HELP! Need laptop recommendation

Please recommend a Windows based laptop.

My budget is ideally under US$550-600 but max I can go to is $700

My requirements:
- Heavy use of Microsoft Excel, PPT, Word etc
- Use of mathematical programs such as STATA
- Web browsing (tend to have many tabs open)
- Youtube, movies, music etc

So not such a heavy load. However what I would want is that the laptop to be good for atleast 3 years so specs shouldnt be too outdated to the point where it becomes ancient by next year only.

Buy one with A quad core i3, i5 or i7 processor + 8 GB Ram
 
A computer's processing speed depends on CPU cycle. I3, I5 or I7 all of them are good. Quad core would mean you have 4 such CPUs. Tasks get divided between CPUs or CPUs share sub tasks.

And bigger ram means more task can stay in active memory. So you can choose any one with such configuration

My cousins work at Microsoft and they gifted me a Surface laptop and I absolutely love it, see if you can stretch your budget for it.

Try the Surface Go which is a hybrid between a tablet and a laptop and you can get it for 500 CAD which is about 380 USD. It should meet all the requirements you mentioned in the OP.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3315 bought around 4 years ago. Still runs smooth. Processor is fine although you might face battery problems later on but overall a decent package.

i took my brothers dell inspiron m531r-5535 (3 yrs old)

it runs fine but then suddenly restarts for no good reason every other day.

also.. then the wifi just stops working..

so random problems like these so need to replace

No such random problems in mine except the battery one.
Runs quite smooth for a four year old gadget.

I got Acer Aspire 5 for $600 last year. It is i7 gen 8. Only drawback is it is a HDD, they only had 256gb in SSD for this price.

These or others with similar specs should be fine. Try and stick with 8th Gen processors (i5-8xxx or i7-8xxx rather than i5-7xxx or i7-7xxx) and get something with a SSD. 8GB RAM should be fine. IPS screen preferable, for your eyes' sake.

Bhai those are top notch specs for someone who needs high performance. Sloggy bhai only needs decent processor speeds for every day use.

SSD makes life easier. IPS helps your eyes. 8th Gen processors = Better and longer lasting.

Of course he can probably make do with a i3-7100U, 4GB RAM, TN panel and 1TB mechanical HDD but why settle for that when you might regret it down the line.... Get the best bang for your buck, I say. Of course, it depends on one's location. If you're in the US, these are pretty standard specs for a mid-range laptop but if you're buying in Pakistan, you will have to settle for inferior products.

The low clock speed shouldn't be an issue unless the laptop has really poor cooling which would cause it to throttle, the turbo boost is plentiful. Plus, it's a quad-core and the benchmarks are pretty solid. Performance is not too dissimilar to the 7300HQ which had a much higher base-clock.

Yeah i3 has dual cores only but i5 has 4

im tempted to go for that.

will make a trip to best buy tomm and see if they have this or similar ones at discounts. They have some back-to-school kind of sales

If you are using this for university or something, definitely go for the $750 one. It is very sleek and lightweight, will be very easy to carry around and use at uni.

Iam a power user and very very discerning. So far the best laptop i have seen out there is Thinkpad T470P

i7 7th Gen 7820HQ
32MB/465GB SSD (NVME PCIE M.2 512 GB SSD )
Great Keyboard with backlit keys. Has one Key that can be customized to open any program.
HD Screen with touch (No Tablet Mode)
Cost = Dont know. Might be above $700
Not super light but not heavy at all.


Other Options: Dell Inspiron 13 i7359-8408SLV
i7 6500
16GB/465GB SSD
HD Screen with touch + Tablet mode.
Keyboard - not so good as the thinkpad but has backlight keys.
Cost = $699 ( 2yrs ago )
Super Light

My suggestion is if you want the laptop to last add $200 to your budget.

Don't think much over HDD and ssd.

You can always change them later on without any difficulty.

Josh was actually right. Any laptop with i3 upwards and 8 GB ram would more than enough for your need.

I have lenovo ideapad 110 15isk. i3 processor with 8gb ram. Trust me when I say this, I even played far cry 4 with this.

Fps sucked but the price is around 400 dollars so I won't complaint.

It didn't come with windows (I intentionally check for laptops so that the price doesn't include windows licenses) which lowered it costs further.

I use Ubuntu and deepin so didn't have to pay for those license.

I3 processor with windows is simply too slow to do any work. I would highly recommend getting i7 or i5 latest gen at the very least. I3 imo is not for work related items, more for casual usage.
 
Acer aspire s13 -
thin & light / good battery life decent performance.

Acer aspire e15-
heavy but best value for money product & jack of all trades device. If possible pick it's ssd version.
 
get either a dell xps 13 older model or lenovo x1 older model you can easily get around $700, anything beside get a mac OTHERWISE every other Pc machine is utter poop

This is a very misleading information.

Most laptop will come with i5 or i7 with boosting 2 TB HDD which is utter rubbish. here you are paying for an i7 processor but ditching SDD means the i7 will never ever give the performance as one expected because the HDD would be throttling the I/O. It will never perform better than an i3 in this scenario because the bottleneck isn't the processor but the HDD itself which is running at 7200 rpm!

It's like putting michael schumacher in a car with 800CC engine. How one expect to drive this car faster even if the driver is schumacher?

And none of the manufacturer will give you all the components at i7 specification because the price will sky rocket. In the end, they will advertise it as i&7 processor but in the end, it will do nothing in terms of performance because you aren't giving the ideal environment.

That's why while benchmarking a processor, every setup takes the ideal component so that synchronisation could be made. But the OEM manufacturers will never ever do that as it will be too high price even for elite ones.

In a consumer market scenario, there will be hardly any noticeable difference between an i7 laptop and i3 laptop unless the i7 runs on a SSD and i3 runs on HDD.

You do realize HDD can be replaced by an SDD much easier than upgrading from i3 to i5. If i3 with SDD costs $400 than thats not much less than the price for an i5 which is around 500.

Windows 10 runs a lot of processes in the background, I don't know if i3 with dual core can handle it if you are running other programs like excel and have multiple chrome tabs open.

Storage was just one aspect. RAM, pipelines will be another factors which will determine the bottlenecks.

And windows simply sucks in RAM management. That's why modified versions of windows 10 are around which are stripped off those unnecessary services that hogs the RAM. These lite versions are much more capable of handling the RAM efficiently than the MSDN one.

Concerning legality, I am not sure about those as those are modified though the license could be applicable on those also perhaps.

But I don't use windows. Linux is far better than windows than any aspect. It's just that windows has institutionalized the people and hence they find it hard to adapt to a new environment.

Have you used Macbook? If yes, then which one is the best? I am asking for the purpose of App Development and using Sketch.

i believe you are talking about 330.

Be careful about lenovo laptops. They have different config based on the same series. The last part of the model number is important. Atleast in india, there are multiple Lenovo 320 or 330 are around. You need to be specific about which one.
 
I'm currently in the same boat and I'm looking to spend no more than $600. My usage will be very similar to Slog's as I'll be going in as a student. If possible, I wouldn't mind if the laptop could play a few games on the lower settings but that's not an absolute necessity. For me the most important aspect if a laptop within my budget which can give me good performance for at least for school (4 years). For now, I'm looking at a few options and want to close in on one.

The first four have been recommended on the thread.

1. HP Laptop Pavilion 15-cc610ds $580
It's a 8th gen i5 with 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of SSD storage. It has an Intel UHD Graphics 620.

The 920MX is a very weak dedicated graphics card, its performance is highly unlikely to be much better than the UHD 620. If you plan to do some moderate gaming, you can probably find a laptop with a Nvidia MX150 or GTX 1050 within your budget.

Go for either HP spectre Pro 13 G1 or Dell Xps 13. They are a little high spec but when u are buying a laptop better spend an extra $200-300 and get something worthwhile.

The MX150 is a reasonable upgrade over integrated graphics but the 1050 is far superior. It's generally better to spend a tiny bit more if you're getting a big upgrade so that you don't regret it later. The Nitro 5 is a good option for the price, something comparable is the MSI GL62M like this one.

And better to get PC or apple pro? If same SSD speed is met in PC, same price of pc laptop has more specs than mac book pro. But longevity wise mac book is better?

To be fair, AMD's Ryzen processors have provided some competition in the market and have arguably been one of the reasons behind the major increase in performance for the 8th gen Intel processors in comparison to the 7th gen ones.

AMD still has a relatively small market share but they are competitive now. Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo etc. are using Ryzen processors for some of their laptops.
 
Go for Lenovo thinkpad E580 8th generation (i5-8250U or i7-8550U). Way more than enough power for your needs plus the reliability of being a carefree daily driver.

I got the GTX 1050 the other day and I like it for now. I haven't really played any graphic intensive game yet as I am somewhat new to gaming itself. Last time I played video games was about 4 years ago on my PS2 so once I get paid next week, I'll probably buy a game and see how the laptop really performs.
 
Do not go for a powerful GPU in laptop unless you do gaming, video or 3d rendering regularly.

I had a chance to pick between 960m and 1050Ti (With 6700HQ quad core) and I went for 960m. Even then its a hot mess for simple apps like Photoshop, Chrome (you will be forced to turn it off for these apps then). Yes it helps alot with games but it depends on whether you play or plan to play the heavy titles or few casual games are fine for you (they are for me apart from work stuff).

The reason I suggested you Lenovo ThinkPad E580 because it consists of very light GPU of AMD (Rx580) which wont put much heat with causal apps while 8550U i7 performs way better than previous gen underpowered U processors. You can also check XPS 15 if you can waste a bit of money but I like lenovos keyboard and ease of use lot more.

if you travel with it, then buy the lightest one you can afford.

I'm not sure about the Graphics Card requirements for Adobe Premiere Pro but the Adobe website says 4GB VRAM which this 1050Ti has, so the laptop is definitely good enough. A Google search shows it works fine with the 1050Ti as well. The CPU is the best mainstream laptop one on the market right now so that's no issue.

If you're looking for something cheaper, you can check for something with a slightly weaker CPU. The 8750 is a six-core CPU, but something like a i5-8300H (quad-core) will do just fine. This laptop also has a 144Hz display which is useful for fast-action games, more than anything else. If you aren't playing those type of games, you don't really need that.

Came across this in a quick search but I don't know much about UK outlets and prices. You can probably find more deals on other websites.

You see I’m in a tricky position - I won’t spend excessive hours doing tons of videos edits. It’s literally occasionally but I just don’t want a laptop which will lag. So If there is a laptop out there which will do just that but for cheaper price than I’d much prefer purchasing that.

My only concern is that the laptop I have suggested and the one you suggested may be limited as it is only 8gb, so I may find myself upgrading the memory in the future.

I get your point, I do video editing every now and then and occasional gaming; it's frustrating if you spend a decent amount of money and don't get a device which will handle what you throw at it.

Good point regarding the RAM, since Adobe's website recommends 16GB, though it'll work with 8GB.

Upgrading RAM is generally a quick procedure and doesn't cost a whole lot but if you can find something with 16GB, it'd be useful to avoid that process.

I do a bit of video-editing and had 8GB (now 12GB) and never had any issues. However, I don't use Adobe Premiere.
 
I study computer science and I think the best laptop based on your requirements is the 2019 13” matebook.

It had a 8th gen i5 cpu
8GB Ran
2k IPS screen and resolution.
Beautiful build second best to apples macbook.

Currently £799’om amazon it’s a steal.

the one you gave a link above, is a fine computer. Value for money is there indeed.

I'll make a few quick suggestions. If you are editing video, then make it to 16 GB RAM. In india, you can ask the dealers to change the RAM for paying extra. Not sure of UK though. But the motherboard should have expandable slot for additional RAM.

The next thing I'll do is, get rid off windows 10 home edition. I prefer taking controls in my hand so generally prefer enterprise edition (it is the best one hands down!) but it isn't available in retail stores so you should go for Windows10 pro edition. There are also "modified" windows 10 OS out there who are much quicker than the original version with boost in performance however, the legality issue will be there.

Except those two, this laptop is more than enough to suit your needs. You have studied your requirements well i must say. And this one is value for money.

when someone mentions.... "second best to apples mcbook...." i have no words.... For the apple fans, mcbook is probably next big invention since bread and butter but there's also a big world outside of that.

Yeah I’ve done my research with care. Just needed to consult with you and co. I’ve been advised to invest in a desktop. Of course they are offer far more specs for the same price BUT I like my tech to be mobile.

Can you also take a look at the “Argos link” that [MENTION=133760]Abdullah719[/MENTION] recommended, and pro cons of that in comparison to my link?

Also if you and [MENTION=133760]Abdullah719[/MENTION] and others can advise of any desktops that offer powerful specs for the same price? £800-900, heck at this rate I may even be better of customising my own PC! :))

I would prefer i5 8th gen, 8gb ram, min 512 ssd

I don't think you will get good 2 in 1 at that price point. especially combination with ssd.

Hp pavilion x360
Lenovo yoga 520 are good budget range 2 in 1's options.
If you are interested in normal laptop then I would recommend to wait for asus vivobook x403 . It has exact same specs as you listed above and offers full day battery life.
