potentially losing their life out of a self’ preserving stance?

For your sake - the way the wind is blowing - I see vaccination passports becoming more widespread beyond international travel - that could see you excluded from most areas of activity.

The AZ will still be given to under 30s in the UK if other jabs aren’t available at the vaccine sites at that time, or if they had AZ the first time around. It’s not strictly suspended.

I backed the AZ strongly before even being invited for a vaccine / taking it, the historic posts are there for everyone to read.

The statistical chance of getting a blood clot when someone is ill with Covid (as high as 11%) is much higher than the chance of someone getting a blood clot from taking a vaccine against Covid (four in one million)....

I know my family, I know if they are vunerable and will act accordingly.

You do know Vaccines dont stop tramission? Arguably after having the vaccine you may be more of a risk as you will think everyone is safe around you.

The Vaccine Passport is an infrigment on human rights and freedom imo. However its over stated, people will continue to do what they wish without a vaccine as most places will take a negative test or proof of immunity having covid previously. You need to do some basic research.

Do you have any evidence for this?

Even so, Im confident I can survive covid, so need to take any further risks.

‘Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed, chairman of the Commission on Human Medicines, said the risks had to be weighed against the consequences of Covid-19, which also causes clotting.

He said 7.8% of coronavirus patients suffer blood clots on the lungs, while 11.2% will suffer deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs.

People who have had their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine should still get their second dose, the MHRA said. Only those who suffered one of these rare blood clots after the first dose should not get vaccinated, it added.’

I know far more than you do on this - there is an abundance of research in how the vaccines do cut transmission rates. So your assertion is flat out false.

Companies are already reviewing their working insurance policies on ‘no vaccine no ability to attend in person’ and this will continue to gather momentum.

What I suspect will prevail is the right to go about ones business and not fear for death versus the right to not be vaccinated but be a risk to society - and that battle will be won by the former. As vaccination rates continue to rise, the ‘no vax’ brigade will continue to become marginalised and yes - excluded from the bulk of societal venues/areas.

What Mr Munir failed to say is these could occur in over 60's or those with underlying health issues, family history etc etc. Yet blood clots from the Vaccine can hit anyone. In Norway 3 very healthy health offiicals with no history saw blood clots arise, one dead, not sure if the other 2 have survivied.

A large percentage of people in Europe and US are not having the vaccine, the governments are using pressure, blackmail and giving half truth info so they change their mind. Its clear as day, surely you and others can see this.

You've shown you know little so far.

You cannot be fired at work for not taking the vaccine, not in the UK. Where are you from?

Up to 200,000 NHS staff are refusing to take the vaccine, they are still working.

As I said you can show negative test or immunity to attend gatherings or pubs/bars etc. Please continue to ignore this point.

Bad faith would be an understatement.

Obviously the risk of side effects is low, very low.

However I am talking about how the whole thing unfolded with British pro-vaccine campers vehemently denying that there was any risk at all from AZ. The situation now is that the UK health authorities have admitted that there is some chance of side effects, and are recommending under 30s to get alternatives if possible. That is a climbdown from the mid-March situation.

And European nations were not over reacting then they suspended it. If I may remind the first countries to ban it were not anti-UK France and Germany, rather it was Norway and Denmark both of which are agnostic in the EU/UK posturing sphere.

You really are a simpleton aren’t you. Who said fired? I said review - you clearly have no grasp or exposure of the upper echelons in the corporate world beyond a Google search so leave the insights to the grown ups.

You are precious - you don’t like the vaccine because it doesn’t guarantee that it stops transmission (here is a starter for 10 as I doubt you have access to paid journals - https://www.healthline.com/health-n...lp-stop-virus-transmission-heres-what-we-know) but are fine with ‘at venue’ tests despite the fact they can give false negatives - especially the LFT’s.

Your stance is wavering from principles to whatever is convenient for you - it’s clear you have no substance to base any assertion on other than your point of view - which is fine, but peddling it off as ‘wisdom’ is farcical - and we can all see right through your facade.

You really are slow. What is your background and location?

There are laws in the UK which protect people from discrimination and this includes employment discrimination. I gave you the NHS example which also means they will continue to employ people without a vaccine.

I never said I'll take the tests but was pointing out its an option for those who are not vaccinated to attend gatherings or enter premises, a child could understand this simple point.

lol Why are you getting worked up if another person doesnt want to inject anyting in their body? I have my views which are im sharing, you can take my vaccine too if that cheers you up.

UK government is full of liars. Patrick Vallance has £5 million worth of shares in GSK. Hancock has given contracts to his mates. Boris is just a buffoon but they all work for the interests of big crops, those who fund them. The citizens here are mostly idiots who think they are living in a democracy when in reality its a controlled state for the benefit of the rich. They dont care about people.

Give it another 24 months you will more problems with this emergency vaccines.

Some people think they have some sort of right to tell or pressure others to take a vaccine lol.

If they refuse, they then start to slit their own wrists over it. Strange times we live in.

Shares - yes. Specifically in AZ? No as pharma isn’t the best yield.

How the goalposts shift with KKWC - it’s quite amusing. But linguistic Kung fu is his raison d’etre. From my perspective, this virus has claimed many lives - whether it is more than, say, famine etc is irrelevant - and that’s tragic.

For my part, I’ll do what I can to help ensure what I do does not endanger others - I do find it odd how others are fast and loose with their stance - but that is their right and choice.

But if the cells of an electively aborted foetus (the reason may be due to congenital anomalies, failure of contraception, rape, maternal risk etc) can save the lives of millions of people in the form of a vaccine, isn’t that a good thing?? It’s not like we are killing someone to make a vaccine.

We will never know what circumstances and pressures led to the mother of the foetus to have an abortion - the scenarios you enumerated are all possible, God knows best.

Using aborted foetal cells in the testing or production of vaccines raise immense ethical questions. The absolute desire and need to save millions of lives are beautiful and noble human responses to the pain and suffering caused by diseases.

However, saving human lives by employing human material, elements or remains dehumanizes humanity, and reduces it to the physical plane, devoid of emotions, intelligence, senses. Because, when all is said and done, the aborted foetus had the potential to become a human being, was not just a composition of cells, elements and minerals.

I don't know - greater minds than mine have grappled with these matters, and tried to find the right balance between respecting the dignity of aborted foetuses and the need to find cures for serious ailments.

I refused the vaccine. Hoping it does not become mandatory for all.

EU drug regulator: Unusual blood clot is 'very rare AstraZeneca side effect'

The EU's medicines regulator says unusual blood clots should be listed as a very rare side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine for Covid-19.

After a study looking at 86 European cases, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) concluded the benefits of the vaccine outweighed the risk.

The report reflected data on 25 million Europeans administered with the jab.

The EMA could not list specific risk factors such as age or gender, but most blood clot cases were women under 60.

Separately, the UK's vaccine advisory body said that under-30s there were to be offered an alternative jab to AstraZeneca due to the blood clots issue. Some 79 people had suffered rare blood clots after vaccination by the end of March in the UK - 19 of whom had died.

And the World Health Organization's advisory vaccine safety panel said on Wednesday that although a blood clot link was "plausible" it was "not confirmed" and the cases were "very rare" among 200 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca globally.

More than 132 million Covid-19 infections have been recorded across the world, along with more than 2.8 million deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University research.

Even though i view it differently, i respect your opinion.

Glad that you are back.:)

So UK has accepted that there i sa risk for younger people
Where are those who were angry at the Europeans for supposedly making a fake claim about risks?

They were wrong, and so is our own government.

If there is any elevated risk of blood clots from taking AZ, which there isn’t I have a 1/250,000 chance of getting one. For young people it is 1/100,000. Still statistically insignificant.

Whereas I have bad odds of dying of COVID or being crippled by it if I don’t take it.

It’s a no-brainer.
